This document outlines a research study that will investigate the effectiveness of feedback as an assessment tool for teachers and students. It proposes two hypotheses: 1) that teachers will find feedback more effective than tests for assessing students, and 2) that students will find feedback helpful for improving their learning. The study will collect data through student diaries, teacher feedback, teacher interviews, and student questionnaires to analyze whether feedback is an effective assessment method. It also hypothesizes that technology can help teachers provide feedback more efficiently. The results of the small-scale study conducted in Northern Finland are expected to be significant within that region. Broader research on the topic would produce more widely applicable results.
2. . Assessment is part of our life
. We assess and are assessed all the time
. Assessment in schools (teacher and
student)
. Assessment teacher-student perspective
. Feedback
3. Can feedback be used as an effective
assessment tool for teachers and students?
I expect that the teacher will consider feedback more
effective than tests for assessing the pupils (H1) and on
their hand, pupils will consider feedback efficient for
developing their learning (H2).
How can technology facilitate teacher’s work in
giving feedback?
I expect that the use of technology will save time and
efforts from the teacher, giving her opportunity to
effectively think over the feedback given to the pupils (H3).

Pupil’s diaries
Teacher’s feedbacks
Teacher’s pre and post interview
Pupil’s pre and post
questionnaire
Observation
From pupil’s diaries I will see if
they have considered they
improved their learning.
From teacher’s feedback I will
see if the teacher consider they
have improved their learning.
I will also check if there is
correlation between teacher’s
and student’s view of the given
feedbacks.
From teacher’s interview I will
see if she could assess pupils
based on the feedback given.
From pupil’s questionnaires I will
see their idea of feedback and
the importance of tests and if
there was a change on it after
receiving constant formative
feedback.
By observing I would be able to
reflect and compare on student’s
diaries and what has happened in
the classroom

Teacher’s post interview
From the interview with the
teacher I will be able to see if the
technological tool helped her
save time and efforts in giving
feedback.
It was suggested by Jari the use
of Edmodo but I have not
decided about it yet.

8. The topic is of general interest and
application in school contexts
the data collection is going to be in Northern
Finland, in a very small population; the result
will be therefore nationally and regionally
significant
Broader research is necessary in order to have
more significant results
