10. About id E
Our Design Driven Approach.
(or, the method to our madness)
We know that innovation doesn’t happen by chance. It
isn’t a matter of luck or being surrounded by black
turtle neck creative gurus. Innovation can be managed,
directed and produced when needed. Though not the
linear process we are used to in business it does have
rules, a basic direction and some best practices. We use
I D E A our innovation methodology called IDEA Engineering
which brings together the best of foundation processes
in Innovation like Osborn-Parnes CPS, PDCA,
engineering AcceleratedInnovation,ThinkX as well as Design
Thinking principles. The key mindset and practices in
our method are the same as those that drive innovation
at some of the most recognized innovative companies
like Herman Miller, Apple, Google, Red Bull, Virgin and
Gore. This approach promotes collaboration and guides
teams from discovering the roots of the problems
right through commercialization of solutions.

Within the four stages we have eight key steps that build one to the other. Think of these as deliverables that help us push forward.
Our approach is based on truths we have discovered through real world trial and error. They help guide the way we apply IDEA
Engineering and assure that your innovation efforts don’t fail. They challenge the way most organizations do business and are part
of the keys that make our approach work in the real world. Here is just a few of them:
•Rubber Band Effect - Sometimes we find we need to take a step backwards as we discover new things.
•Doing Over Planning - Planning sounds good but it depends on making assumptions. Doing is about going out and trying
something to learn first hand what works and what doesn’t.
•Human Centric - Thinking more along the lines of anthropologists where observation leads to better insights and to empathy
with the consumer/costumer. Observe and understand.
•Storytelling and Visuals over spreadsheets - This means that numbers alone cannot tell the human side of the story.
During our sessions we collect visual data in the form of pictures and video so they better translate our learnings and conclusions
into stories that direct our thinking in more concrete and real ways.
•Radical Collaboration - Where possible we like to source ideas from beyond just those people on the team. This can mean
partners, non-related departments and even consumers/customers.
13. TRAINING IN OUR APPROACH
Applied IDEA Engineering™ is a 2 day immersion into our design driven
approach to innovation and collaborative creative problem solving and includes learning
the theory and applying it to an actual goal challenge or problem. In a two day session
we apply this training against a real world challenge your team is facing so that they get
real world experience with IDEA Engineering and the tips and techniques that make
innovation happen. In a two day session workshop and facilitation of an actual session
come together.
IDEA Engineering™ is an intensive 1 day workshop in the process and
techniques that lead to this design thinking approach. It is learn by doing, quick intense
and fun.

16. HOW DO YOU GET TO MORE & BETTER IDEAS,
FASTER? Going Beyond Traditional Brainstorming to Produce
Innovative and Transformative Solutions for You.
Getting great things done today is not easy. Changes come faster and faster and keeping up with the work load is
often near to impossible. In an interconnected and complex world the only real competitive advantage your
organization has today is the power of your ideas - ideas that launch new products and services, develop winning
strategies, conceive of new solutions to new problems, improve efficiencies, stretch your definitions and transcend
opportunities.
But creating new ideas is not easy. We often wait around in the hope that the winning ideas will strike us like
lightning. Or we hold a brainstorming knowing that they rarely produce the results we are looking for. We know
there is a better way.
SeriouslyCreative uses IDEA Engineering to lead catalytic problem solving and ideation meetings that helps your
team look beyond your assumptions and paradigms and focus on productive areas for change that produce high
return on investment. We know how to get people unstuck and thinking in fresh directions while keeping an eye on
the strategic objectives of the company. We call these facilitated meetings SolutionSessions™ and we would like
to show you how they dramatically cut down planning time, produce powerful results in a way that is fun, engaging
and dynamic.
17. So What is a SolutionSession™?
Traditional brainstormings don’t really produce the results we are looking for. But year after year companies fall back to this basic technique in the
hopes that new solutions will miraculously be created. Very innovative companies don’t leave innovation and creative problem solving to chance. They
understand that creative and new solutions are the product of a correct mix of process, techniques, preparation, questions and environment.
We use IDEA Engineering to promote collaboration and guide teams from discovering the roots of the problems right through commercialization of
solutions. We also apply what has been learned from facilitating hundreds of sessions as well as what neuroscience, sociology and business creativity
research have shown us to be true about collaborative problem solving. In our sessions we make sure everyone participates, that all ideas are written
down and that thinking is focused around well devised series of probing questions that expand thinking and possibilities. We also make sure that
people have a healthy amount of fun. Contrary to popular assumption, seriousness in planning is actually counterproductive and teams who are having
fun think up braver and better ideas and are willing to collaborate with co-workers.
And our sessions begin before we even bring your team together. We know that the success of any form of brainstorming depends greatly on how
much planning and session design is done. Teams come to our sessions with clear objectives, open minds and engaged with well managed yet still
flexible two days that makes the most use of your time together.

* We also facilitate Disruption Sessions - ideation sessions specifically designed to get teams to take a fresh look at what they are doing, assuming
and valuing and potentially discover totally new opportunities that were not even been thought of. Think of it as a proactive brainstorming where you
give people permission to start with a fresh piece of paper and the bravery to challenge anything. We think of it as health mental spring cleaning.

DISCOVER how thinking styles impact personal and professional success.
Use those discoveries to improve leadership and MANAGE HIGH-
PERFORMANCE TEAMS OF DIVERSE THINKERS. Based on proven
research designed to increase creativity and innovation.
Description: The Know Your Brain Game gets participants out of their seats and into each others head as they learn about the strengths and weaknesses of their
thinking styles, how to create and manage high performing collaborative teams and how to identify pit falls that stifle group creativity and problem solving. This game
is created on proven research designed to enhance business creativity and innovation and is consistent with the award winning AcceleratedInnovation® process for
group problem solving.
Participants trade cards in order to build profiles of their individual thinking styles. These profiles are turned into a team "brain profile" and are discussed in the
context of team dynamics, how thinking styles work together and how to leverage the team diversity into problem solving success.
23. Thinkathon:
We will lead a three hour ideation session where we created mixed teams who must come us with a large number of new
ideas to address key challenges of your business. Each team of about 8 to 9 people will work together to first understand the
problem and then, stimulated by questions we give them develop a laundry list of ideas. From these ideas they will select
potential winners and develop a general description of the possible solution to present back to the team. 2.5 Hours
24. Company Idol: (2-2.5 Hrs.) High Energy Exercise ideal for Kickoff events, this is a role playing challenge with the objective of
having them show off their organization/product/service knowledge through a group talent competition.
Each team will be given a standard tool kit that includes every day materials such as aluminum foil, scissors, ribbon, paper, “cartulina”,
markers as well as some not-ordinary items such as shower capes, legos and other (as well as their choice from our costume collection).
With this combination of tools each team will have to work together to put create a 3 minute maximum skit to present to the entire team.
The SeriouslyCreative spin will be that they have to do every presentation based on a secret theme /style that range from: Soap Opera
News Broadcast. In other words, they could be presenting your company’s key products and services in the style of a Cooking Show.
Each team will have 40 minutes to work on their skits with the guidance and assistance of our SeriouslyCreative team, and then we will get
together to enjoy their presentations. A panel of judges will pick the winning team evaluating them on: creativity, participation, content,
punctuality and general delivery. SeriouslyCreative Prizes will be awarded to the winning team
This exercise engages groups to work together leveraging their strengths to tackle a creative challenge. This technique of presentation
pushes teams to have to look for different ways to present their knowledge and solutions as they show flexibility having to adapt to non-
traditional conditions. But all in all it is a fun integration teambuilding activity they will remember for time to come.

Welcome to your Innovation Trainer Guide Notes for the PowerPoint Slides that will help you lead 1-Day Accelerated Innovation & Creativity Training Workshops featuring the KnowBrainer® Innovation Tool.\n\nThe Notes pages of the PowerPoint have “sections that are labeled with Comments, Tips and Suggestion. The Notes text will help trainers better communicate the instructions and activities related to the slide at the top of each page.\n \nYou will also find Section Divider Slides that are normally “hidden” within PowerPoint so they are not visible to audiences during presentations. The electronic version of the PowerPoint Slides has additional bonus slides that are not used for the 1-Day Workshop, but are useful when facilitating longer courses. In the spirit of being “green” and saving trees to sustain a healthier planet, these additional slides have NOT been printed in this Trainer Guide. \n  \nNOTE:\nThe slide numbers are printed in the lower left corner next to the slides located at the top of each Trainer Guide Slide Notes page. However, since not all slides are printed, it may appear that some pages are missing from the printouts.\n
