Every year, AppDirect explores the cloud service
commerce industry from a unique perspective.
Instead of focusing on end users, we evaluate how
the biggest companies in the U.S.—the Fortune
500—are influencing application distribution and
development.
This year, we decided to narrow our focus and take
a closer look at the top 100 companies on Fortune’s
annual list. Cloud services are clearly a priority for
these business leaders, but in ways you may not
expect. Read on to learn more about what we found.

Cloud Services and Marketplace Distribution
Have Become Must-Haves
Almost every company in the Fortune 100 offers
apps or cloud services of some kind, and of those
companies, all of them offer that software through
an online marketplace.
Third-Party Services
About one in five Fortune 100 companies
offer third-party cloud services, a number
that has held steady over the past few years.
However, of the companies that offer third-
party cloud services, far more companies
now offer SaaS apps, with a jump from 69%
last year to 81% today.

Innovators Offering Their Own Marketplaces
Many leading companies are taking their cloud
service distribution to the next level by operating
their own marketplaces. About 17% of Fortune 100

Creating a Powerful Connected
Cloud Service Ecosystem
More than a third of Fortune 100 companies offer
public APIs or a formal developer program to help
build and support app ecosystems that drive value
for companies and customers alike.
Selling Third-Party
Software
The centralized experience of a marketplace makes
it easy for customers to find, buy, and use software.
This is one big reason why 76% of the Fortune

Industry Insights
Apps and cloud services are well-established across
almost every industry in the Fortune 100.
Telco and automotive companies are leading the way
in offering third-party apps and cloud services, with
tech just slightly behind.
When it comes to marketplaces, however,
one industry clearly stands out. For the
third year in a row, telcos are the leading
operators of cloud service marketplaces.

ME THODOLOGY
For this report, AppDirect searched for cloud services and applications,
as well as application stores or marketplaces, related to or offered by
each company listed on the 2015 Fortune 500 list. Common search
tools included Google.com, popular marketplaces—including iTunes, the
App Store, and Google Play—and search engines on corporate websites.
Third-party cloud services or applications, whether mobile, SaaS, or
other, are those developed by third-party ISVs. If a company hires a
third-party to create an application (e.g., a mobile app development
studio) but then offers it under its own brand, it is not considered a
third-party product.
Mobile apps are those mainly consumed on mobile devices (e.g.,
smartphones, tablets, etc.); SaaS applications are mainly web-based,
generally offer usage tiers, and may be consumed on a subscription
basis. As used in the report, “other” apps fall outside of these two broad
categories.
For purposes of this report, to be considered a marketplace, an
application or cloud services store must offer a catalog of software
products as well as one or more functionalities that facilitate buying,
managing, or provisioning purchased products. For companies that offer
marketplaces, the marketplaces can be built in house, offered using a
third-party platform or tools, or some combination thereof.
Determinations regarding classifications, including which websites and/
or platforms qualify as marketplaces, as well as which software is a
cloud service or application, have been made solely by AppDirect.

This year, we decided to narrow our focus and take a closer look at the top 100 companies on Fortune’s annual list. Cloud services are clearly a priority for these business leaders, but in ways you may not expect. • 7. ME THODOLOGY For this report, AppDirect searched for cloud services and applications, as well as application stores or marketplaces, related to or offered by each company listed on the 2015 Fortune 500 list. Common search tools included Google.com, popular marketplaces—including iTunes, the App Store, and Google Play—and search engines on corporate websites. Third-party cloud services or applications, whether mobile, SaaS, or other, are those developed by third-party ISVs. If a company hires a third-party to create an application (e.g., a mobile app development studio) but then offers it under its own brand, it is not considered a third-party product. Mobile apps are those mainly consumed on mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, etc.); SaaS applications are mainly web-based, generally offer usage tiers, and may be consumed on a subscription basis. As used in the report, “other” apps fall outside of these two broad categories. For purposes of this report, to be considered a marketplace, an application or cloud services store must offer a catalog of software products as well as one or more functionalities that facilitate buying, managing, or provisioning purchased products. For companies that offer marketplaces, the marketplaces can be built in house, offered using a third-party platform or tools, or some combination thereof. Determinations regarding classifications, including which websites and/ or platforms qualify as marketplaces, as well as which software is a cloud service or application, have been made solely by AppDirect.
