1. Task Brief
• Main task: Students to produce the front page,
contents page and double page spread of a new
music magazine.
• (Photoshop will be used for image manipulation
and Indesign will be used for page layout and
design features on contents page and article)
• All images and text used must be original,
produced by the candidate, minimum of FOUR
images per candidate.
3. All of these 3 music magazines covers have a simple layout which include a range of different things like:
• They all contain a main shot showing who the magazine includes a section on or has a link to inside
• The first 2 covers are medium close ups, showing the face and part of their shoulders, this is used to
highlight the emotion on their face and to make a direct link to the viewer with the direct eye contact
• The final magazine is a long shot of a female, however although this mean more background space
then, the pose she is doing means she is more involved in her environment
• They all have a masthead at the top of page so it is clear to the viewer straight away what the
magazine is called and recognised straight away
• There are also a few cover lines added to give an idea to the reader what the magazine contains and
the type of information they will find inside, these should grab the reader attention and make them
what to read more in interest
4. All of these 3 music magazines covers use images of males for the main photo:
• All three magazines are similar in the fact they use males on the front cover but the purpose they are
used and the effect they give to the viewer are very different
• The 1st and 2nd covers use the image of the male in a way which can attract both gendered viewers,
this is because the images are face on making a direct link to the person looking at the cover, however
they have a hard and motionless facial expression meaning it is neither happy, flirty or too dark so
anyone would be willing to pick up the magazine as it has an open target audience
• The third cover includes a 3group shot of males but the idea of this cover is to be happy, flirty and
seem attractive to the viewer, this is shown by how the three males are close together and smiling
directly to the character so they look friendly. This magazines target audience is young girls and it
reaches its aim as when the main shot is added with the other girly colours, pictures and shapes on
the cover, they create a cheerful and eye-catching display.
6. Analysing Content Pages
These 3 contents page are my favourite:
• The first page has a solid structure to it and it is clearly noticeable where you can find
out all the information you wish, whether it the band index on the left hand side, where
to find more about the main article on the Arctic Monkeys, or and other parts to the
magazine in their sections on the right side of the page.
• The thing I find best about the second content page is the use of the columns and how
the information is organised using the rule of thirds by putting the main points at the
top and to the left.
• I like how on the third page they have included the main article image into the
background and linked the logo into it as well.
8. Analysing Centre Pages
I find these two centre pages very striking to the eye an would be of interest to the viewer
• The first page uses a many images put together an edited to create a black and white
patterned picture as the background then a bold, larger coloured photo in front which then
creates a link to the text so the page is not in too many columns of sections but covers the
page in an attractive displayed layout.
• The second centre page focuses more in the text to create a mysterious and edgy feel to
the piece and make the viewer focus on the words placed within the word effect. This is
then placed next to a complimenting image of the artist who has clearly made the quote
which will be giving in context further on in the relating interview under neither.
