China China emerged from the Second World War with some serious issues. First, it had suffered through the war. Remember, the Japanese invaded China in 1937. Secondly, it had already been fighting a Civil War for many years. From 1912 until the Japanese invaded in 1937, China had been suffering with a good deal of internal strife. Once the Emperor had been deposed, China had been trying to create a cohesive state. However, due to the ravages of Colonialism and poor governmental policies for about 100 years, instead of segueing into a western style democracy such as Japan (Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s dream), there was a corrupt crony capitalism with a somewhat democratic leadership, that had to deal with extreme poverty, and regional warlords. While trying to make order out of this chaos, this government was then presented with a growing Communist party threat. Under the leadership of Mao Zedong, the Chinese Communists were a new breed. Mocked by the Russians because even Stalin believed that you couldn’t have a communist revolution in such a poor, peasant, non-industrial society, Mao was undeterred and began a decades-long campaign to “win the hearts and minds of the people” – mostly the peasants. This was the beginning of what we now call 4th generation warfare (guerrilla warfare, small bands attacking targets, terrorism). Mao befriended villages, won their hearts, attacked the Chinese Nationalists and then disappeared into the villages. This “war” went on for about 10 years until the Japanese invaded – in fact, it was one reason that the Japanese were able to attack China so successfully. During the Second World War, the Communists and the Nationalists made an uneasy truce called the United Front. The idea was to team up to defeat the Japanese and then figure out the government. Mao greatly benefited from this truce. He managed to get the Nationalists to stop attacking him, and to concentrate on the Japanese. Meanwhile, he spent very little effort at attacking the Japanese but continued building up his strength and winning over new converts. Thus by 1945, when the Japanese were defeated, Mao was in a very strong position from a large majority of popular support. History and Geography China is one of the oldest civilizations on earth. The land area is roughly equivalent to the U.S, but there are about 1.4 billion residents. It is bordered on the north with Mongolia and Russia (the Soviet Union during almost all of the Twentieth Century), on the west with India, Nepal and Myanmar (Burma), on the south-west with Vietnam, Laos, on the south with the China Sea and the Philippines and Taiwan in the China Sea, on the Northeast with Korea, on the east with the East China Sea and Yellow Sea with Japan in the Yellow Sea (across from Korea). Economically, China was the engine that drove world growth at least until the 17th century. Many historians believe that the strength of the Chinese economy lasted until the second industrial revolution in England. The ...

This slideshow contains a large amount of information and it is best to download it and to read it on a full screen, at leisure. Churchill said many times that WW2 was an ‘unnecessary war’. He was thinking only of the Europe and not the WW2 in the Pacific. Hegemony, imperialism and nationalism had a lot of to do with it, but historian can never be satisfied with these labels. Unlike the sociologists, military strategists, the economists and psychologists, historians cannot be satisfied with generalisations. These are not specific enough for the historians. Historians like to dig into their subject in details and look into the specifics, motives and the events. Because their explanation is in such detail level, inevitably there are many shades of opinions and different views. Then they debate amongst themselves and hopeful come to some kind of conclusion as to what actually happened. But this is too complicated for politicains. They like simple explanation. Politicians pick and choose facts and events to build their case according to their political colours. This is what is happening to the history of the Second World War. It is been revised, distorted and even denied. In authoritarian society, books are banned, views are censored and people are kept ignorance of the events. In a more open nations, this could lead to denial of holocausts and atrocities. Myths and invention can always manufactured to justify their ideology. As J H Plumb said in ‘The Death of the Past’, the role of the historian was to “dissolve those simple structural generalisations by which our forefathers interpreted the purpose of life in historical terms” and to challenge the use of the past as an instrument of political or social repression. In the words of British historian Eric Hobsbawn “We (historian) have a responsibility to historical facts in general, and for criticizing the politico-ideological abuse of history in particular.” No nation is greater or smaller because of their past, it is what they are doing today that matters. Contents Introduction I. Every sectarian approach and every sectarian thought are a vicious mistake and an intolerable act. II. Political situations and international relations do not define the nature of regimes, governments, and states. III. When it comes to world affairs, there is no such thing as a chessboard with "black" and "white" squares. IV. All mass media report the same lies, changing only the «chess sets». V. The dignity of the Iranians and the Palestinians is a most controversial subject. VI. Believing promises given by enemies disguised as friends may be lethal. VII. Military and farmers against the royals and the ayatollahs VIII. There is no difference between Iran and Egypt when it comes to servility toward major colonial schemes.
