1. How to: Recover from a Facelift
The Langsdon Clinic
Once you have had your procedure, it helps to understand the recovery process and have some
information that can aid your healing. This will help you in recognizing what is normal and when is it
important to call our office during your recovery.
Facelift Recovery
The most important step of facelift recovery is to follow your surgeons’ orders very closely,
before and after surgery.
After your procedure, a bandage may be placed around your face to minimize swelling and
bruising.
You will receive careful instructions on how to care for your surgical site and instructions
regarding medications that aid healing and reduce the risk of infection. Our staff will also
guide you with specific instructions. Be gentle with your hair, hairline and face as they are all
tender.
During the first 4-5 days post-surgery, you can expect to have the most swelling, bruising
and tenderness which are normal. Patients typically do not feel pain but more of a ‘tight’
sensation.
On average, facelift patients will begin to experience less swelling and discomfort in 5-7
days.
By two weeks’ time, most facelift patients are ready to return to work. Most physical
noticeable improvements and healing will also appear during this time.
Abstain from heavy lifting and/or active exercise for at least 1 month after your procedure.
If you are planning to attend a formal/high profile event, it is best to give yourself 4-6 weeks
to heal before the event.
If you happen to experience intense pain inform your surgeon as soon as possible.
Understand that discomfort should be consistent while undergoing the healing process but
should not be abrupt and unusual. Swelling is normal as well, however new type of swelling
which randomly appears days or even weeks later can be a “cause for concern”.
Immediately report to Dr. Langsdon any questions or concerns to avoid pain or any long
term complications.
2. Questions to ask your plastic surgeon:
What medications will I be prescribed after surgery?
Will I have bandages after surgery and when will they be removed?
Will my stitches be removed and when?
When can I wear makeup?
When can I resume normal day to day activities?
When can I resume high active exercise?
