Trends and Insights
These are some of the trends that we’re seeing that are currently and will in the future affect our clients and what they’re focusing on:
Digital Ecosystems
Portability and Mobility
Consumer Engagement across all touchpoints and personalization
These 3 trends and insights can spark new ideas to help your business innovate and grow in today’s competitive marketplace.
When companies think of open source, these days they think "business agility," a quality they increasingly value above all others in the fast-changing marketplace.
The digital era not only makes big bets possible but increasingly necessary. The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming a force that is driving innovation and new opportunities by bringing every object, consumer, and activity into the digital realm. At the same time, leading businesses are making similar changes within their enterprises by digitizing every employee, process, product, and service.
Pioneering companies have already realized the implications of tapping into a digital ecosystem. They see that in such digitally driven, hyper-connected times, they have the capacity for action beyond transforming themselves into digital businesses.
But becoming a digital business is no longer simply about incorporating these technologies into an organization—it’s about using digital technology to weave businesses into the broader digital fabric that extends to customers, partners, employees, and other industries.
The question for every enterprise is: what role will your company play in this next important stage of the digital revolution? Appnovation’s clients are now realizing this and we’re helping them get more and more into open technology integrated stacks- helping them work every piece of their technology into one to connect and scale up in extraordinary ways.
Portability and Mobility
According to Gartner Research, by 2016, use of mobile apps will surpass that of Internet domain names, making mobile apps the dominant means of engaging with brands.
Portability and mobility are among the foremost design concerns for not only computing and media devices, but the applications, services, content and data that they carry as well. User experience, integration and productivity rule the market, changing the way business is done on mobile applications
Mobile is evolving and growing quickly. As enterprise needs shift, there is an increasing convergence between traditional mobile device management, with mobile application management (MAM) and mobile content management (MCM) solutions.
From this we can see that mobility is in a state of constant change with new devices, apps and new innovations coming every day. Companies like Kobo, Reebok and Fox News trust Appnovation to deliver secure mobility solutions that help them deliver and achieve business results. With our track record of award winning and innovative mobility solutions, Appnovation’s clients stay ahead of the mobile game.
Storytelling is multidimensional. There are many variables to think about when crafting the digital version of anews story, such as: where is the consumer right now and what is she doing? Is she at home at work or in a new location? What types of content will be relevant for her, given a particular moment in time and her interests activities and location at that moment?
Marketers know the customer data is out there, but have yet to find a way to centralize it and make it actionable across the organization.
The companies that can centralize customer profiles across touchpoints, channels, devices will have the competitive advantage in the age of the always-addressable consumer. Forward-thinking businesses are changing the ways they build new applications, products, and services. To gain control over these points of access, they are creating highly personalized experiences that engage and exhilarate consumers—without breaching the customer’s trust. The companies that succeed in this new “Internet of Me” will become the next generation of household names.
Every experience is becoming a digital experience- simple, delightful and personal- the new frontier means something much more authentic and meaningful to the individual.
Partnering with Janrain has allowed us to give our clients the edge on building better, longer lasting relationships as your customers get the personalized interactions they want the most.
I’d now like to show some of our client work, starting with Time Inc.

Open source has emerged as the driving force of technology innovation, from cloud and big data to social media and mobile.
These following statistics are taken from The Future of Open Source Survey, sponsored by Black Duck and North Bridge, that Appnovation was a Platinum Contributor of, is an annual assessment of open source industry trends that drives broad industry discussion around key issues for new and established software-related organizations and the open source community.
Appnovation, along with several other services and technologies companies, collaborated with North Bridge and Black Duck to drive participation in taking the survey.
Let’s now take a look and what these stats are telling us about the open source landscape, its proliferation and adoption by enterprise level entities.
Adoption of open source in the enterprise has grown tremendously.
78% of companies run on open source
In just the last 5 years, more and more business IT environments are running on them now.
More and more buyers look at open source options before proprietary and many consider open source to be the default approach for software.
More and more organizations are gaining a competitive advantage.
When compared to proprietary options, open source is meeting the challenge in terms of providing better competitive features, ease of deployment and ability to scale.
All in all the future of open source is looking better and better across such notable fronts at Quality, Ease of Use, Security and Ease to Deploy.
Its those statistics that now lead to what businesses care about most, improving margins and growing revenues, and from this most recent survey, open source is doing both.
Even more promising and future telling is that open source is sparking the speed of innovation. So not only allowing for innovation to happen, but allowing it to happen much faster.
But even in the face of all what this survey has told us, positive news on adoption, quality and perception, I am here today to tell you that open source should no longer be the fundamental characteristic that enterprises look for when deciding to go with a new software, system or platform to adopt.
This assertion is also flying in the face of the fact that I founded Appnovation 7+ years ago on being a leader in open source solutions development and what up until a few months ago we as a company had solely recommended to our current and prospective clients as the way to go.
Today, we believe that more important of the technology platform and software system is no longer that it has to be "open source", but instead an "open technology", able to integrate and be customized as the enterprise needs and/or desires.
As companies like Microsoft and IBM release more code to the public, opening their products and platforms and most of the companies here on this panel today offer a premium commercial version of their open source technology specifically tailored to the enterprise needs, the key attribute we have seen the need for across all our clients in every industry is the ability connect and customize, and therefore we at Appnovation, are moving away from purely open source based solutions, to open technology-based solutions.
This isn’t to say we are completely moving away from open source, far from it. Instead we are now opening our eyes and in addition to open source also embracing those platforms and systems that are open technology-based, thus enabling Appnovation to build what we consider to be open solutions.
Thank you to everyone here today. We’re excited about the future of our company and the future of open technologies and the solutions that can be built with them. There has clearly been a big change in the way enterprises look at open technologies; it has truly become a crucial element in the development of new, innovative solutions.
