• On a scale of 1-10, how busy would you say you
are?
• When you’re rushing from your room to class, or
from class to a meeting, or a meeting to the
dining hall, how often do you stop to look at a
flyer on the wall?
And, most importantly…
What makes you think any of
your peers are any less busy?
Let’s face it. Flyers don’t work.
So Let’s Try Something New.
Let’s try something…
A little more labor-intensive.
A little more thoughtful.
And a LOT more effective.
Part IV: Fortune Favors the Bold
#31: Announcements in Class
We alluded to this back in Part I, but if your professors permit
announcements be made before or after class, speak up and use your

#32: Coordinated Changes
Have a promotional image for your event? Have your exec board and
members change their profile pictures on social media to that image.
Change your computer/tablet/phone backgrounds to it. Offer the chance

#33: Homemade T-Shirts
SGA may require you to pay half for printed T-shirts, but find a white T
and some T-shirt markers, and wear your upcoming event information on
your sleeve (or your chest, or your back). People will look if you make it

#34: Costumes
Create a costume and walk around campus in it (not in classes, please!) to
show off your event and provide a little entertainment as you approach your
peers. They’ll get a giggle out of it, and trust me- they’ll have a harder time

#35: The Elevator Pitch
Yep, you’re allowed to talk in an elevator. So avert your eyes from the
ground and talk to the people riding with you. If you’re particularly bold,
consider staying on the elevator for a bit, riding up and down as people

#36: Flash Mobs
No longer the stuff of musicals, you can get a group of friends together,
create your own choreography, and draw attention to your event by

#37: Face Paint
Again, this is one better reserved for when you won’t be in class. Paint
your face to promote your event- even if your face doesn’t say what the
paint is for, people will ask. When they do, be prepared to tell them all

#38: DIY /Make Your Own Hats
We learned from Diamond Jubilee and the Royal Wedding- people will pay
attention to an outrageous hat. Borrow that cue, and create a hat that depicts
the theme of your event; when asked about it, tell people how it connects to

#39: Bike Messenger
Does a member of your group have a bike? Ask them to ride around
campus with a banner or other event information on their bike. Even
when shackled to the bike racks, the information will stand out. (IMAGE

#40: Clothespins
Write your event information on clothespins, and clip them to the
backpacks, coats, and hoodies of your friends. Once they find the
clothespin, they’ll probably examine it to see where it came from. Boom.
