P ERCEPTION <ul><li>A process by which individuals organize and interpret their sensory impressions in order to give meaning to their environment. </li></ul><ul><li>It is a process by which you become aware of objects, events and especially people through your senses ( sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing). </li></ul>
  4. 4. I NTERPERSONAL P ERCEPTION “ It is a continuous series of process that blend into one another.” For convenience of discussion we can separate them into 5 STAGES .
  5. 5. STIMULATION <ul><li>Your sense organs are stimulated . </li></ul><ul><li>e.g . </li></ul><ul><li>1. You hear a new CD, </li></ul><ul><li>2. See a friend, </li></ul><ul><li>3. Smell someone’s perfume </li></ul><ul><li>4. Taste an orange, </li></ul><ul><li>5. Feel another’s sweaty palm. </li></ul>STAGE 1
  6. 6. <ul><li>SELECTIVE PERCEPTION </li></ul><ul><li>Naturally, we don’t perceive everything; rather, we engage in </li></ul><ul><li>Selective Perception </li></ul><ul><li> </li></ul><ul><li>It includes: </li></ul><ul><li>1. Selective attention & </li></ul><ul><li>2. Selective exposure. </li></ul>
  7. 7. SELECTIVE ATTENTION You attend to those things that you anticipate will full fill your needs or will prove enjoyable. SELECTIVE EXPOSURE Expose yourself to people or message that will confirm your existing beliefs, that will contribute to your objectives, or that will prove satisfying in some way.
  8. 8. ORGANIZATION <ul><li>We organize the information which our senses pick up. </li></ul><ul><li>We organize our perception in three interesting ways: </li></ul><ul><li>1. Organize by RULES. </li></ul><ul><li>2. Organize by SCHEMATA. </li></ul><ul><li>3. Organize by SCRIPTS. </li></ul>STAGE 2

Organize By Rules <ul><li> a) Rule of Proximity or physical closeness </li></ul><ul><li>Things that are physically close together constitute a unit. </li></ul><ul><li>b) Rule of Similarity </li></ul><ul><li>Things that are physically similar, that look alike. </li></ul><ul><li>c) Rule of contrast </li></ul><ul><li>Things that are physically different from each other and </li></ul><ul><li>It is the opposite of similarity. </li></ul>

Organize By SCHEMATA <ul><li>Schemata is the plural of Schema. </li></ul><ul><li>Schemata is a mental templates or structures. </li></ul><ul><li>S chemata help you organize your perceptions by allowing you to classify millions of people into a manageable number of categories or classes. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Organize By SCRIPTS <ul><li>A Script is an organized body of information about some action, events, or procedure. </li></ul><ul><li>It’s a general idea of how some events should play out or unfold. </li></ul>
  12. 12. STAGE 3 <ul><li>INTERPRETATION-EVALUATION </li></ul><ul><ul><li>By this stage you are perceiving the things peoples or actions by evaluating the schema or the interpretation of scripts. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>It influence by your experiences needs, wants, values and beliefs. </li></ul>
  13. 13. MEMORY <ul><li>O ur perception and their interpretations-evaluations are store in our memory so that we may ultimately retrieve that sometime later. </li></ul>STAGE 4
  14. 14. RECALL You may want to recall or access the information you have stored in memory. Recalling is a reconstruct method. STAGE 5
