New 24/7 online library available July 1
Beginning July 1, all APWA members will see a significant increase in the value of their
       membership.
On that date, APWA members will be able to participate in live Click, Listen & Learn
presentations without a registration fee, access previously recorded Click, Listen &
Learn programs at no charge, access content from past International Public Works Con-
gress and Exposition sessions at no extra charge, read downloadable versions of select
books from the APWA Store at no charge, view select podcasts and track Continuing
Education Units and Professional Development Hour credits without an administra-
       tive recording fee.
Members will be able to access this content at any time, making scheduling and the
      approval process no longer necessary.
The APWA board approved a dues increase of $15 per member (excluding re-
tired and student members) to fund this new benefit. For example, an individ-
ual membership will be $164 (up from $149 a year) ago, beginning with the July
1, 2012 membership renewal cycle. However, the cost for just ONE Click, Listen
& Learn program is $175 for members and $300 for non-members. Taking advan-
tage of just one of the resources in the 24/7 online library more than pays for the
    increase in your individual membership.
The renewal cycle will remain the same. As an example, a member whose membership
does not expire until January, will be able to take advantage of the new 24/7 online re-
source library for six months without incurring any additional cost.
For more information, contact your Chapter leaders or call APWA at 1-800-848-APWA
    (2792).

and allow attendees to observe the operation right there
in the field. After everyone has had an opportunity to see
the recycling train in action, APS staff will host a Q & A
discussion during lunch. Attendees will leave with a thorough
understanding of how the CIR process works, the equipment that
is utilized, and the cost savings that are realized with this environ-
mentally friendly reconstruction method. All we ask is that
folks RSVP to make sure we can properly prepare for
                            lunch.

                            Cold In-Place Recycling
When roadways begin exhibiting significant failures in the asphaltic
surface and underlying base material, Cold In-Place Recycling (CIR)
is often the most cost effective reconstruction method avail-
able. CIR allows road owners to recycle 100% of the existing as-
phalt and a predetermined portion of the base if necessary. By
recycling and reusing materials that the owner has already pur-
chased, CIR offers a much more cost effective and environmentally
friendly approach to roadway widening and/or reconstruction.

RSVP: Please email Bob Siffert, Asphalt Paving Systems
@ rrsiff1@hotmail.com with the date you are in-
                      terested in attending.

APWA FL CHAPTER YOUNG PROFESSIONAL EXPO
The Young Professionals Expo is held each year at the
Annual Meeting and Trade Show to engage students and
young professionals who are interested in the vast careers of
Public Works including but not limited to: engineering, public
administration, business management, construction manage-
ment and surveying. The Expo is designed to welcome new
Public Works Professionals and offered an introduction to
APWA and benefits of membership. Attendees took turns
going around the introducing themselves and discussing their
current involvement in Public Works. Chapter Leadership
also discussed their involvement with APWA and how it has
enriched their lives and careers. Attendees also got a tour of
the different tools that APWA offers including APWA’s
WEAREPUBLICWORKS social media forum, infoNOW com-
munities, the National Young Professional Steering Commit-
tee website, the Chapter’s use of Facebook and twitter to promote event information.
To further support the Chapter’s Young Professional Initiative, an evening networking reception was also added to the event.
This year’s event provided an inviting environment where both aspiring and veteran Public Works professionals, and both public and
private-sector employees had an opportunity to come together to discuss what we all have in common; the love for public works!
We even had our own APWA Florida Chapter President Kim Kirby AND our APWA National President Diane
Linderman join us for this social event! The event continues to evolve and helps the Florida Chapter family to grow.

  • 4. Page 4 APWA Central Florida Branch . APWA Central FL Branch NEW Newsletter Editor and a Central FL Branch Young Professional! Christiane Nelson is a project manager with Universal Engineering Sciences, Inc., in Orlando, Florida. She manages municipality and Florida Department of Transportation continuing services con- tracts as well as the contractor quality control roadway projects for the Construction Services Department. In addition, Christiane manages en- vironmental and geotechnical projects in the Central Florida area. She earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering technology from the University of Central Florida and is currently completing her second bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. Christiane joined APWA in 2011 and is part of the Young Professionals Group. She is excited to be assuming a leadership role in the APWA newsletter production team. New 24/7 online library available July 1 Beginning July 1, all APWA members will see a significant increase in the value of their membership. On that date, APWA members will be able to participate in live Click, Listen & Learn presentations without a registration fee, access previously recorded Click, Listen & Learn programs at no charge, access content from past International Public Works Con- gress and Exposition sessions at no extra charge, read downloadable versions of select books from the APWA Store at no charge, view select podcasts and track Continuing Education Units and Professional Development Hour credits without an administra- tive recording fee. Members will be able to access this content at any time, making scheduling and the approval process no longer necessary. The APWA board approved a dues increase of $15 per member (excluding re- tired and student members) to fund this new benefit. For example, an individ- ual membership will be $164 (up from $149 a year) ago, beginning with the July 1, 2012 membership renewal cycle. However, the cost for just ONE Click, Listen & Learn program is $175 for members and $300 for non-members. Taking advan- tage of just one of the resources in the 24/7 online library more than pays for the increase in your individual membership. The renewal cycle will remain the same. As an example, a member whose membership does not expire until January, will be able to take advantage of the new 24/7 online re- source library for six months without incurring any additional cost. For more information, contact your Chapter leaders or call APWA at 1-800-848-APWA (2792).

  • 7. Spring 2012 Page 7 APWA Central FL Branch Onsite Cold In-Place Recycling Lunch and Learn WHEN: Thursday, June 14 AND Wednesday, July 18, 2012 TOPIC: Cold In-Place Recycling Onsite Lunch and Learn LOCATION: Orange County, FL—exact location will be emailed to you closer to the date if you RSVP APS will provide a brief explanation of the CIR process and allow attendees to observe the operation right there in the field. After everyone has had an opportunity to see the recycling train in action, APS staff will host a Q & A discussion during lunch. Attendees will leave with a thorough understanding of how the CIR process works, the equipment that is utilized, and the cost savings that are realized with this environ- mentally friendly reconstruction method. All we ask is that folks RSVP to make sure we can properly prepare for lunch. Cold In-Place Recycling When roadways begin exhibiting significant failures in the asphaltic surface and underlying base material, Cold In-Place Recycling (CIR) is often the most cost effective reconstruction method avail- able. CIR allows road owners to recycle 100% of the existing as- phalt and a predetermined portion of the base if necessary. By recycling and reusing materials that the owner has already pur- chased, CIR offers a much more cost effective and environmentally friendly approach to roadway widening and/or reconstruction. RSVP: Please email Bob Siffert, Asphalt Paving Systems @ rrsiff1@hotmail.com with the date you are in- terested in attending.

  • 11. Spring 2012 Page 11 APWA Florida Chapter 2012 Annual Meeting & Trade Show If you missed the Annual Meeting this year in Tampa, you missed a fantastic show!! Many Central Florida Branch Members were there as you will see in the photos below. AWARDS Amy Blaida (RS&H) received the FL Chapter Young Leader Award; and Althea Parrish (City of Sanford) received the President’s Award!! Congratulations !! APWA FL CHAPTER YOUNG PROFESSIONAL EXPO The Young Professionals Expo is held each year at the Annual Meeting and Trade Show to engage students and young professionals who are interested in the vast careers of Public Works including but not limited to: engineering, public administration, business management, construction manage- ment and surveying. The Expo is designed to welcome new Public Works Professionals and offered an introduction to APWA and benefits of membership. Attendees took turns going around the introducing themselves and discussing their current involvement in Public Works. Chapter Leadership also discussed their involvement with APWA and how it has enriched their lives and careers. Attendees also got a tour of the different tools that APWA offers including APWA’s WEAREPUBLICWORKS social media forum, infoNOW com- munities, the National Young Professional Steering Commit- tee website, the Chapter’s use of Facebook and twitter to promote event information. To further support the Chapter’s Young Professional Initiative, an evening networking reception was also added to the event. This year’s event provided an inviting environment where both aspiring and veteran Public Works professionals, and both public and private-sector employees had an opportunity to come together to discuss what we all have in common; the love for public works! We even had our own APWA Florida Chapter President Kim Kirby AND our APWA National President Diane Linderman join us for this social event! The event continues to evolve and helps the Florida Chapter family to grow.
