  • Good afternoon everyone, my Name is Adam Lewis and these are my partners Adam Timler, and Blake Adam. Now not only do we make up a team of 3 Adams but we are also the founders of Techtonik Nightclub, Canada’s first ever sustainable dance club. Now you may ask yourself what exactly is a sustainable nightclub? Or maybe why do we need sustainable nightclubs? Well traditionally nightclubs are a place to meet new people, share good times with friends and just let loose after a hard-days work. An innocent form of entertainment more-or-less... But unfortunately traditional nightclubs are extremely unsustainable by nature.
  • Based on current research the average nightclub, when compared to a normal 4 person household, uses 30 times the amount of water, 150 times the amount of energy and produces 40 times the amount of waste... it is important to add here that these numbers are derived from nightclubs that are usually only open 2-3 nights per week, or on average 130 nights a year. One club will emit 450,000 kg of Co2 each year which is equivalent to approximately 24,000 trees per club.
  • So in lies the idea behind the sustainable dance club. The sustainable dance club was an idea born out of rotterdam, the founders vision was to prove that it is possible to have fun, and be environmentally responsible at the same time. In conjunction with a dutch innovation firm they created the first ever sustainable dance floor or the SDF for short.
  • The SDF is made up of completely portable mechatronic modules that capture the kinetic energy created as people dance atop of the tile. The modules measure 75 cm by 75 cms and are 20 cms in height. On average one module produces approximately 30 watts of energyThese modules are all connected simultaneously to a main control panelthat stores the electricity that is generated and redistributes this to other energy consuming components of the nightclub. One controller can be connected to a maximum of 40 modules, which can generate up to 1400W of electricity.
  • Since it’s inception in Rotterdam SDF technology has been implemented in several other markets around the globe including: RussiaAustraliaBrazilMiamiAnd most close to home, San Francisco
  • Sustainability is not exclusive to the SDF technology though they also implement:Water wall CircuitUses rain water to cool the club and flush the toiletsMinimal Waste barRuns without water and uses 50% less electricityBelt ClipAllows you to carry your glass and re-use it throughout the nightTrees for danceCalculates your carbon footprint and allows you to buy a tree on behalf of this
  • Now our goal is to bring this sustainable technology to Vancouver. Our mission statement is as follows:Techtonik Nightclub is committed to changing the world one dance move at a time. By providing a sustainable alternative to traditional nightclubs, while ensuring excellent customer service within a positive and safe atmosphere, we aim to provide a unique, and innovative clubbing experience.
  • And how does Techtonik compare to the average Vancouver nightclub? We estimate that we will be able to reduce water consumption by 50%, energy consumption by 30% and waste produced by another 50%. Putting us at the absolute fore-front of sustainability and cost saving in this industry.
  • So why are we the right team to bring this technology to a sustainably friendly Canadian market? Our diverse background and business experience speaks for itself.
  • I will personally bring a technical and creative side to Techtonik Nightclub. My background in software development and international marketing will allow me to express my skills in the configuration of brand awareness. I have also built several small, but successful, startup internet ventures and will be in charge of developing a strong website and web-based marketing scheme. I understand the importance of web-based technologies in our society and will apply all my knowledge on this topic towards this venture. My experience working abroad, in the Czech Republic, and my understanding of European business practices gives me an upperhandin dealing and communicating with the SDC, and their business team in the Netherlands. My knowledge in business sustainability and my creative attitude will also allow me to help design optimal innovative features to differentiate Techtonik from other nightclubs around the world. But enough about myself.
  • Blake Adam is an experienced management supervisor with deep connections in the Vancouver nightlife scene. Every industry insider that we spoke with emphasized the importance of who you know for marketing purposes and creating hype.. They informed us that social networks are crucial to success in the nightclub industry.  Now growing up in Vancouver and actively involving himself in community athletic programs has provided Blake with the knowledge needed to penetrate this market. He has friends currently employed in Vancouver nightclubs who have asked to join our team if the chance arises, as well as friends who work for BluePrint promoting agency, a large promotion firm in Vancouver. Blake also has experience in overseeing and managing operations.  He has spent six months as a kitchen supervisor, two years as a Department Manager in a Vancouver grocery store and three years managing the operations of a local cell phone firm.
