THE INNOVATIVE ASPECTS OF CYTER
Modern medical advancements provide rationale for integration of various traditional
healing techniques like Yoga to promote healing, health, and longevity. Thanks to the
foresight of Chairman and management of SBVU and MGMCRI, CYTER, the Centre for
Yoga Therapy, Education and research was started on 1 November 2010 and is
functioning in 1st floor, I block, adjacent to the main Hospital block, MGMCRI.
“There are many centers where you can get a
Yoga degree, attend a Yoga therapy session or
find Yoga research being undertaken. However,
to have all three happening in one place is surely
innovative. This center is indeed a role-model
that combines the best of the East with that of the
West.”
- Joseph le Page, Integrative Yoga Therapy, USA
At CYTER we have an integrated set up where
we are educating future Yoga therapists while
simultaneously helping patients recover from
illnesses and at the same time developing an
understanding through scientific research.
Whereas Yoga is usually found in departments of
Physical Education and Sports in most
universities, we at CYTER have it in a medical
institution thus enhancing the learning curve of
our trainees. This also enables us to offer
integrative and holistic therapeutic benefits for
patients in our hospital as many departments refer patients for Yoga therapy regularly.
CYTER Report- Oct 2017 Page 2
IMPORTANCE OF CYTER:
The Govt of India, Ministry of Health & FW is currently promoting indigenous systems of
health in a strong manner through AYUSH. The limitations of modern medicine in
managing stress induced psychosomatic, chronic illnesses are the strength of Yoga and
hence a holistic integration of both systems enables best quality of patient care. CYTER
can be projected a nodal center to train medical educators and administrators for setting
up such integrative health centers in our country as we have the necessary infrastructure
and man power. We can proudly state that it is only in the supportive and innovative
milieu of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth that the holistic art and science of Yoga, our cultural
heritage, has been able to reach both the classes and the masses of our society
optimally, effectively and holistically.
VISION:
 The innovative integration of traditional Yoga therapy with modern medical
science, through a conscious focus on salutogenesis, thus enhancing holistic
health and wellness.
MISSION:
 Promotion of positive health through application of rationale Yoga therapy for
patients of various medical conditions.
 Education of qualified and competent Yoga therapists capable of practicing
integrative medicine.
 Creation of qualitative and quantitative research evidence for rationale
application of Yoga as a preventive, promotive, rehabilitative and curative
therapy.
 Investigation of the role of Yoga therapy as complementary medicine in
addition to modern medicine or in situations where modern medicine has no
definite cure or palliation.
 Investigation of the role of Yoga therapy in association with other methods of
complementary medicine.

YOGA EDUCATION:
Holistic health, integrative treatment and mind–body medicine are now buzz words.
Integrating Yoga with modern medicine will enable us to produce holistic physicians for
health delivery of tomorrow as integrative medicine becomes popular.
Our PG Diploma in Yoga Therapy (PGDYT) is one of the innovative courses in the world
as it is offered through a medical institution and brings together the ancient wisdom of
Yoga with the evidence based approach of modern medicine. The course is conducted
by experienced faculties who have Yoga and modern medical training as well as a
wealth of therapeutic and research experience with more than 200 publications to their
credit.
CYTER Report- Oct 2017 Page 4
Three batches of students have graduated from our PG Diploma in Yoga Therapy
(PGDYT) and Fourth batch of students are awaiting their results. We are very proud that
they are the first set of Yoga Therapists graduating from a modern medical university.
Currently 7 students are undergoing the certificate program (CFY), 3 PGDYT students
and 3 students for the MPhil in Yoga Therapy. Two candidates have been selected for
PhD in Yoga Therapy program.
Inspired by the success of this course, and to provide a new pathway for the aspiring
healers across health profession, credit based programs were started with the following
options:
1. Pursue Certificate Courses in Yoga Therapy of three months duration (total four
courses of 8 Credit points, each), with options for exit after any course, thus obtaining
a course completion certificate. (8 x 4 = 32 Credits)
2. Appear for PGDYT comprehensive examination, based on the four courses of study
(8 x 4 = 32 + 2Cr for portfolio = 34 Credits)
3. Continue further to M. Phil. program of one year (38 credits), subject to the candidate
holding a Master’s Degree (science graduates will be given preference).
4. This program eventually leads to PhD Program in Yoga therapy that has been
introduced in academic year 2017-18.
Fig.1: Courses and milestones in Yoga Therapy Programs- Four2One Model
C1, C2, C3 and C4 are Core Certificate courses leading to PGDYT. The two Electives E1
and E2 are to be chosen from 12 topics related to Yoga Therapy and its clinical
applications, which then culminates in one Major Research Project in M Phil.
To further facilitate ease of student progression, we have introduced both lateral entry
and exit provisions in the courses. Students can leave after completing the certificate
courses or continue in the PGDYT. Those students who have a Master’s degree (science
graduates will be given preference) can join the M Phil program if they have completed
PGDYT from SBV earlier. This provision for lateral entry and exit is summarized in Fig.2

The major highlight of the new programs is adoption of Credit Based Choice System
(CBCS) recommended by the NAAC and UGC as a major reform in higher education. As
a corollary to this system, a competency based approach has been proposed for the new
programs.
Advantages of the Credit System
To the learners Focus from teacher-centric to learner-centric education
Flexibility to choose courses according to their interest
Flexibility to work according to their own pace and style of learning
Facilitates learners’ mobility across the courses, programs,
institutes
It accounts for the self-learning efforts made by the student
Linked with Grading, which is fair to the students, compared with
marks
To the Institutes Provides scope for fixing, and assessing learning outcomes in an
objective and transparent manner. Credit calculations are based on
competencies and linked with study hours, rather than routine time
table approach.
Possibility to optimize the teaching workload, and respect teachers’

expertise, interest and preference
Twinning mechanisms can be developed with other institutes, to
allow credit transfers
To the System,
Parents, Society
To ensure uniformity in standards across the States, nation
Facilitates issues of recognition and accreditation
To move towards international standards
Ultimately, it promotes quality assurance to the society
Competency Based Approach
Competency based approach is the haul mark of a progressive curriculum. Knowledge
and skills are of no significance, unless they are used by the professionals for the
benefit of communities.
Considering the present scenario of health professions education in the country and
based on future projections it is possible to identify the following core competencies,
expected out of the future health professions educators.
Core Competencies expected at the end of Yoga Therapy Programs
The above core competencies are the main essence of the programs. However, the way
in which they are learnt and assessed varies at different levels. For instance, a student
may be taught and assessed for the ‘knowledge of facts and concepts’ at the certificate
level, ‘understanding of concepts’ at the Diploma level and ‘application of concepts’ in a
real life or simulated situation at the M.Phil level.
In summary, the proposed program gives immense flexibility for learners to pursue
diverse careers as Yoga Therapists and enables creation of a pool of trained Yoga
therapists possessing requisite skills and competence to impart sound Yoga therapy in
different medical conditions. The system provides ample opportunities for self-directed
learning, guided by extensive mentoring, small group learning and reflective practice
within the campus as well as in their work places. It provides a new career pathway for
the students and teachers to synergize the capacity building in Yoga Therapy education.
The program ultimately aims to create human resource capable of cutting edge research
into fundamental aspects of Yoga as well as its applications in different medical
conditions.

SBV YOGA FEST 2016
As per guidelines issued by UGC and Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India
the International Day of Yoga 2016 was celebrated at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth in a
grand manner from 19-21 June 2016. As a prelude to this event, SBV YOGA
FEST was celebrated on 25-26 May 2016 to create awareness of Yoga amongst
the university student community. SBV Yoga Fest 2016 got off to a colourful start
at MGMC&RI on 25 May 2016 with its inauguration by the respected Vice
Chancellor of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth Prof KR Sethuraman in the presence of the
Dean (Research and AHS) Prof N Ananthakrishnan and Deans of the medical,
dental and nursing faculties of the deemed university. More than 250 medical,
dental and nursing students as well as faculty members and invited guests are
participating in the two day event that has been organized on 25 and 26 May
2016 as a prelude to the International Day of Yoga to be celebrated worldwide
on 21 June 2016.
The Common Yoga
Protocol booklet prepared
by Ministry of AYUSH
was officially handed over
by the Vice Chancellor to
Prof AR Srinivasan
(Registrar of SBV), Prof
Ravishankar (Dean,
MGMC&RI), Prof
Carounanidy Usha
(Dean, IGIDS) and Prof K Renuka (Principal, KGNC).
In his Yoga Fest oration, Prof KR Sethuraman expressed the need for health
professionals to look towards salutogenesis, an understanding of the internal and
external factors that induce health rather than merely mechanically focusing on
pathogenesis of disease. "Human beings are flawed as they are always
susceptible to disease. Yet, some stay healthy even in the worst of conditions.
This is because they have a sense of coherence within themselves, find meaning
in their lives and hence are more at ease with their lives" said he.
Yoga is an ancient system that enables us to create positive environments both
within ourselves as well as in the surrounding environment. This harmonious and
dynamic balance between the internal and external worlds produces health and
wellbeing and healing starts to occur rather than merely managing with
symptomatic cures routinely given out by health professionals.
In his felicitation address, Prof N Ananthakrishnan, the Dean of Research and
Allied Health Sciences in Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth elucidated the steps being taken
by Ministry of AYUSH and UGC to facilitate the integration of Yoga and traditional
systems of healing in modern medical and paramedical education. Yoga should
be part of all courses as it is our gift to the world and has the potential to be an
integrative modality of healing working in tandem with modern medicine.
SBV has been a forerunner in this integration of the old and the new as for the
past six years Yoga therapy and music therapy have been brought into the
hospital services for benefits of the patients and post graduate programs are
running successfully. He announced that SBV will soon also have doctoral
programs in these fields as the Government of India is willing to administratively

and financially support international students who wish to do such programs in
Indian universities.
Prof AR Srinivasan, Registrar SBV sang a beautiful poetic benediction on the
occasion praying for success of the International Day of Yoga worldwide. His
heartfelt rendition in the Raga Desh touched everyone and created a sense of
deep calm and peace from within.
"Yoga is one of the best lifestyles that enables us to live a happy and healthy life"
said Prod Madanmohan, Director CYTER and Head Department of Physiology in
his talk. He explained the traditional and modern aspects of lifestyle and

CYTER Activities since 2010: History and achivements

  • 1. CYTER Report- Oct 2017 Page 1 THE INNOVATIVE ASPECTS OF CYTER Modern medical advancements provide rationale for integration of various traditional healing techniques like Yoga to promote healing, health, and longevity. Thanks to the foresight of Chairman and management of SBVU and MGMCRI, CYTER, the Centre for Yoga Therapy, Education and research was started on 1 November 2010 and is functioning in 1st floor, I block, adjacent to the main Hospital block, MGMCRI. “There are many centers where you can get a Yoga degree, attend a Yoga therapy session or find Yoga research being undertaken. However, to have all three happening in one place is surely innovative. This center is indeed a role-model that combines the best of the East with that of the West.” - Joseph le Page, Integrative Yoga Therapy, USA At CYTER we have an integrated set up where we are educating future Yoga therapists while simultaneously helping patients recover from illnesses and at the same time developing an understanding through scientific research. Whereas Yoga is usually found in departments of Physical Education and Sports in most universities, we at CYTER have it in a medical institution thus enhancing the learning curve of our trainees. This also enables us to offer integrative and holistic therapeutic benefits for patients in our hospital as many departments refer patients for Yoga therapy regularly.
  • 2. CYTER Report- Oct 2017 Page 2 IMPORTANCE OF CYTER: The Govt of India, Ministry of Health & FW is currently promoting indigenous systems of health in a strong manner through AYUSH. The limitations of modern medicine in managing stress induced psychosomatic, chronic illnesses are the strength of Yoga and hence a holistic integration of both systems enables best quality of patient care. CYTER can be projected a nodal center to train medical educators and administrators for setting up such integrative health centers in our country as we have the necessary infrastructure and man power. We can proudly state that it is only in the supportive and innovative milieu of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth that the holistic art and science of Yoga, our cultural heritage, has been able to reach both the classes and the masses of our society optimally, effectively and holistically. VISION:  The innovative integration of traditional Yoga therapy with modern medical science, through a conscious focus on salutogenesis, thus enhancing holistic health and wellness. MISSION:  Promotion of positive health through application of rationale Yoga therapy for patients of various medical conditions.  Education of qualified and competent Yoga therapists capable of practicing integrative medicine.  Creation of qualitative and quantitative research evidence for rationale application of Yoga as a preventive, promotive, rehabilitative and curative therapy.  Investigation of the role of Yoga therapy as complementary medicine in addition to modern medicine or in situations where modern medicine has no definite cure or palliation.  Investigation of the role of Yoga therapy in association with other methods of complementary medicine. FACULTY MEMBERS OF CYTER: DIRECTOR: Yogacharya Dr. ANANDA BALAYOGI BHAVANANI MBBS, ADY, DPC, DSM, PGDFH, PGDY, MD (AM), FIAY, C-IAYT DEPUTY DIRECTOR: Yogachemmal Dr. MEENA RAMANATHAN BSc, MA, CYT, DYNS, PGDY, MSc, PhD, C-IAYT YOGA LECTURER: Yogachemmal G DAYANIDY BSc, CYT, PGDYE, DRAY, MCA, MSc (Yoga), PGDYT YOGA INSTRUCTORS: Sri P DANUSHAPNADEESH, BSc, MCA, DYEd, PGDYT Smt G SARULATHA, Diploma Yoga and Bharatanatyam
  • 3. CYTER Report- Oct 2017 Page 3 YOGA THERAPY: CYTER is conducting a scientifically sound Yoga therapy programme through its Yoga Therapy OPD in I Block from 9 am to 1 pm, Monday-Saturday. Consultations are offered by Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, Director CYTER and Dr Meena Ramanathan, Deputy Director. Qualified Yoga instructors are imparting the schedules daily from 9 am to 4.30 pm. Individualised and group Yoga therapy sessions are being conducted for various medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, musculoskeletal and psychiatric disorders with excellent feedback from participants. Yoga therapy and lifestyle consultations are offered daily as part of Basic, Superior, Complete Cardiac and Deluxe Health Check packages of Master Heath Check-up in the Corporate Services Wing of the hospital since October 2013. We are also offering non-therapeutic general sessions for faculty, staff and students of SBVU from 6 to 7am and 4.30 to 5.30pm on all working days. Integrating Yoga with modern medicine will enable us to produce holistic physicians for health delivery of tomorrow as integrative medicine becomes popular. Our PG Diploma in Yoga Therapy (PGDYT) is one of the innovative courses in the world as it is offered through a medical institution and brings together the ancient wisdom of Yoga with the evidence based approach of modern medicine. The course is conducted by experienced faculties who have Yoga and modern medical training as well as a wealth of therapeutic and research experience with more than 200 publications to their credit.
  • 4. CYTER Report- Oct 2017 Page 4 Three batches of students have graduated from our PG Diploma in Yoga Therapy (PGDYT) and Fourth batch of students are awaiting their results. We are very proud that they are the first set of Yoga Therapists graduating from a modern medical university. Currently 7 students are undergoing the certificate program (CFY), 3 PGDYT students and 3 students for the MPhil in Yoga Therapy. Two candidates have been selected for PhD in Yoga Therapy program. Inspired by the success of this course, and to provide a new pathway for the aspiring healers across health profession, credit based programs were started with the following options: 1. Pursue Certificate Courses in Yoga Therapy of three months duration (total four courses of 8 Credit points, each), with options for exit after any course, thus obtaining a course completion certificate. (8 x 4 = 32 Credits) 2. Appear for PGDYT comprehensive examination, based on the four courses of study (8 x 4 = 32 + 2Cr for portfolio = 34 Credits) 3. Continue further to M. Phil. program of one year (38 credits), subject to the candidate holding a Master’s Degree (science graduates will be given preference). 4. This program eventually leads to PhD Program in Yoga therapy that has been introduced in academic year 2017-18. Fig.1: Courses and milestones in Yoga Therapy Programs- Four2One Model C1, C2, C3 and C4 are Core Certificate courses leading to PGDYT. The two Electives E1 and E2 are to be chosen from 12 topics related to Yoga Therapy and its clinical applications, which then culminates in one Major Research Project in M Phil. To further facilitate ease of student progression, we have introduced both lateral entry and exit provisions in the courses. Students can leave after completing the certificate courses or continue in the PGDYT. Those students who have a Master’s degree (science graduates will be given preference) can join the M Phil program if they have completed PGDYT from SBV earlier. This provision for lateral entry and exit is summarized in Fig.2 CERTIFICATE COURSES PGDYT M. Phil
  • 5. CYTER Report- Oct 2017 Page 5 Fig.2: Career Pathway in Yoga Therapy (YT) with provisions for lateral entry and exit. The major highlight of the new programs is adoption of Credit Based Choice System (CBCS) recommended by the NAAC and UGC as a major reform in higher education. As a corollary to this system, a competency based approach has been proposed for the new programs. Advantages of the Credit System To the learners Focus from teacher-centric to learner-centric education Flexibility to choose courses according to their interest Flexibility to work according to their own pace and style of learning Facilitates learners’ mobility across the courses, programs, institutes It accounts for the self-learning efforts made by the student Linked with Grading, which is fair to the students, compared with marks To the Institutes Provides scope for fixing, and assessing learning outcomes in an objective and transparent manner. Credit calculations are based on competencies and linked with study hours, rather than routine time table approach. Possibility to optimize the teaching workload, and respect teachers’ Lateral Exit Lateral Entry Lateral Exit
  • 6. CYTER Report- Oct 2017 Page 6 expertise, interest and preference Twinning mechanisms can be developed with other institutes, to allow credit transfers To the System, Parents, Society To ensure uniformity in standards across the States, nation Facilitates issues of recognition and accreditation To move towards international standards Ultimately, it promotes quality assurance to the society Competency Based Approach Competency based approach is the haul mark of a progressive curriculum. Knowledge and skills are of no significance, unless they are used by the professionals for the benefit of communities. Considering the present scenario of health professions education in the country and based on future projections it is possible to identify the following core competencies, expected out of the future health professions educators. Core Competencies expected at the end of Yoga Therapy Programs The above core competencies are the main essence of the programs. However, the way in which they are learnt and assessed varies at different levels. For instance, a student may be taught and assessed for the ‘knowledge of facts and concepts’ at the certificate level, ‘understanding of concepts’ at the Diploma level and ‘application of concepts’ in a real life or simulated situation at the M.Phil level. In summary, the proposed program gives immense flexibility for learners to pursue diverse careers as Yoga Therapists and enables creation of a pool of trained Yoga therapists possessing requisite skills and competence to impart sound Yoga therapy in different medical conditions. The system provides ample opportunities for self-directed learning, guided by extensive mentoring, small group learning and reflective practice within the campus as well as in their work places. It provides a new career pathway for the students and teachers to synergize the capacity building in Yoga Therapy education. The program ultimately aims to create human resource capable of cutting edge research into fundamental aspects of Yoga as well as its applications in different medical conditions.
