4. Workbench is designed to be an application
administrators and developers can use to quickly
view their organizations' data and metadata, test and
troubleshoot their own applications, and be a one-stop
shop for interacting with the various Force.com APIs.
What is Workbench?
How can it help admins?

Editor's Notes
Thank you for joining me for this session – Workbench: The Developer Tool for Admins.
In this presentation I will show you how using Workbench can help you UP your Admin game and flex your Trailblazer muscles. You will leave understanding how it can open up new possibilities as well as provide useful shortcuts.
My aim for this session is that those of you who haven’t used workbench before go away and explore. That some of the use cases I talk about encourage you to go and try the same.
To introduce myself, my name is Louise Lockie and this is a little slide about me.
But WORKBENCH, I hear you say, surely that’s a developer tool (or for DIY enthusiasts) but NO, I am here to show you how it can add to every Admin’s toolkit (keeping up the analogy) and give you better insight and access to your org.Salesforce gives us lots of standard ways to access and change things as administrators but there comes a time in every admins career when they will benefit from using the back door, and taking a few shortcuts.
Also – who doesn’t like having more options?
Here is the description of Workbench and its purpose from the About page.
I have highlighted the two words which jump out at me. Administrators, showing us that it was designed for us too, and quickly, as this is the number one win for me with workbench, I can do stuff quickly. Quicker than via the Salesforce UI (IMO).
Workbench is completely FREE, it was developed by a Salesforce employee but it is not supported by SF so if you need assistance using it, come to the community, don’t log a ticket with Support.
Right in the browser using standard OAuth.
Production or Sandbox, Dec env, trailhead playground, any environment you have a login for.
API Enabled permission required if not a sys admin but bear in mind that the permissions you have with your login will apply here too.
Assign the Connected App to the user if this has been restricted
Workbench can do many things but I have grouped those that I want to talk about today into these four areas.
As our orgs grow in size and complexity then navigating the Salesforce setup menu can presents challenges.
As the list of WFR (for example) in your org gets longer and longer you may find yourself scrolling for days or creating list view after list view in order to check the rules per object.
Here you can FIND them all in one place.
FIND - Metadata Types and Component - find all WFR - field updates in one place, without having to keep creating views.
How many sharing rules, how many apex classes?
Also get IDs for items not easily accessible from standard UI
Describes the Attributes, fields, record types and child relationships of your objects in a tree format.
Child Relationships - Explore relationships between objects - Object Management
Fields and Picklist Values
Get Record Type ID
Now I spend a lot of my days working with Data Loader, there always seems to be something that needs to be loaded or updated in my org but Workbench provides a great alternative.
No software to download – all in the browser
Undelete
Purge (hard delete)
Don’t need ID - can match using other fields
10,000 limit
TOUR of screen
DELETED RECORDS – who deleted - undelete
Who here has had to go to the org recycling bin and scroll through page upon page of results?
Include ID - click on record - update record in Workbench
Jump straight into Record in SF
Sort and Filter
SOQL – let’s see it in action, we’ll start with something very quick and easy - count on object
Other stuff you can’t easily do in the standard UI
Frozen or Locked Out users
If you are feeling adventurous then there is also the Utilities menu
Perhaps not your first port of call but it is important to know that Workbench can carry out some of these actions.
Go back to your desk and next time you go to write a report in report builder for your own purpose, go to Workbench instead and try it there.
Use the stabilisers at first to get familiar the format
