Introduction
 During 11th Plan in between 2007 to 2012 the
academic reforms were presented by UGC by
introducing of semester and credit system.
 But recent New Educational Policy-2020 has
helped in execution of semester and credit system.
3
Meaning of Credits in Education
A unit by which the course work is measured.
It determines the number of hours of instructions
required per week
Credits are to measure student’s work and effort
4
Terminology To Be Understand
The B.Sc. Nursing program is a four-year program comprising of eight
semesters that is credit and semester based and choice based only for
elective courses.
 Course: Generally it represent Subject.
 Semester: Six month of duration (Ideally minimum 90 days of actual
teaching days)
 Credit Based Semester System: Number of credits to be completed
to award a degree.
 Choice Based Credit System: Student-centric approach, free to opt
any course.
 Letter Grade: It’s a performance index, represent by letters O, A+. A,
B+, B, C, P, F and Ab.
 Grade Point: It is a numerical weight allotted to each letter grade on
a 10-point scale.
 Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA): It is a measure of
performance of work done in a semester.
 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): It is a measure of overall
cumulative performance of a student over all semesters.
5
How to identify credits
As per new INC syllabus of B.Sc. Nursing
For 1 to 7 Semester:
 Total week per semester- 26 Weeks
 Number of weeks per semester for teaching learning-
20 weeks
For 8th Semester-
 Number of weeks per semester for teaching learning-
22 weeks
6
How to identify credits
Lets identify the credits of Applied Anatomy (1st semester
with 60 prescribed hours)=
Number of prescribed hours
Total number of week allotted for teaching-learning
= 60 / 20
= 3 Hours/ week
In theory one hours equal to one credit per week
Course of Applied Anatomy will have 3 credits
7
How to identify credits for Lab./Practical
Lets identify the credits of Nursing Foundation-I(1st
semester with 80 prescribed hours)=
Number of prescribed hours
Total number of week allotted for teaching-learning
= 80 / 20
= 4 Hours/ week
In Practical two hours equal to one credit per week
Course of Nursing Foundation-I will have 2 credits in
practical
8
How to identify credits for Clinical
Lets identify the credits of Nursing Foundation-I(1st
semester with 160 prescribed hours)=
Number of prescribed hours
Total number of week allotted for teaching-learning
= 160 / 20
= 8 Hours/ week
In Clinical four hours equal to one credit per week
Course of Nursing Foundation-I will have 2 credits in
clinical
For electives its one contact hour per week per
semester equal to one credit

Conclusion
 Uniformity in credits system is missing.
 This is student centric system.
 Students can earn additional credits.
 Students can attempt additional courses.
 It will help in interdisciplinary approach.
 It provides need based and competency based
learning.
 Credits earned at one university can be transferred to
another university.
16
To achieve higher CGPA always secure high grades in
high credit courses but clear all courses (Securing any F
will melt your efforts)
17
Any Doubt ?
18
Thank You
