2. HISTORY
•In 1895, William G. Morgan, an
instructor at the Young Men's
Christian Association (YMCA) in
Holyoke, Mass. Morgan created the
game of volleyball, at that time called
Mintonette.

States in 1895 as a blend of
basketball, baseball, tennis, and

•Mintonette was designed to be an indoor sport.
Mintonette was less rough than basketball for
older members of the YMCA, while still
requiring some athletic ability. The first rules
required for a net to be 6 feet 6 inches (1.98
meters) high, a 25 × 50 foot (7.6 × 15.2 meter)
court. Each team could have as many players
as a team wanted. In case of a miss serve, a
second try was allowed. Hitting the ball into
the net was a fault, with loss of the point or a
side-out, except in the case of a first serve
4. OBJECT OF THE GAME
•The object of the game is to WIN THE MATCH.
Match A match is won by the first team to win
3 out of 5 games. As soon as a team wins 3
games, the match is over. Game A game is
played to 25 points, the first team gets to 25
wins. Games must be won by at least 2 points.
So, if there is a tie, the game shall be played
until one team has a two point lead. If the
match goes to a 5th game, the game is played
to 15 points. Point A point is scored by a team
every time the opponent commits a fault. A

EQUIPMENT
•The net is 1 meter (3 ft.) and 9.5 meters
(32 ft.) long when stretched. Net Antennas
are attached to the net inline with the
outside edge of the sideline. Referee Stand
The volleyball game rules require the
referee stand to be a stable platform that
elevates the volleyball referees head to
about 2 or 3 feet above the top of the net.

7. VOLLEYBALL EQUIPMENT
•The Ball The volleyball must be
spherical. The circumference is
between 65 to 67 cm and weigh
between 260 to 280 grams.

RETURN THE BALL
•The typical sequence of hits is pass, set,
spike (or attack). Sometimes the ball
can be blocked instead.
11. FOREARM PASS and
OVERHEAD PASS
•FOREARM PASS you have to use for forearms.
You have to move towards the ball and flex your
legs. Your arms should be extended and your
hands intertwined. At the moment of hitting,
extend your legs and follow the movement with
the inclination of the trunk forward.
•OVERHEAD PASS you have to flex your legs, place
below the ball and hit it in front of your face. You
must hit the ball with your hand, while you’re
extending your arms and legs. The fingers are the
latest to hit the ball.
