Oil spills may happen due to releases of crude oil
from tankers, drilling rigs and wells.
The term is usually given to marine oil spills, where oil is released
into the ocean or coastal waters, but spills may also occur on land.
Oil spills can contribute a lot towards pollution easily. Spills of gasoline,
diesel contribute significantly towards both air and water contamination

4. Why oil spills are a
serious concern?
These slicks
cause
widespread
destruction
on coastal
ecosystem
Many birds and
animal ingest oil
which can be
poison to them.
Floats on
the
surface of
water and
form slicks.
Oil is
hydrophobic.

10. โImpact on coastline
Perhaps the most visual part of an oil spill is the
harsh effects oil has on the coastline. Every
rock, piece of driftwood, saw grass, sand, soil
and microscopic habitat is destroyed or
affected by the thick oil that washes ashore
after a spill.

11. โImpact on Habitat
and Wildlife
Habitat destruction is all too obvious with
an oil spill. The most visible would be seen on
shore, but beneath the water there is a very
delicate balance in the reefs and shallow
water habitats. Plankton, producers at the
bottom of the food chain, are often killed by
oil spills as a result of changes to the water
and lack of sunlight beneath the oil slick.

13. Clean up and Recovery
Skimming:
Take a little off the top
Chemical Dispersants:
Break It Up
In Situ Burning:
Burn after oiling
Using sobrents:
Absorbs the oil
Oil booms:
Prevents oil from spreading
further
17. Deep water horizon was an industrial disaster that
began on april 20,2010 in the gulf of mexico.
Estimated 4.9 million barrels were discharged.
18. Ixtoc I was an explatory oil well being drilled in bay of campeche.
On 3 june 1979 , the well sufferred a blowout 140 million gallon oil was discharged.

21. Mauritius Oil Spill of 2020
How did it happen?
-The ship, MV Wakashio, ran
aground at Pointe d'Esny in
late July, and oil began leaking
-On 7 August, nearly two
weeks after the shipwreck, the
Mauritian government declared
the incident a national
emergency.
Why it was considered
a major environmental
threat?
-Mauritius is a biodiversity
hotspot with a high
concentration of plants and
animals unique to the region.
-The toxic hydrocarbons
released from spilled oil will
bleach the coral reefs and they
will eventually die.
The After effects
-Although the oil spill wasn't
large - just a few hundred
tonnes of oil - the damage to
the coral reefs there have
been massive.
