Kindergarten practicum
1. Kindergarten practicum reflection
What did I do?
I taught English in a group of 5 years old learners. The first days I observed their
dynamic and interviewed the headmaster to know the institution and how they worked. I
was also in contact with the curricular teachers to work interdisciplinary. It really helped
me to organize and plan my practicum period. In each lesson plan I tried to mix activities
including pictures, songs, games, paintings, and stories. I must say that organize the
activities was not so easy for me but the tutor and local teacher’s corrections served me to
improve in every class. Besides, I included a welcome and goodbye song and it became a
routine in which learners already knew what they had to do at the beginning and end of
each lesson.
How did I do it?
Every class I started with a routine song. Then we did a warm-up activity that included
revision topics such as imperatives, classroom objects, etc. Then I introduced the new topic
with a song or a story. For example, when they learned imperatives I introduced the topic
telling to the class a story about a teddy bear. Then pupils practised the new topic doing
different activities such as “listen and circle”, “listen and do the action”, “play a game” like
the treasure hunt, etc. At the end of the lesson we did an activity just to enjoy and relax like
sing and dance a song or play a game like “Simon says”. Five minutes before ending the
lesson we sang the goodbye song.
What can I do differently?
I have to organize the classes in a more fluid way, generating a single context in which
all the activities are connected to each other. I believe that it is very important to learn in
a constructive and social way So if I can organize my classes better then pupils will learn in
a meaningful context. Besides I must include a variety of activities that exploit students’
development so I need to be more creative and look for other alternatives.
What plan should I implement?
I want to include more stories so I thought of searching the internet and buying reading
books with lot of pictures and some that contain sounds or puppets. I am also thinking of
creating my own reading book with the materials necessary to learn the new topic. I found
the following document which will help me to develop a reading period into the classroom.

I also want to integrate more funny activities and games. So the next topic is “toys” and I
was searching some funny ways of teaching this topic. I found the following game to the
warm – up period, I believe that it is funny and pupils may have a quick sight of the new
topic.
2. “Before the class, hide the following toys around the classroom (under chairs, in
bookshelves, etc.): teddy bear, doll, blocks, robot, puppet, book, ball, balloon. You can
also add some more toys to this list if you wish. Also, make sure you have printed the
same flashcards as the toys you have hidden. You will need at least one toy per
student (if you have a lot of students you can use multiple blocks, balls and balloons,
so that each student has at least one toy to find).
Have all of your students sit down. Give each one a toy flashcard and tell them that
hidden around the room are some toys which they have to find. Model the activity, by
showing one toy flashcard (e.g. a picture of a doll) - wander around the room looking in
different places until you have found a toy doll. Now, let everyone get up and search
around for their toy and then sit down again in their place with the toy. Once all the
toys have been found go around the class and have each student hold up the toy they
have found. For each toy say and chorus the toy word (e.g. Teacher: "a ball"; Students
"a ball"). You can play this game a few times but finish before your students start to
lose interest.” https://www.eslkidstuff.com/lesson-plans/toys.html
For the introduction stage I searched some videos and I found two interesting videos for
kids.

Then I believe to use some movements’ activities for practicing and to keep learning the
next class. So I believe that this moment is crucial to do not lose pupils’ interest. I was
thinking of a musical activity like that:
“Sit all of your students in a circle and place the toys in the center of the circle. Play
some music on your CD player and have students pass a ball or bean bag around the
circle. Stop the music. Say to the student holding the ball "Touch the teddy bear!" - and
the student does so. Start playing the music and do the same thing so that all of your
students have touched a toy.”
Or other like that:
“Have all of your students sit down. Start by holding up each toy and eliciting,
chorusing and passing the toy around (when passing make sure each student says the
word for the toy as they pass it).
Next put all of the toys in a box and have everyone close their eyes. Pull out a toy and
say "Open your eyes" - everyone must open their eyes and shout out the word for toy
that you are holding. Play this for all of the toys”
For the ending part I love this activity because it is very simple but pupils can review the
new Topic before they go home.
“Let's finish with a fun game which will review vocab from this lesson. Get everyone
sitting down and place all of the toys in front of you in a line. Say "Close your eyes".
Make sure everyone has their eyes closed and covered with their hands (model this so
3. everyone can see what to do). Quickly take a toy away from the line up and hide it
behind your back. Say "Open your eyes". Nod towards the space where a toy was and
say "What's missing?". Encourage the students to shout out the answer.”
The following pages are also interesting to teach toys vocabulary and so I will bear in mind
all the resources when I plan my following lessons.
