Hi, I want to show you something today that I hope will get you excited about science and how much fun it can be.Hands up anyone who has heard of the Bloodhound project based here in Bristol?It is a project to develop a car to not just break, but shatter the land speed record as we shall see shortly. It is also a project to promote science in schools and colleges by showing some of the amazing things that have to be done by scientists and engineers to overcome many complex challenging problems.
It all started over 100 years ago with electric and then steam powered cars.
So now to the land speed recordThis is Bloodhound SSC - itis a car. ? What do you think SSC stands for? Super sonic carIt is designed to break the world land speed record - be the fastest car on the planet.Design nearly finalized, lower chassis being built in February 2011 First runs start of next year. Aim, go at 1000 miles an hour by 2012.F1 go 220 or so. Bloodhound SSC aiming for 1000.
Breaking the sound barrier means travelling faster than sound can go in air. This means you compress the air which gives the sonic boom.
You have all swung round a top or something similar on the end of a string and felt that the faster you swing it the more pull there is on the string. Well these wheels are spinning so fast that they try to burst apart with a force 50 thousand times that of the force of gravity keeping you on the groupd!
So lets see how the jest and rockets helped the record attempt
Ask for suggestions – how do airplanes slow down before landing?Parachute increases the resistance on the car from air in the same way as air brakes. Why are parachutes only good for slow speeds? Why disc brakes even slower?
Bloodhound uses all 3 methods to stop.
