2. Early life
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13th, 1743 in Shadwell Virginia. His Parents
where Peter and Jane Jefferson. When Thomas was eight he attended a local
school run by a Scottish Minister. He studied latin, greek, and french. He also
learned how to ride a horse. At age 16 he entered a college and started to study
law.
3. Marriage
Jefferson married a 23 year old Widow named Martha wayles skelton. There
wedding was held on January 1st, 1772. The Jeffersons had 6 kids, but only 2
survived adulthood. In 1782, after Martha's last child she died from diabetes and
ill health. Martha told Thomas never to remarry.
4. Political Career
Jefferson was elected to be the first Secretary of State of the United States in 1790. “He
successfully balanced the country’s relatively weak geopolitical position and his fear of
expansive federal powers with his desire for U.S. territorial and commercial expansion. In
1793, the conflict between Thomas Jefferson, who supported vigorously a centralized national
bank, and Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton, who favored the power of central
government, forced Jefferson to resign
5. Democratic-Republic Party
Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison created the Democratic-Republican party in 1791. The party
opposed the Federalists ideas that is run by Alex Hamilton. From 1801 to 1825 the new party controlled
the presidency and Congress as well as most states during the first party system. The Democratic-
Republican party split into the Jacksonian Democracy, which later turned into a democratic party in
1828. The National Republican Party got succeeded by the Whig Party.
6. Presidential Campaign
In 1800, Thomas Jefferson Decided to run for President. Jefferson had
Impressive political credentials. Like drafting the Declaration of Independence,
served under two continental congress, and a Secretary of State. The Politician
that ran against him was John Adams who was a federalist. The Federalist won
New England while the Democratic-Republic won the South. Jefferson won 73
Electoral Votes, while Adams won 64 electoral votes.
7. Presidency
Thomas Jefferson was sworn into office on March 4th, 1801. One of the
accomplishments he made while he was president was the Louisiana Purchase.
Which was over 820,000 square miles, bought from France for 15 Million Dollars.
Jefferson ran for Re-Election in 1804, he was facing against Federalist Charles
Pinckney. Thomas Jefferson won that champaign. His electoral vote was 162,
and Pinckney was 14 electoral vote.
8. Final Months
In the Final Months of Jefferson's life he was over $100,00 in debt. He was
Worried that he would have only a little to give to his heirs. In February 1826, he
applied for a fundraiser by the General Assembly. In July 1826, his health
deteriorated due to rheumatism from wrist injuries, and Intestinal and urinary
disorders. On July 3rd 1826, he got invited to Washington to attend the
Anniversary of the Declaration. He declined the invite because of his fever.
9. Death
During the last hours of his life, he was surrounded by his family, and friends. On
july 4th, 1826 Thomas Jefferson past away at 12:50 pm. He was 83 years old,
and he past away on the 50th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Hours later John Adams past away, and his last words where “ Thomas
Jefferson Survives”.
