2. What is social media? Why should I care? Social media is anything you do online that involves more than one person. Examples: facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, blogs, social bookmarking Because employers are getting more and more savy online, you need to pump-up your personal brand (don’t worry, this is explained later)
3. Personal Branding… what? Personal branding is you image—online and off This is possibly the most important thing you should worry about when you are working toward your career! Easy to damaged, hard to build Check out the beginnings of my personal brand
4. Let’s start with what you should already know: Facebook Monitoring content Use it to connect Be open and honest
5. To tweet, or not to tweet? Get one! How to start: Start following people Don’t post non-sense Start by retweeting and posting relevant content Don’t be afraid to stalk people
6. LinkedIn for people without business experience What is it: a professional site that allows people to connect with other people in their field Not a professional? That’s okay! Recruitment Informational Interview
7. Specialty Social Media Sites Location based: Example: foursquare, Gowalla, etc. Facebook BE CAREFUL City life Wiser Earth MyHeadlines Email Industry specific
8. Last words… Everything you put online is permanent. Everything. Own your name You don’t have to be a communications/marketing/media major to get involved You already have an advantage because you’re under 30 years old Warning: get involved, not obsessed!
Editor's Notes
-Monitoring content -only friend people you know: spam, viruses, poor image (esp radical activists) -be positive: show off your image in the best possible light -if you have something negative to say, don’t say it! Some employers monitor your content, and it looks bad if you say something bad about someone (especially your boss or coworkers)-Use it to connect -people on other social media networks are sometimes willing to connect on FB (but some like to keep their private and work lives separate, respect their choice… ask them first on the network you are already connected on) -organizations and causes: important to connect with “target” pages and group on FB to increase your credibility and exposure-Be open and honest -you can’t pretend to be something you aren’t, so don’t even bother -companies want honest people who will perform to the standards they claim to -be yourself because someone will want the real you
-Get one! -own your name-How to start -start following people: focus on industry leaders, colleges you want to apply to, special interests -don’t post non-sense: others don’t like to follow meaningless tweets, status updates are for FB -retweeting and relevant content: always be positive and respectful, join in conversations @ # RT FF adding content will make more people follow you and make those you follow interested in what you have to say -don’t be afraid to stalk people: lots of people are willing to follow you back, so don’t be afraid to make the first move
-what is it -postings of resumes, plans, references, professional connections-not a professional? -you should start to establish your presence-recruitment -some companies skip the use of job search sites or head-hunters -many of the Fortune 500 companies hire exclusively through LinkedIn connections-informational interview -basic concept: you ask to meet up or chat on the phone with someone who is established in the industry you wish to be a part of -this is an opportunity to learn about what it’s like to work in the real world -this is NOT your opportunity to pitch yourself: you should focus on the person you are interviewing, an opportunity might come in the future -be attentive and ask intelligent questions -ask me for more resources if you’re interested in this topic
-Location based -these networks are best used in cities where there is a higher population using them -these are set up like games, but they do give away lots of personal information (decide if that’s really what you want to do…) -I think they are a little creepy, so I don’t use them -My prediction: they will die out eventually because people like their privacy-WiserEarth -sustainability, entrpreneurship, non-profits -mostly international -job postings! -opportunity to connect-MyHeadlines -gives you daily updates on the most important news to you-email -set up a professional account and start directing all college and professional contacts there-industry specific -lots of them, you have to know where to look (start with the other sites and you will find them)
