• The definition of immigration is the action
of coming to live permanently in a foreign
country.
3. Why did Immigrants start to come
to America?
• They wanted to come here to start a better
life for themselves and to get away from
their home countries.
• They just wanted a new beginning.
5. Mexico
• There were about 11.4 million foreign born Mexicans
residing in the U.S. as of 2008.
• The Mexican born population in the U.S. was larger than
the total population of two-thirds of UN member states.
• About 1 of every 10 Mexicans resides in the United
States.
• There were 3.4 million Mexican born lawful permanent
residents in 2008.
6. Italy
• Poverty, overpopulation, and natural disaster have all
increased the amount of Italian immigration.
• Southern Italians suffered from exploitation by people of
the same nationality and religion.
• The immigration was a way of coping with poverty and
displacement.
• Italian immigrants established hundreds of mutual aid
societies, based on kinship, and place of birth.
• Their migration could not be seen as rejection from Italy.
