1. Locate the code reader receptacle under the dash. This is the connection to your
car’s computer. It’s usually under the dash on the driver’s side under the steering
wheel.

2. Plug the end of the code reader’s cable into the receptacle. As soon as you plug it in,
it will turn on automatically and try to read the car’s status. The code reader’s display
will display the word, Read.

3. Turn the ignition on to accessory power. Don’t crank the engine. Accessory power is
the when you turn the key in the ignition to the notch where the radio is on and the
seatbelt chime starts ringing. You must turn on the power within 10 or 15 seconds of
connecting the code reader or the code reader will display ERROR and after a few
seconds, repeat the cycle of trying to read the car’s status again
4. After you turn the ignition switch to accessory power, the code reader will read
whatever code your car’s computer is sending. In the case of the picture at left, only
the numerical error code is displayed. The owner would then need to refer to the
instruction manual that came with the code reader in order to determine what the
code represented. For the purpose of this tutorial, we’re assuming that we already
know that the code represents something that isn’t critical and all we want to do is
turn off the check engine light.
5. Press the Erase button twice. Check engine light is off. Disconnect code reader and
turn off ignition. You just saved yourself at least $50 by doing it yourself!
