Rotary will complete 109 years of service to mankind. February is aptly designated as “World Understanding Month”. I am happy to note that our clubs are joining hands with other clubs in various zones of our District to celebrate this event jointly by creating awareness and related projects. In my opinion, World Understanding starts from our doorsteps. If everyone can love and respect our family members first, and our neighbors and people in our surroundings and society, the place where we live will become heaven. 2. 2. 2 RI President's Message - February 2014 Itwas109yearsagothismonththatPaulHarrisandthreeofhisfriendsfoundedthefirstRotaryclub.Hisgoalwas simple:tocreateanoasisoffriendshipamidacityofstrangers, withthosewhosharedhisvalues Over time, the philosophy of Rotary developed and matured, and Rotarian ideals expanded to include service, vocational ethics, and international understanding. As Rotary grew and spread, Paul Harris envisioned a world in whichconflictwouldultimatelymeltaway–aworldwherepersonalconnectionsandacceptanceofdifferenceswouldrelegatewar to history. If people could only come together in a spiritof friendship and tolerance,he felt, they would soon realize howmuch they hadincommon. Paul Harris was fortunate in his lifetime to see the Rotary idea take hold and establish itself in dozens of countries around the world. Every week, in 34,000 communities, his vision lives on in every Rotary club meeting. But nowhere in the world does Paul Harris'visiontakelifeasvividlyasitdoesatourannualRotaryInternationalconvention. At a convention, for a few short days, we see the world as Paul Harris imagined it: a world where men and women from every corner of the globe come together, to build peace, to serve others, and simply to enjoy one another's company. Differences of background, politics, culture, and religion are woven together, all part of one bright tapestry. It is an unforgettable experience, one thatJettaandIlookforwardtoeveryyear.Everyconventionisdifferent,andeveryonebecomesamemorythatwecherish. This year, I will have the tremendous privilege of presiding over the 105th Rotary International Convention in Sydney, 1-4 June. Sydney is a vibrant international hub, a gateway between East and West, and a wonderfully appropriate city to host a Rotary convention. It is tremendously diverse, rich in culture and history, and one of my favorite cities to visit; at once exciting and relaxed, itisaplacewhereIknowIwillalwaysfeelathome–andalwaysfindsomethingnewtoseeanddo. In 2014, Rotary members will gather to say G'day from Sydney. We will come together as friends and Rotarians, to reach out to the world and to one another, in an environment where all are welcome. I hope you will join us as we celebrate our successes, look to the future, and discover new ways to Engage Rotary, Change Lives. ASSISTANT GOVERNOR'S MESSAGE Dear Friends in Rotary, As Rotarians, we have the onerous responsibility of making the dreams of Rotary come true. Even as the intentions are clear, much of it depends upon the Rotarians' ability to execute the projects at club level. It is heartening to note that almost all the clubs have gone into projects during the year on strengthening literacy, ending of Polio and other dreaded diseases, supporting community development programs, etc. While some clubs excelled in variety, many more were busy with the intensity of their projects. Now it is time for all the clubs to take stock of their activities and achievements over the year, as Rotary is evaluated by our activities in Community Service. Concentrate on the areas which remain unfulfilled and on such other thrust areas for the remaining months of the year. Instead of treading the beaten path, exercising creative and original methods to realize Rotary goals ought to be encouraged and implemented with a new vigor and collective participation. With the experience gained over the period and with cooperation, motivation, and zeal, let us all join hands, Engage Rotary and change the society we live in and make our RI President's dream theme of “Engage Rotary and Change Lives” come true. The dictum that never fails to work is: "No matter how good your intention is, people see your presentation. No matter how good your presentation is, God sees your intention." Let us in Rotary do justice to both - intention and presentation. Rtn. B. N. Ramesh Assistant Governor Zone-9 Ron D. Burton President, Rotary International Dear fellow Rotarians, On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Rotary, here are a few simplethoughtstomullover. Inourmeetings, therecouldbeinteractivesessions rather than speeches. This would lead to more involvement and participation, and more lively collaboration. Let individual members express themselves and participate in Rotary in their own way – in any area of focus or avenue of service – as the case may be. We can have more joint sessions with Rotarians of other clubs. We can have regular mentoring sessions with our youngsters – annetts, rotaractors, interactors – so that they identify their career goals and take firm initial steps. They are all potential Rotarians. Based on our local culture, ecosystem and requirements, our projects can have their own area of focus. We can improve the image of Rotary further, by highlighting the projects through differentmediaandwordofmouth. The Rotary Wheel is a symbol of progress. Let us growwithRotaryandtogetherscalegreaterheights. Arun B.R. District Editor RID 3180 Editor's Take
  3. 3. 3 On February 23, Rotarians all over the th world celebrate the 109 birthday of Rotary and renew their commitment to Service above Self. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ROTARY! “LIGHT UP ROTARY”, says RI President-elect Huang RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was inspired by the teachings of ChinesephilosopherConfuciouswhosaid:"Itisbettertolightasinglecandle, thantositandcursethedarkness." "There are so many problems in the world, so many people who need help. Many people say, 'There's nothing I can do.' So they sit there doing nothing. Meanwhile everything stays dark," Huang told the 537 district governors and their spouses and partnerswhoareattendingthe2014InternationalAssemblyinSanDiego,California. "The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one.Together,welightuptheworld,"saidHuang,whoisamemberoftheRotaryClubofTaipeiinTaiwan. After announcing his theme at the opening session of the five-day training meeting, Huang urged club members to Light Up Rotary in the coming year by hosting a Rotary Day in their community and including local Rotaract and Interact members in their serviceprojects. "HowyouLightUpRotaryisuptoyou,"Huangsaid."Youknowwhereyouarestrong, youknowwhatyourcommunityneeds, andyouknowhowyoucanhelp." Huang also shared his membership development goals, including the need for more women and young adults and his goal to increase membership to a total of 1.3 million members. He asked Rotarians to invite their spouses, family members, and friends tojoinRotary. "Weneedtoassumeleadershipforbuildingstrongclubs, andthatstartswithbringinginnewmembers,"hesaid. Addressing the status of the fight against polio, Huang noted that with the current momentum Rotary is on track to achieve full polio eradication by 2018. "When we eradicate polio — and we will — we will have proved ourselves an organization capable of great things. And we'll be even better equipped for the next challenge we choose to take on. We'll have given the world a gift thatwillendureforever,"hesaid. By continuing to fight against polio, setting an example in local communities, and growing membership, Huang hopes to see Rotaryshinebrighterthanever. “Light Up Rotary is our theme, but it is more than our theme. It is how we live in Rotary, how we think in Rotary, how we feel, howwework,"Huangsaid."Itishowwemakeadifference—everyday, ineveryclub, everydistrict, andeverycountrywherewe serve."
