They gave a wonderful packet about writing, planning and performing a murder mystery at a library! It was very creative and exciting. This is definitely on my to do list so if anyone else is excited about this… let me know!

Role of public library: Partnershipes with non-profits already working with Latino populationsInteresting: If you ask someone if their language is spanish or english they will pick one or the other, but sometimes their language may be first an indigenous language (apparently common issue in Raleigh/durham area (people had problems reading the survey because they only speak spanish, they read their indigenous language) – Health Resource Book Mark in Spanish? (Give out at Latino Fest?) – Medline has a bilingual bookmark
LSTA Collaborative and Innovative Project Grant (Forsyth County Libraries), San Fransisco Pub hired social worker, winston hired peer support specialist (certification offered to those who have suffered homelessness/mental health issues/drug abuse issues and came out the other side strong to help others). They created partnerships with nonprofits and have found permanent housing for at least one person and temp housing for others… Teaching Lifeskills (GED Prep with Learning Express, Personal Budget, Ways to Save $, Tips for surviving homelessness, medical programs (stress relief), men’s rap group, computer basics for seniors. Sensitivity training for staff (community read – homelessness)
Awesome, but we don’t have permission right now from county. Coming soon per Rachel!
Displays – Using things for what they are intended for, Uniformity across branches (this is a specific NHC look), Before & after shots – really can tell improvement, across the board assessment each quarter (instead of managers emailing/calling/yelling the loudest – there can be some overview of what is “most important” and possibly save money by doing bulk orders at one time… (instead of NE saying “I need carts” and something ordering 3 carts, they can assess for this at one time at all branches and managers can do updates as needed between site visits).
So much information packed into this session!!! Most interesting: comicmaster.org.uk could be used in creating a graphic novel club, storybird.com is really cool, educational app program for families (ask ppl to bring in own devices), children’s writing group has gone over really well in Charlotte, abcya.com has typing games and computer terminology…. Digital Learning Day & Everyone on 3.21 everyoneon.org – bridging the digital divide
NE and new hanover county is so far ahead of this game… basically a train the trainer type of model with multiple levels of training based on interest, patience, customer service skills, & natural ability to use technology
