• Bajaj Auto Limited is an Indian motorised vehicle-producing company.
Bajaj Auto is a part of Bajaj Group. It was founded by Jamnalal
Bajaj at Rajasthan in the 1930s. It is based in Pune, Mumbai, with plants
in Chakan (Pune), Waluj (near Aurangabad) and Pantnagar in Uttarakhand.
The oldest plant at Akurdi (Pune) now houses the R&D centre Ahead. Bajaj
Auto makes and exports automobiles, scooters, motorcycles and auto
rickshaws.
• Bajaj Auto is the world's third-largest manufacturer of motorcycles and
the second-largest in India.
• The company has changed its image from a scooter manufacturer to a
two-wheeler manufacturer. Its product range encompasses scooterettes,
scooters and motorcycles. Its growth has come in the last four years after
successful introduction of models in the motorcycle segment.
5. Company History
• Bajaj Auto came into existence on 29 November 1945 as M/s Bachraj
Trading Corporation Private Limited. It started off by selling imported two-
and three-wheelers in India. In 1959, it obtained a license from
the government of India to manufacture two- and three-wheelers and it
went public in 1960. In 1970, it rolled out its 100,000th vehicle. In 1977, it
sold 100,000 vehicles in a financial year. In 1985, it started producing at
Waluj near Aurangabad. In 1986, it sold 500,000 vehicles in a financial
year. In 1995, it rolled out its ten millionth vehicle and produced and sold
one million vehicles in a year.
6. Products
• Bajaj has made motorcycles, scooters, auto-rickshaws and most recently,
cars. Bajaj Auto has the capacity to manufacture 400,000 three-wheelers
per year and it exports a major part of it. Motorcycles in production are
the XCD, Platina, Discover, Pulsar and Avenger. Bajaj also distributes
motorcycles in India for other manufacturers, such as the Kawasaki Ninja
250R, the Ninja 650R and new for 2013, the KTM Duke 200 and Duke 390.
Cars include the Bajaj ULC ultra-low-cost car.
17. Why in Profit?
• Bajaj Auto(BAJA.NS), India's second-largest motorcycle maker, reported a flat first-
quarter profit that matched expectations as its exports benefited from a weaker
rupee, offsetting sluggish sales volumes.
• The company posted a net profit of 7.38 billion rupees for the quarter that ended
in June compared with 7.18 billion rupees a year ago. Net sales rose 2 percent to
48.09 billion rupees.
• Analysts, on average, had expected a profit of 7.47 billion rupees on revenues of
48.65 billion rupees, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
• Export volumes, which account for about a third of total sales, fell about 13
percent in the quarter, but Bajaj reaped the benefits of a weak rupee that lost
nearly 9 percent against the U.S. dollar during the period.
• "Taking into account the current trend of the rupee vis-a-vis the U.S. dollar and the
current position of hedged contracts, a further benefit on account of depreciating
rupee would accrue to the company in the coming quarters," Bajaj said in a
statement.
