On Being Professional
By
Jayadeva de Silva
Every one of us wants to be professional in their work but how many of them
actually work their way out to become professional. Professionalism is not in one’s
attire, position but it eventually undermines how coherently you take up your work,
understand the work, delegate the work, customize the work, and bring the work to
the logical completion with the employees in your organization. The practices
discussed have to be inculcated, understood, and practiced on a day to day basis in
order to be a professional. Professionalism is in the being & in no way related to the
trappings of the external thing.
1. The world needs more people who will do what is right just because it’s right.
If you consistently do what is right, you will gain a strong, positive
reputation, both personally and professionally.
2. Although we consider criticism to be negative, it can actually be a positive
force in helping us improve ourselves. No matter how positive people try to
be, criticism hurts. It requires a lot of courage & mental toughness to take
some of the sting out of criticism.
3. Are you content to scratch in the dirt, or would you rather soar in the sky?
Motivation begins in your mind. Find something to get excited about. Propel
your inner generator ignited at all times in spite of all odds. You need to have
a purpose, get yourself immersed in your purpose, move in the direction of
purpose, never get distracted from the purpose, and devote all your energy,
initiative & enthusiasm towards the purpose.
4. Work at becoming the kind of person others want to be around.
Remembering people’s names, learning to be relaxed & easy-going person,
not being egotistical, being interested in people, being gracious, polite,
tactful, shrugging of grievances & overlooking faults, boosting other people
all the times, developing spiritual depth so you have something to pass on to
others.
5. If you treat other people the way you would like to be treated yourself, you
end up making a better profit. No one will question your ethics but you need
to be ethically right. Good ethics makes good business sense. Tad Tuleja,
author of Beyond the Bottom Line, maintains that companies which do right
ethically also tend to do well financially.
6. Science teaches that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Understand the universal truths about cause and effect relationships which
will not only be valuable but will also mold you in to a better human being.
Be generous, enthusiastic, interested, more caring, more serving, more
outgoing, more persistent, more grateful, more forgiving, more prayerful,
more curious, more trusting, more patient, more considerate and more
cheerful. Plant these seeds to reap rich harvest.
7. Reading proverbs is good; reading them and applying them to your life is
better. Spend some time studying and understanding the book of Proverbs. It
can provide a great insight which will start you, and keep you, moving in the
right direction.
8. Too many of us don’t try, to change anything. Serenity, courage, and wisdom
are the three things we could all use more of. Serenity is a wonderful way to
live – calm, quiet, tranquil, peaceful. Too many of us don’t try to change
anything but have the courage to change the things you can. Wisdom is
knowledge, insight, judgment, good sense, and prudence. It often takes a
great deal of wisdom to decide whether something should be accepted or
changed, whether you can do something about it, or you can’t.
9. Some of the happiest people are those who are so busy giving to others that
they never have time to fret about their own problems. If you’d really like to
feel good about yourself, try helping someone else. You can help your
subordinate, colleague, superiors in your place of work irrespective of the
designation / status you hold in the organization.
10. It isn’t just fame and fortune that separates the super-successful from the
rest of us. They exhibit certain attributes and if you emulate those traits, you
are on the path of being successful. They like their vocation and prefer work
to hobbies. They are socially outgoing, extremely optimistic and practical.
They take care of their health, concentrate well and draw on intuition as well
as rational information when making decisions. They believe in
acquaintances and build them slowly and steadily. They don’t get bogged
down by details, but strive to see a larger picture to achieve big results.
11. A good attitude can make a good job. A poor attitude can turn even the best
job sour. In almost any job there is usually an element of excitement
involved; whether or not we find that excitement depends on our attitude.
Your job can be wonderful or miserable & it is all in your attitude.
12. Changing what you say to yourself can help you become a better person.
Whether you think of yourself as a winner or a loser helps determine what
actually happens to you. You tend to act in ways that are consistent with
what you believe about yourself. In other words, what you say to yourself,
over and over, helps make you the person you are. Changing what you say to
yourself can help you become a better person.
13. Quitters never make it to the winner’s circle. Life is and can be tough.
Sooner or later we all get discouraged and feel like quitting. It can be
difficult to keep going when nothing seems to be working out right. Don’t
quit. Quitters never make it to the winner’s circle. Hang in there.
14. It is not the big things that get us; it is the little things. An all-time great Sales
Trainer, stated “Spectacular performance must always be preceded by
unspectacular preparation.” The devils are in the details. Forget about the
elephants and pay more attention to the mosquitoes!
15. You will seldom hear criticism for being able to make your point quickly.
Getting to the point is a one of the most valuable skill in business. You will
seldom hear criticism for being able to make your point quickly. Most
complaints are about people who take forever to tell you what they have to
say.
16. Maintaining good mental health requires regular breaks from your normal
routine. Sometimes you can’t change your job, but you can find something
challenging to do in your leisure hours. If your job is primarily intellectual,
then do something physical and vice-versa.
17. “The job isn’t finished until the tools are put away.” Many of us are like this.
We’re “95 – per centers.” We go full force on something and then run out of
steam for one reason or another. It usually happens when the end is in sight,
when we know we can easily finish. The results are poor performance,
criticism, and missed deadlines. We also feel guilty and frustrated. For better
results don’t let up. Keep going until you’re finished. 95 per cent isn’t good
enough.
18. Walk, talk and confidently, and you will soon feel more confident, too.
Confidence is a skill and if you want to develop confidence you need to
deliberately learn, act and practice this skill. The more you learn, the more
confidence you become.
19. We would be a lot better off if we would choose a positive response when
things go wrong. Things will go wrong, no matter what. That is just the way
life is. And when they do, we will have some kind of response. Unfortunately,
our response is usually a negative one. When things go wrong we should take
the initiative to make things right. Don’t wait for the other person; make the
first move yourself, even if it is not your fault.
20. Being polite costs nothing, but it pays great dividends. Have you ever thought
or imagined about how much nicer the world would be if you were always
polite to the people you meet? Being polite to others says a lot of oneself.
21. Remember your rights – fairness, self control, and communication. Please
understand your three basic rights. You have the right to be treated fairly.
You have the right to stay in control of yourself. You have the right to get
your message across – correctly.
22. Take an inventory of yourself once a year. It is a good idea to pause, think
and take a thorough look at yourself. Regularly assessing yourself in terms of
learning about people, building relationships, facing and handling challenges,
improving self-discipline & building on it will guarantee consistent personal
growth.
23. Remember two rules for good relationships. Think before you speak. When
you forget or ignore, apologize quickly. What will it take to be successful in
future? Continual success is never guaranteed. The moment you begin to rest
on your laurels is the time to start worrying. Just when you think you have
got it made, it can easily fall apart.
24. One aspect of wisdom is knowing the difference between statements of facts
and statements of inference. When we know the difference, we’ll stop
jumping to conclusions or presuming to have knowledge we simply do not
possess.
25. Garbage in, garbage out. Remember, your mind is like a computer, only
more complex and advanced. Input, output. What goes in is what comes out.
Control your input, and your output will take care of itself.
26. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Robert Schuller
said: “Yard by yard, life is hard; but inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” Break your
challenge into small manageable steps and always focus on the next step. You
will be surprised at how much you can accomplish – one step at a time.
27. Don’t act like you feel; act the way you want to feel. If you feel depressed, act
as if you’re happy. If you feel like sighing, laugh instead. Believe it or not,
pretending is good for you. The more you act like you’re happy, confident
and relaxed, the more you’ll feel like you’re happy, confident, and relaxed. In
other words, your actions can change your feelings.
28. “The great enemy of understanding is imprecise language.” Mark Twain
pointed out, “The difference between the right word and the almost right
word is like the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” Learn
new word everyday. Look up words to check their precise meaning. Improve
your vocabulary, and you will improve your understanding at the same time.
29. Upset, angry, and hostile customers are simply a fact of life. Approach
hostility confidently. Don’t shrink back in fear. Anger is the normal
expression, and entirely appropriate in some situations. Just be ready to
handle it.
30. Words are powerful, and how you use them either harnesses that power for
you or unleashes it against you. Remember, the right word with the right
emphasis at the right time has enormous power. Your emphasis makes all the
difference.
31. The not-so-wise try to control others, while the wise persuade. To persuade,
rather than control, experts suggest emphasizing the strong points, offering
additional incentives, or stimulating their thinking. Thinking about what the
other person might want and tie that reward to your request. Consider their
personality. Some people will respond to a challenge, while others want an
assurance of security.
32. Risk is a part of life. The majority of the risks we face are social risks. We’re
afraid of looking foolish, being wrong, or feeling rejected. When these things
happen, they hurt; to avoid potential pain, we play it safe and don’t take
chances. If we wish to succeed at anything, however, we can’t play it safe all
the time. We must learn to take risks, whether we like it or not. It would
help, then, if we could learn to face risk positively.
33. There are several things you can do to hasten the switch to a good mood.
Everyone has a bad mood now and then; they are simply a part of life.
Sooner or later, the bad mood passes away and life is back to normal.
34. When we choose our habits we also choose the results that come with those
habits. To break out of your rut, you must break your normal habit patterns
and do something different. Become unpredictable. Life is a banquet, and
some poor folks are starving to death.
35. Anxiety, coupled with inactivity, breeds even more anxiety. You can reduce
your anxiety by admitting you lack knowledge, refusing to let the show-offs
intimate you, and striving continually to learn something new.
36. Managers are being paid to get results, not to be perfect. Becoming less
perfect may be difficult and take some time, but it is worth the effort. Living
free from perfectionism will allow you to enjoy life and accomplish much
more. You can be very good at your job without being perfect. Human beings
are imperfect and you should know how to deal with imperfect people.
37. Whether or not others like us is largely up to us. It depends on what we do
and how we get along with others. Many of us are not getting along with
others as well as we like to pretend. Greet people as soon as you see them.
Don’t wait for them to greet you first. Call them by their first name. Give
them the impression that you are genuinely happy to see them. Just see how
your likeability quotient goes up.
38. In the entire universe, there is only one you. The stronger your self-esteem,
the better your life. Eight steps to help you to strengthen your self-esteem.
 Accept yourself.
 Improve your inner self.
 Tap your inner joy.
 Be positive about yourself.
 Forget about perfection.
 Take a chance.
 Learn from others.
 In the entire universe, there is only one you. Celebrate your uniqueness!

On being Professional by Jayadeva de Silva

  • 1. On Being Professional By Jayadeva de Silva Every one of us wants to be professional in their work but how many of them actually work their way out to become professional. Professionalism is not in one’s attire, position but it eventually undermines how coherently you take up your work, understand the work, delegate the work, customize the work, and bring the work to the logical completion with the employees in your organization. The practices discussed have to be inculcated, understood, and practiced on a day to day basis in order to be a professional. Professionalism is in the being & in no way related to the trappings of the external thing. 1. The world needs more people who will do what is right just because it’s right. If you consistently do what is right, you will gain a strong, positive reputation, both personally and professionally. 2. Although we consider criticism to be negative, it can actually be a positive force in helping us improve ourselves. No matter how positive people try to
  • 2. be, criticism hurts. It requires a lot of courage & mental toughness to take some of the sting out of criticism. 3. Are you content to scratch in the dirt, or would you rather soar in the sky? Motivation begins in your mind. Find something to get excited about. Propel your inner generator ignited at all times in spite of all odds. You need to have a purpose, get yourself immersed in your purpose, move in the direction of purpose, never get distracted from the purpose, and devote all your energy, initiative & enthusiasm towards the purpose. 4. Work at becoming the kind of person others want to be around. Remembering people’s names, learning to be relaxed & easy-going person, not being egotistical, being interested in people, being gracious, polite, tactful, shrugging of grievances & overlooking faults, boosting other people all the times, developing spiritual depth so you have something to pass on to others. 5. If you treat other people the way you would like to be treated yourself, you end up making a better profit. No one will question your ethics but you need to be ethically right. Good ethics makes good business sense. Tad Tuleja, author of Beyond the Bottom Line, maintains that companies which do right ethically also tend to do well financially. 6. Science teaches that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Understand the universal truths about cause and effect relationships which will not only be valuable but will also mold you in to a better human being. Be generous, enthusiastic, interested, more caring, more serving, more outgoing, more persistent, more grateful, more forgiving, more prayerful, more curious, more trusting, more patient, more considerate and more cheerful. Plant these seeds to reap rich harvest. 7. Reading proverbs is good; reading them and applying them to your life is better. Spend some time studying and understanding the book of Proverbs. It can provide a great insight which will start you, and keep you, moving in the right direction. 8. Too many of us don’t try, to change anything. Serenity, courage, and wisdom are the three things we could all use more of. Serenity is a wonderful way to live – calm, quiet, tranquil, peaceful. Too many of us don’t try to change anything but have the courage to change the things you can. Wisdom is
  • 3. knowledge, insight, judgment, good sense, and prudence. It often takes a great deal of wisdom to decide whether something should be accepted or changed, whether you can do something about it, or you can’t. 9. Some of the happiest people are those who are so busy giving to others that they never have time to fret about their own problems. If you’d really like to feel good about yourself, try helping someone else. You can help your subordinate, colleague, superiors in your place of work irrespective of the designation / status you hold in the organization. 10. It isn’t just fame and fortune that separates the super-successful from the rest of us. They exhibit certain attributes and if you emulate those traits, you are on the path of being successful. They like their vocation and prefer work to hobbies. They are socially outgoing, extremely optimistic and practical. They take care of their health, concentrate well and draw on intuition as well as rational information when making decisions. They believe in acquaintances and build them slowly and steadily. They don’t get bogged down by details, but strive to see a larger picture to achieve big results. 11. A good attitude can make a good job. A poor attitude can turn even the best job sour. In almost any job there is usually an element of excitement involved; whether or not we find that excitement depends on our attitude. Your job can be wonderful or miserable & it is all in your attitude. 12. Changing what you say to yourself can help you become a better person. Whether you think of yourself as a winner or a loser helps determine what actually happens to you. You tend to act in ways that are consistent with what you believe about yourself. In other words, what you say to yourself, over and over, helps make you the person you are. Changing what you say to yourself can help you become a better person. 13. Quitters never make it to the winner’s circle. Life is and can be tough. Sooner or later we all get discouraged and feel like quitting. It can be difficult to keep going when nothing seems to be working out right. Don’t quit. Quitters never make it to the winner’s circle. Hang in there. 14. It is not the big things that get us; it is the little things. An all-time great Sales Trainer, stated “Spectacular performance must always be preceded by unspectacular preparation.” The devils are in the details. Forget about the elephants and pay more attention to the mosquitoes!
  • 4. 15. You will seldom hear criticism for being able to make your point quickly. Getting to the point is a one of the most valuable skill in business. You will seldom hear criticism for being able to make your point quickly. Most complaints are about people who take forever to tell you what they have to say. 16. Maintaining good mental health requires regular breaks from your normal routine. Sometimes you can’t change your job, but you can find something challenging to do in your leisure hours. If your job is primarily intellectual, then do something physical and vice-versa. 17. “The job isn’t finished until the tools are put away.” Many of us are like this. We’re “95 – per centers.” We go full force on something and then run out of steam for one reason or another. It usually happens when the end is in sight, when we know we can easily finish. The results are poor performance, criticism, and missed deadlines. We also feel guilty and frustrated. For better results don’t let up. Keep going until you’re finished. 95 per cent isn’t good enough. 18. Walk, talk and confidently, and you will soon feel more confident, too. Confidence is a skill and if you want to develop confidence you need to deliberately learn, act and practice this skill. The more you learn, the more confidence you become. 19. We would be a lot better off if we would choose a positive response when things go wrong. Things will go wrong, no matter what. That is just the way life is. And when they do, we will have some kind of response. Unfortunately, our response is usually a negative one. When things go wrong we should take the initiative to make things right. Don’t wait for the other person; make the first move yourself, even if it is not your fault. 20. Being polite costs nothing, but it pays great dividends. Have you ever thought or imagined about how much nicer the world would be if you were always polite to the people you meet? Being polite to others says a lot of oneself. 21. Remember your rights – fairness, self control, and communication. Please understand your three basic rights. You have the right to be treated fairly. You have the right to stay in control of yourself. You have the right to get your message across – correctly.
  • 5. 22. Take an inventory of yourself once a year. It is a good idea to pause, think and take a thorough look at yourself. Regularly assessing yourself in terms of learning about people, building relationships, facing and handling challenges, improving self-discipline & building on it will guarantee consistent personal growth. 23. Remember two rules for good relationships. Think before you speak. When you forget or ignore, apologize quickly. What will it take to be successful in future? Continual success is never guaranteed. The moment you begin to rest on your laurels is the time to start worrying. Just when you think you have got it made, it can easily fall apart. 24. One aspect of wisdom is knowing the difference between statements of facts and statements of inference. When we know the difference, we’ll stop jumping to conclusions or presuming to have knowledge we simply do not possess. 25. Garbage in, garbage out. Remember, your mind is like a computer, only more complex and advanced. Input, output. What goes in is what comes out. Control your input, and your output will take care of itself. 26. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Robert Schuller said: “Yard by yard, life is hard; but inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” Break your challenge into small manageable steps and always focus on the next step. You will be surprised at how much you can accomplish – one step at a time. 27. Don’t act like you feel; act the way you want to feel. If you feel depressed, act as if you’re happy. If you feel like sighing, laugh instead. Believe it or not, pretending is good for you. The more you act like you’re happy, confident and relaxed, the more you’ll feel like you’re happy, confident, and relaxed. In other words, your actions can change your feelings. 28. “The great enemy of understanding is imprecise language.” Mark Twain pointed out, “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is like the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” Learn new word everyday. Look up words to check their precise meaning. Improve your vocabulary, and you will improve your understanding at the same time.
  • 6. 29. Upset, angry, and hostile customers are simply a fact of life. Approach hostility confidently. Don’t shrink back in fear. Anger is the normal expression, and entirely appropriate in some situations. Just be ready to handle it. 30. Words are powerful, and how you use them either harnesses that power for you or unleashes it against you. Remember, the right word with the right emphasis at the right time has enormous power. Your emphasis makes all the difference. 31. The not-so-wise try to control others, while the wise persuade. To persuade, rather than control, experts suggest emphasizing the strong points, offering additional incentives, or stimulating their thinking. Thinking about what the other person might want and tie that reward to your request. Consider their personality. Some people will respond to a challenge, while others want an assurance of security. 32. Risk is a part of life. The majority of the risks we face are social risks. We’re afraid of looking foolish, being wrong, or feeling rejected. When these things happen, they hurt; to avoid potential pain, we play it safe and don’t take chances. If we wish to succeed at anything, however, we can’t play it safe all the time. We must learn to take risks, whether we like it or not. It would help, then, if we could learn to face risk positively. 33. There are several things you can do to hasten the switch to a good mood. Everyone has a bad mood now and then; they are simply a part of life. Sooner or later, the bad mood passes away and life is back to normal. 34. When we choose our habits we also choose the results that come with those habits. To break out of your rut, you must break your normal habit patterns and do something different. Become unpredictable. Life is a banquet, and some poor folks are starving to death. 35. Anxiety, coupled with inactivity, breeds even more anxiety. You can reduce your anxiety by admitting you lack knowledge, refusing to let the show-offs intimate you, and striving continually to learn something new. 36. Managers are being paid to get results, not to be perfect. Becoming less perfect may be difficult and take some time, but it is worth the effort. Living free from perfectionism will allow you to enjoy life and accomplish much
  • 7. more. You can be very good at your job without being perfect. Human beings are imperfect and you should know how to deal with imperfect people. 37. Whether or not others like us is largely up to us. It depends on what we do and how we get along with others. Many of us are not getting along with others as well as we like to pretend. Greet people as soon as you see them. Don’t wait for them to greet you first. Call them by their first name. Give them the impression that you are genuinely happy to see them. Just see how your likeability quotient goes up. 38. In the entire universe, there is only one you. The stronger your self-esteem, the better your life.
