National Background
ATO was founded by Otis Allan
Glazebrook, Erskine Mayo Ross
and Alfred Marshall, at
the Virginia Military Institute in
1865.
ATO was not established in
imitation of or in opposition to
any existing fraternity.
ATO annually ranks among the
top ten national fraternities for
number of chapters and total
number of members. ATO has
more than 250 active and inactive
chapters with more than 200,000
members and more than 6,500
undergraduate members.

Alpha Tau Omega as the
leader of "The Top Ten of
Fraternity Row.”
ATO was the first fraternity
founded after the Civil War
in 1865, striving to heal the
wounds created by the
devastating war and help
reunite the North and
South.

The Beta Lambda chapter of
Alpha Tau Omega was
founded at the University of
Michigan on December 8,
1888. Seven members were
initiated that night, in a
second story hall on Main
Street in Ann Arbor
The Beta Lambda Alumni
Association (BLAA) was
incorporated on May 21, 190
ATO circa 1980
The chapter house at 1415
Cambridge was constructed
in 1929 for Beta Lambda
6. Local Background
In 1967, Beta Lambda
initiated its 1,000th
member
Beta Lambda won its first
True Merit award in 1980
and went on to win the
award in seven out of the
next ten year
The Beta Lambda Charter
was revoked on April 16,
The original UM ATO house at 1415
2005, after 118 years and Cambridge
over 1,700 initiated
