Thinking slides. We start on the coast and work our way inland. The kids have to say where the area is in terms of the environmental gradient which they have already seen. This is differential erosion in Lewisian gneiss. The dyke is much softer than the older rock and has been eroded.
The Atlantic beach backed by the sand dunes. Seaweed is still gathered as a fertilizer in this area.
A layer of cobbles have been eroded out and provide very efficient ammunition for the erosion of the coastline.
So much so thaty sea defenses have had to be constructed in places.
A wee reminder of the other part time occupation of many crofters.
The distinctive tilth of the machair. Only strips are ploughed at one time. Why?

The settlement is usually further inland (off the good land!) in the blacklands.
Occasionally the machair is mixed with peat. Fortuitous for the farmer.
The peatlands on the slopes of the hills have often been eroded.
