2. REARCH
ANALYSIS AND
IDEA
DEVELOPEMENT
Here I talk about what research ive done and how it has
helped me so far in my idea for my own factual project. Then I
move on to my idea analysis where I talk about some idea
concepts I have had and some positive and negatives of
them.
2 P R E S E N T A T I O N T I T L E 2 0 X X
3. ANALYSING RESEARCH
During my research, I looked at different types of documentaries,
the conventions of those documentaries and some examples. I
also had a brief look at what you could find about the
sustainability of York college across all media.
By looking at the different genres of documentaries, it gave me
an idea on what conventions I wanted to follow and then how to
categorise it into a genre. Some techniques that I do want to
follow are: hand held shots, little to no voice over, evidentiary
editing etc. I also learned what I didn’t want to include in my own
documentary like: filmmaker involvement, the interview questions
being included in the edit, the “right” answer being shown etc. I
had a look at the six different types which helped me understand
how to categorise the conventions into a genre. The six I briefly
looked at was: Poetic, Expository, Observational, Participatory,
Reflexive and Performative. When looking at them, I learned what
makes them all fall into their categories and I looked at some
examples.

4. RESEARCH ANALYSIS
I felt like I would benefit if I did some research on some
of my concept ideas to see if my ideas would have
enough information to create a short documentary with.
At this point in my idea development, I had a brief
concept of doing it about what we do in college about
the sustainability and the environment. I wanted to see
what I could find online about the subject and did some
analysis on how much students were aware of it. After
the analysis, it has helped me understand that it is a
concept worth exploring. The college are in the very
early stages of making a difference, and students are
very unaware of what we do have in place, so I think
that it would be interesting to have a look at the topic.

5. IDEA GENERATION
MIND MAP
To start off my idea generation, I have
made a mind map on 4 main subjects that
all have sub-genres to them. Each subject
is something I have an interest in and can
talk about which would make good factors
to create for my factual project. Some
areas are easier to do than other as I know
more about some things better than others.
However, in the criteria of tis project, I
need to be able to interview two people
who are considered “experts”. So when
narrowing down my project idea, I have to
also keep in mind who I am going to
interview.
5 P R E S E N T A T I O N T I T L E 2 0 X X
7. IDEA GENERATION BREAKDOWN
Film is my interest and what I'm studying so I am someone
learning about the subject and industry. I thought I could do a
factual piece on a specific subject within film. Some specifics
subjects was creators in the industry like Greta Gerwig,
Tarantino, steven Spielberg. Also subjects like the Hollywood
gender pay gap between actors where I could mention Scarlett
Johansson, I could talk about a specific film and how it was
made lie the avatar series or something like the toxicity within
Hollywood. There is also this media and social media side of
the industry that I could do a project on. Things like cancel
culture, advertisement of a film so I could talk about how the
film Don’t Worry Darling (2021) was promoted in every wrong
way. I could talk about the controversy of paparazzi and
magazine media to get the most out of a celebrity.
7 P R E S E N T A T I O N T I T L E 2 0 X X
8. IDEA GENERATION BREAKDOWN
I thought a good starting point would be my hobbies and what I
enjoy to do in my spare time. The topics would be on
something I know a lot about and look at a lot anyway.
With formula 1, I started to think about what aspect I find
interesting within the topic and things that have a lot of
coverage on it. It would be something that keeps me motivated
to any extra research. The downside I don’t have many people
I could interview. I have people that are fans of the sport and
people who have watched it for year but no one considered an
expert. The interpretation of a storyline would all be based on
an outside point of view which can be unreliable.
With live music, I would create a factual piece and interview
people who have some knowledge as I would tell it from a fan
perspective. I feel limited to actually create something
entertaining for this subject and I would need to film at a few
different venues to create filler footage which is something that
may be difficult.
8 P R E S E N T A T I O N T I T L E 2 0 X X
9. IDEA GENERATION BREAKDOWN
Doing a documentary piece on book would be very difficult. I
have a real interest in certain author which I have a lot to say,
but turning it into a documentary piece is a hard thing to do. I
wouldn’t have those authors to interview so I would only be
able to tell it as a fan which could be unreliable. However if I
chose to work on colleen hover or booktok, then I have people
I can interview. I would tell the colleen hover as perspective of
how the media covers her. I have people to interview that are
fans, people that don’t enjoy her work, and people that pay
attention on why she is problematic.
9 P R E S E N T A T I O N T I T L E 2 0 X X
Politic rights is something that can be quite controversial.
It is a very opinionated subject and people have a lot to
say about different topics. The benefit of it is that I can tell
it from a certain perspective and don’t necessarily have to
talk to experts on the subject.
10. IDEA GENERATION BREAKDOWN
One of the first things I thought of when the
project was presented was to do it on a
specific person. Now I wanted to originally do
it on a celebrity I'm a fan of as I would know a
lot about them. However after starting my idea
generation I realised that doing on people that
I thought had a big impact on society in either
positive or negative way could have more of
an aim and point to the project. I would create
a biography type of piece and use my voice
the tell the story. I looked at some
controversial people of recent years to to
possible create a project on one of them to
show the negative influence that have caused.
And then I also put some positive influence
celebrities that have some praise for what
they have done for their chosen industry.
The untold stores would be based on people I know personally so I could
talk and interview them directly. I wrote one about aruba which is a place
I'm going to visit so I could interview people that I am going with or
people that live there. I don’t have a specific story line for that yet. I also
did one based of the fact that I am a twin and I also know other twins so
I could use that to my advantage to do a project a factual piece.
1 0 P R E S E N T A T I O N T I T L E 2 0 X X
11. IDEA GENERATION BREAKDOWN
Lastly I did some ideas on some genres of
different types of documentaries. The problem I
found with this is that I don’t personally watch any
documentaries within any specific genre unless
its advertised well. However I did make notes on
possibly doing a sport documentary where I could
talk about a specific sport. The problem I have
with all of these genres is I don’t have anyone to
interview about any of these subject. With things
like global warming I can speak to people that
have their own opinion on the subject matter, but
I would have to do a voice over for all facts and
outside sources.

12. POTENTIONAL APPROACHES
EXPOSITORY
DOCUMENTARY
A potentional approach is to do it
as an investigarity documentary
and expose what we don’t do it
as a college.
FACTUAL
DOCUMENTARY
I could do it as a factual
documentary where I educated
people on what we do and our
future.
PARTICIPATORY
DOCUMENTARY
I can get involved and control
the narrative myself.
1 2 P R E S E N T A T I O N T I T L E 2 0 X X
Depending on what approach I take, will alter the
story my documentary I tell. My main aim for the
documentary is to educate York College students on
what we are doing for the sustainability of the college.
If I tell it myself and do it as a participatory
documentary it would be a documentary on me
exploring what we do which that means all research
and planning needs to be filmed as part of the project.
It would have to be shown as a journey. Now If I did
an expository documentary, I would want to get other
pupils involved which I would need slightly different
equipment, more production time and a story line that
I have planned out. It would also need a final outcome
point. This is why I think I will likely create a factual
educational documentary. Doing this allows me to
learn from the interviews and use their voice as
voicers for and filler clips. I feel more confident in
planning this in the time I have available than the
other potential approaches.
13. POTENTIONAL TECHNIQUICS
MULTIPLE CAMERA
ANGLES
Doing multiple camera angles allows me to
have more footage to cut to and change
angles. A negative for doing this is I would
need more equipment and more editing time. I
would also need two mics that I have to make
sure sync
MUSIC
Adding music behind it can create a certain
atmosphere for the documentary. I want to
use it to add some background noise and
so that I have a rhythm to edit my clips to.
MY VOICE OVER
This depends on what I want my narrative
to be. If I use my voice over I can explain
what is happening and my point of view of
the situation clearly.
INTERVIEW QUESTION
INCLUDED
This can either add formalness or in
formalness… it shows the seriousness of a
question and the reaction of the
interviewee.

15. FINAL IDEA
My idea that I am going to make my project on hasn’t been mentioned throughout my idea
development process. My intention was first to create a documentary project based around
the film industry so that I could talk about my studies, interview people who have made it
into the industry, people who haven’t, aspiring film makers and document some of my Aruba
trip and how its going to help me get where I need to be. However, while I am away and
have started to plan for my project, I have spoken with one of the teachers I am here with
and have decided to create a project I could use to help educate students of York college on
the what we do to keep York college as sustainable as possible. I think the reason I mainly
want to do this idea is because its on a topic I personally care about, and It something that
the students don’t know about. I now have the familiarity with a teacher I can interview, and
her opinions on the topic that I agree with. She is one of the leaders of the sustainability
society that have a lot of future plans for the college that I want to discuss in the interview. I
feel like I have the skills to use equipment in college classroom as I have camera
experience. Overall I'm excited on what I get to create and think that I have a interesting
subject matter.

17. EPISODE 1 –
SUSTAINABILITY WITHIN
YORK COLLEGE
Summary of intended production:
I am going to make a 2-4 minutes short documentary to show what sustainability measurements we have in place
at York college. I want it to cover what we have done in the past, what we are doing now and what we want to do
in the future. I would like it to cover a bit on the students knowledge of the sustainability, so that I can use my
project to raise awareness on what can be done.
The short documentary will have two interviews, one from an Art and Design teacher at York college named
Charlie Barnes, and the second being Mike Saunders who is the Head Of Quality Of Education at York College. I
aim to document these interviews in a York college classroom, preferably in a Art or Textiles classroom as they
have a sustainability movement in their curriculum.
In terms of equipment, I want to use one college camera with a mic and tripod to conduct these interviews. I
would like to use the camera to also film any college grounds that Charlie or mike may talk about in the interview.
I plan to edit all footage taken within college time on a college computer and use premiere pro. Due to out of
college activities, my time to complete the project is shorter than I would like so I aim to have this project filmed
and edited within 2 weeks.

19. FACILITIES
COLLEGE COMPUTERS
I will need to use college
computers to edit my project and
write my production diary. I have
access to the computers for 7
hours a day, 3 days a week which
gives me plenty of time to edit. I
also have my personal laptop if I
come across any issues.
PREMIERE PRO
I will need to use premiere pro to
edit my project. The software I
have gained familiarity with over
the years and any new skills that I
may need, I can do some research
on it and talk about it in my
reflection. In premiere pro, I will
edit the two interviews, the filler
footage, add text and music. If I am
unable to use it within college, I
have the software on my personal
computer. I need to make sure I
upload everything to my York
college one drive.
COLLEGE
CLASSROOM
I will need to use a college
classroom for the interview to
take place in. I plan on doing it
on a lunchtime where the facility
will be empty.

So all filler shots will be shot within college. I
will try and shoot places that they talk about
within the interview. I know I want to shoot
recycling bins, the outside of college, the
inside of college entrance and the college
fields and plants. All shots will be shot during
mid day and used the natural light that is
used within college. If any areas are
particularly dark, I will rent a led light from
the department. Each shot with either be

25. AUDIO PLANNING
I don’t plan on doing any voice over which includes me
narrating the project. However, depending on how the
much information the interviewees talk about, it is
something that I would consider ding if it helps explain
anything. I would do that doing my editing process so I
will leave time in case I have to do that. I do have the
option to add text instead if I run out of time.
I will be using audio equipment for the project. This is
for both interviews and it is with equipment I have used
before and I know how to use so I feel confident in my
ability to use it.
In the editing stage of my project I will add some copy
free background music . I haven’t decide on a genre as
I don’t know where the topic of conversation will lead
which would effect the music.

26. LOCATION INFORMATION
YORK COLLEGE ART
CLASSROOM
For the interviews I will be filming
in the art or textiles classroom.
This is because in this department
they have some sustainability
displays that I can use as a
backdrop for the project, as well as
the sustainability meetings are held
in this area of college. I will try use
a classroom with natural light
otherwise I have to think about
getting an LED light rented from
the film department.
YORK COLLEGE
CAMPUS
For any filler footage I want to be
able to get some footage of how
York college looks so that any
people who don’t attend and are
viewing the product, know what the
campus looks like. I know I want a
clip of the different floors of the
college so people get a general
idea.
COLLEGE GREENERY
I would also want some footage
of any college greenery campus,
so the outdoor fields, and plants
or veg that college are growing.
This would be shown when the
interviewees mention it so their
voices can be a voiceover for
what I am showing.

Mic difficulties I am familiar with the mic equipment which mean I
know how unpredictable they can be. I will upload
footage to premiere pro while testing the mic so I know
everything is working. In case the mic equipment is not
working fully, I have my phone mic that I can sync with
the camera.
Filming outside during winter (rain, cold weather,

I have scheduled a date to do this so I have organised
to bring raincoats, umbrellas and boots to wear. The
equipment with have protective gear around them as
well so no damage.
Headaches and sore eyes from screen time This would be during the editing part of production. I
need to remember to have regular breaks and drink
water.
