A
HISTORY OF
VOLLEYBALL
HISTORY
•In 1895, William G. Morgan, an
instructor at the Young Men's
Christian Association (YMCA) in
Holyoke, Mass. Morgan created the
game of volleyball, at that time called
Mintonette.
•Volleyball originated in the United
States in 1895 as a blend of
basketball, baseball, tennis, and
ORIGIN
•Mintonette was designed to be an indoor sport.
Mintonette was less rough than basketball for
older members of the YMCA, while still
requiring some athletic ability. The first rules
required for a net to be 6 feet 6 inches (1.98
meters) high, a 25 × 50 foot (7.6 × 15.2 meter)
court. Each team could have as many players
as a team wanted. In case of a miss serve, a
second try was allowed. Hitting the ball into
the net was a fault, with loss of the point or a
side-out, except in the case of a first serve
OBJECT OF THE GAME
•The object of the game is to WIN THE MATCH.
Match A match is won by the first team to win
3 out of 5 games. As soon as a team wins 3
games, the match is over. Game A game is
played to 25 points, the first team gets to 25
wins. Games must be won by at least 2 points.
So, if there is a tie, the game shall be played
until one team has a two point lead. If the
match goes to a 5th game, the game is played
to 15 points. Point A point is scored by a team
every time the opponent commits a fault. A
COURT
•The Center Line The center line
extends from sideline to sideline
underneath the net. The center
line separates the courts playing
area into two equal halves, each
30 by 30 feet. Serving Area The
serving area is the area behind
the end line where the server
VOLLEYBALL
EQUIPMENT
•The net is 1 meter (3 ft.) and 9.5 meters

referee stand to be a stable platform that
elevates the volleyball referees head to
about 2 or 3 feet above the top of the net.
•The net height for men is 2.43 meters
•The net height for women is 2.24 meters
