8. Is Quantum Computing the New Arms Race?
8
“Let’s make no mistake: the competition for a quantum computing is the new
arms race. The competition to create the first large-scale quantum computer is
heating up. The country that develops one first will have the ability to cripple
militaries and topple the global economy…To deter such activity, and to ensure
our security, the United States must win this new race to the quantum-computer
revolution”
(U.S. National Review, 2017)

9. Quantum Computing
❑ Quantum computers rely on naturally occurring quantum-
mechanical phenomena — basically two important states of
matter known as superposition and entanglement. These
states of matter, when harnessed for computing purposes, can
speed up the ability to perform computations on complex sets
of data.
❑ The important distinction here is that quantum computers are
different from traditional computers, which are transistor based
binary digital computers.
❑ A quantum computer works with particles that can be in
superposition. Rather than representing bits, such particles
which replace transistors represent qubits, which can take on
the value 0, or 1, or both simultaneously.
❑ Each qubit can be entangled with the other qubits in the QC.
The intertwining of quantum “states” exponentially increases
the number of 0s and 1s that can be simultaneously
processed by an array of qubits.
❑ Quantum computers can deal with exponentially greater levels
of complexity than the most powerful super computer.

10. Quantum Computing Race
10
Problems that would take a super-computer the age of our universe to solve,
can, in theory, be solved by a universal quantum computer in days or hours.

“Quantum computing has the potential to revolutionize the entire IT sector
and, in turn, all other areas of industry. This technology is as yet still in the
early stage ……but it harbors vast potential.”

13. Quantum Communication & Quantum Internet
13
▪ Quantum communication involves
generation and use of quantum states and
resources for communication protocols.
▪ Typically, these protocols are built on
quantum random number generators
(QRNG) for secret keys and quantum key
distribution (QKD) for their secure
distribution.
▪ Its main applications are in secure
communication, long-term secure storage,
cloud computing and other cryptography-
related tasks,
▪ Secure “quantum web” distributing
quantum resources like entanglement and
connecting remote devices and systems.

14. Quantum Communication & Quantum Internet
14
The Chinese Micius satellite quantum-
encrypted link between China and
Austria
▪ The Internet is vulnerable to eavesdropping;
Quantum encryption can make that
impossible
▪ China already has quantum communication
in place with their 2,000 km fiber optic
network between Beijing to Shanghai
▪ Furthermore, the Chinese satellite Micius
sent quantum-encrypted data between
China and Austria, a step closer to a global
quantum internet
▪ Quantum communication over satellite is
much more promising and efficient than the
land-based option

15. Quantum Sensors
Examples:
❑ Quantum Gravity
sensors
❑ Electromagnetic field
sensors
❑ Magnetic Sensors
❑ Quantum chips for:
▪ Accelerometry,
▪ Gyroscopes,
▪ Timekeeping
15
A quantum sensor is a device that exploits quantum correlations to achieve a sensitivity that
is better by a factor of up to 100000 vs. classical sensors

16. In Closing….
❑ The 4th Industrial Revolution is gathering steam. Unless you overhaul your
enterprise, earmark substantial funding and assign the best and brightest talents,
while also educating your workforce suited to the new jobs to come, this time it
might be the decay of your business.
❑ The enormous potential of quantum computing is undeniable, and the hardware
needed to harness it is advancing fast.
❑ If there were ever a perfect time to bend your brain around quantum computing,
it’s now.
