This document outlines a research study that aims to investigate the effects of using audio and video approaches on students' listening comprehension abilities. Specifically, it seeks to determine if documentary videos with or without English subtitles can help improve listening skills of Diploma students at UiTM. It also examines how the dialect of speakers affects understanding via audio. The study will use a quantitative correlational design and instruments like questionnaires, pre-tests and post-tests to compare students' understanding levels when exposed to different variables like video and audio. The sample will be semester 1 Diploma students taking an ELC120 course at UiTM, excluding repeaters.

Analyzing Students' Listening Comprehension

“ Analyzing students understanding in
listening comprehension using audio and
video approaches”
2. Introduction
Nowadays instructional technology has been used widely in
education as materials in teaching. Lots of technologies have
been used as teaching materials such as computer, radio, TV to
make learning session more effective and interesting. Teachers
take this opportunity to use audio-visual material to teach
listening in class in order to make the learning session more
active. (Hayati & Firooz, 2011).
Research Probelm
According to (Marta Szczepaniak, 2013), listening has many
problems that are still uncovered or vague. This is because many
peole including researchers are paying less attention to this
language skills. Due to this, many instructors or teachers are not
exposed on the suitbale tools that can be use in class
3. Research Objectives
To investigate the effects of using documentary video with
English subtitle to help Diploma students in UiTM to improve
their listening comprehension.
To identify students understanding in listening comprehension
via audio to different type of the speakers’ dialect.
To investigate the effects of using documentary video without
English subtitle to help Diploma students in UiTM to improve
their listening comprehension
4. Research Questions
Do documentary video with English subtitle can help Diploma
students in UiTM to improve their listening skill
comprehension?
Do the dialect of the speakers will affect on the students
understanding in listening comprehension via audio?
Do documentary video without English subtitle can help
Diploma students in UiTM to improve their listening skill
comprehension?
5. Research Design
Quantitative approach
Correlational Research (Explanatory Design)
- Use this design to seek to relate two or more variables to see if
they influence each other.
Eg: Students understanding level in listening comprehension
using two different variables (video and audio)
