Dyscalculia Awareness

  1. 1. DyscalculiaVisual Processing Impaired
  2. 2. DyscalculiaMath Computation “requires the use of many complex brain functions working together toward a common goal” (“Pbs,” 2012). 2
  3. 3. Dyscalculia AssessmentDo you have it? – Dyscalculia test Available at: http://shop.firstandbest.co.uk/product_info .php?products_id=755 3
  4. 4. Features of Dyscalculia• Students lack computational skills required for deriving solutions from mathematical equations. – Complex brain functions working together to form a common goal – Requires ability to process thoughts of reaching solutions 4
  5. 5. Math Disabilities Arise At AnyAge• Students use memory to “recall rules and formulas, recognize patterns, invoke rules about sequential ordering” (“Pbs,” 2012)• Equate multi-step equations, advanced language skills, and instructions that explain rational processes. 5
  6. 6. Results of Dyscalculia• Adults are also affected by Dyscalculia – People with “poor numeracy skills are twice as likely to be unemployed” (Hanning, 2010). 6
  7. 7. Symptoms• Children with Dyscalculia lack ability to recall basic math skills. – Facts, Procedures, Rules, Formulas – Difficulty remembering frequent patterns – Forget steps of computation – Difficulty with steps and sequence 7
  8. 8. Symptoms (cont’d) – Forget or lose interest in the goal – Feel overloaded with math problems – Copy problems incorrectly – “Difficulties in math are often related to a form of math phobia” (Russell, 2012). 8
  9. 9. Knowledge TransferSome students with Dyscalculia have difficulties, for others it’s impossibleLacking abilities to identify important pieces of equations, solutions generated lack reasonMultiple demands in complex equations cause confusion 9
  10. 10. Solutions• Build a foundation providing strategies to visualize • Use real life situations when possible• Use pictures, words or graphs to help relate to real world• Maintain a positive attitude 10
  11. 11. Solutions (cont’d)• Use fun approach through card and computer games for basic facts and multiplication tables• Ensure understanding of all symbols 11
