1. Venice and it’s Lagoon
Where is it Located?
Venice is a very beautiful city. It is located in the Province of Venezia,
Veneto Region, Italy amongst about one hundred different islands. It is also
the capital of that Region. It is in the northern part of Italy close to the border
of Austria, Croatia and Slovenia. It also on the cost of the Adriatic Sea.
Why is it listed on the UNESCO list?
Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world because of it’s
lagoon. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List because it was founded in
the 5th century AD and it has about 118 different island in that region. Some
of the most famous artist have made this city a masterpiece from it’s
architecture to it’s different paintings. The lagoon is 50,000 km² long. In the
middles ages the Veneto Region was the most extraordinary build up of a little archipelago.
The different nicknames are “The Floating City, The City of Water, and City of Canals”, but it
is most famously known for being called “The Floating City” because it seems to be floating
on water. In the 1980’s people thought that Venice was finally stable and would not sink
anymore, but it turns out that they were wrong as they found out later on. Research has said
that Venice is sinking 2 millimeter each year or 3 centimeters each century. However

Why is it an important site?
Venice is a cultural site on the world
heritage list. Venice is a significant city
because it is a very unique, there is no other
city like it in the world. The reasons being it
has existed since the 5th century and
because of the way is was built on a lagoon
with canals, the city had to adapt to it’s
surroundings by building different types of
architecture to make sure that it will be as
stable for as long as it can be.
Who manages the site and how is it being protected?
In 1973 the Italian government introduced a special law which is intended to protect
Venice. The law assists in the protection of landscape, archaeological, historical and artistic
heritage. The overall responsibility for the protection of Venice belongs to the Ministry of
Cultural Heritage and Activities, there are also many local regional government bodies that
help look after Venice and it’s ecosystem. Example of other supporting bodies are: Venice
Water Authority and Port Authority of Venice, Superintendence of Historical and Artistic
Heritage of Venice.

What danger or threats does this site face to it’s
conservation?
The sad thing about Venice is that it will
always be under threat because it is likely to
become an underwater city, as Venice is always
sinking. In 2012 scientist discovered that Venice is
sinking 5 times fast then they thought. Venice is
now incurring more floods. Now that Venice is
sinking more than ever before, people are starting to
get worried and are doing every they can to make
sure that it will be around for as long as possible,
even though some people think that is might sink in
5 decades. In 1973 the Italian government introduced a special law which is intended to
protect Venice.
Why should this site be protected?
This site should be protected because this is such a unique area and so many people
love to visit Venice. It also carries so much history along with it. Now that we know that it is
sinking much more than before we should make sure we find a way to hold onto the
spectacular city so that everyone who lives there won’t lose their house for a long time and it
won’t become a “divers paradise” any time soon.
Why does this site deserve to be placed on the “World’s Most Fascinating Places” list?
This site deserves to be placed on this list because it is a one of a kind city. There is
no other place like this in the world for the reasons shown above. There is so much history
behind this site and if you learn all of the history it is very fascinating. So many people have
different opinions about Venice and it’s future. This site definitely deserve to be on the
“World’s Most Fascinating Place” list.
