The digestive system breaks down food into nutrients which are absorbed and distributed throughout the body. The process begins in the mouth where food is broken down by teeth and enzymes. It then moves to the stomach where it is further broken down by acid and enzymes. Chyme exits the stomach and enters the small intestine where most absorption occurs, aided by the liver, pancreas, and small intestine organs like the villi. Remaining waste moves to the large intestine where water is absorbed, before waste is excreted as feces.
