HOW TO TEACH ENGLISH
AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
TO THE CHILDREN UNDER
THE AGE OF 5 TO 10
YEARS
Before Discussing my Topic
I personaly visited many schools in my city
and I also have a good experience of teaching
English in various schools, I felt that the
method which is applied in our society for
teaching English as a second language is not
applicable, relevant & appropriate.
While visiting the schools I observed
I personaly visited many schools in my city
and I also have a good experience of teaching
English in various schools, I felt that the
method which is applied in our society for
teaching English as a second language is not
applicable, relevant & appropriate.
 What type of learning background do
the learners have?
 What are the objectives of this class?
 What learning materials and
resources are available?
Things need to consider while
teaching Grammar
Grammar tells us the "rules" of a language; but in
fact no language has rules. If we use the word
"rules", we suggest that somebody created the rules
first and then spoke the language, like a new game.
But languages did not start like that. Languages
started by people making sounds which evolved into
words, phrases and sentences. No commonly-
spoken language is fixed. All languages change over
time.
What we call "grammar" is simply a reflection of a
language at a particular time.
Grammar is the system of a language.
People think that . . .
Is Grammar necessary for
Children under the age of 5 to 10
years?
Even they are not able to
understand grammatical terms
and explanations about
language.
The Answer is
NO!
Does L1 help children in
learning L2?
The Answer is
YES!
Then how can one teach them
English as a Second Language?
Build learners’ confidence
Give
to the language
what they speak first..
So our
methodology
should be very
intrested &
adding energy
Beginners
get tired
quickly
You can do it . . . . . . . !
Methodology
Show
Show the student
something to
explain the word or
sentence. Say
Teacher to clearly
pronounce the word or
sentence.
Try
Student to attempt
speaking the word or
sentence.
Repeat
Repetition until the
word or sentence
spoken correctly.
Mould
Teacher corrects the
students mistakes.
Children become more intrested in
learning if they are provided gaming
context.
What are children like as learners?
• They:
• Learn in a variaty of ways, for example, by watching, by
listening, by imitating, by doing things
• Are not able to understand grammatical rules and explanations
about language
• Try to make sense of situations by making use of non-verbal
clues
• Can generally imitate the sounds they hear quite
accurately and copy the way adults speak
• Are naturally curious
• Love to play and use their imagination
• Are comfortable with routines and enjoy
repetition
• Have quite a short attention span and so need
variety
How can you as a teacher,
help them in learning quite
a new language?
• Make English enjoyable and fun - remember
you are influencing their attitude to language
learning.
• Don’t worry about mistakes. Be encouraging.
Make sure children feel comfortable, and not
afraid to take part.
• Use a lot of gestures, actions, pictures to
demonstrate what you mean.
• Talk a lot to them in English, especially about
things they can see.
• Play games, sing songs, say rhymes and chants
together.
• Tell simple stories in English, using pictures
and acting with different voices.
• Constantly recycle new language but don’t be
afraid to add new things or to use words they
won’t know
• Plan lessons with varied activities, some quiet,
some noisy, some sitting, some standing and
moving
This is the biggest blank
in our education system.
Children feel boring and
difficulties while learning
a new language.
Teacher should make English enjoyable and fun.
 Teacher should Plan lessons with varied activities.
Teacher should use audio visual equipment &
learning tools if available.
Teacher should make practice of the new learners.
Teacher should not get start from make them write
definition.
