  4. Safety may seem like a simple issue that doesn’t need discussion, but it can bring up some interesting questions about who is responsible for an intern if something happens at the internship site. We’re going to go through some questions that will bring these issues into focus.
  5. Ultimately hospital comes after you.
  6. Ask them.
  7. Ask audience: if you didn’t attend orientation I b/c you already have a job, you had to sign an ethical conduct agreement, a requirement. How many people haven’t signed one yet?
  8. 70% Most of the people who have full-time positions after graduation have had internships. Don’t expect your employer to offer you a full-time job, though. Potential references, colleagues are in professional network, etc.
  9. Talk about how employers have identified critical thinking as one of the biggest areas where today’s students lack experience and skills. Have students talk about ways to approach problems and projects. Can’t just ask what do I do? Think of some focused questions you can ask.
  10. Discuss using company time for company work, talk about offices that monitor internet usage. How do you handle criticism from your supervisor? What is employer really saying to you? They’re thinking that you aren’t serious, you aren’t going to work out with them.
  11. Examples if student can’t think of anything: Gary is having an affair with the secretary, Gary is getting divorced and wife is taking him to court, Gary has been reprimanded by supervisor, Gary is using company time/resources to run a side business that no one knows about Don’t get sucked into office gossip if possible. Ask them for other responses that will squelch the gossiper from seeking you out. What is legitimate vs what is nonsense. How do you handle these two situations?

Remind them that mid semester employer evaluation is an opportunity for them to improve their performance Tell them we will encourage employer to do evaluation, but there is no guarantee Your end of semester evaluation: gives you the opportunity to evaluate the program and your employer We can find out about less desirable internships this way
