SCIENCE
John Cacioppo (a social neuroscientist), as president of the
Association for Psychological Science, reported that
psychology is a “hub science,” in the sense that it has
considerable influence on other fields.
DEFINING SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
Social psychology is the branch of psychology that seek to
understand the nature and the cause of individual behavior
and thought in social situation.
Social psychology is the study of how individuals perceive,
influence, and relate to others.
SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY & OTHER
FIELDS OF PSYCHOLOGY
Part of the appeal of social psychology is that it is open to
almost anything in the realm of normal human behavior.
Many subfields of psychology are defined by a specific focus:
on mental illness, on children, or on brain processes.
Anything contributing to an increased understanding of how
people in general think, feel, and act is welcome.
SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY IS
SCIENTIFIC IN NATURE
In reality, the term science does not refer to a special group of
highly advance field. Rather it refers to two things.
I. A set of value
II. Several method that can be use to study a wide range of
topics.

We will discuss few of persuasions of Social Psychologists
that led to development of Modern Social Psychology
1.THE CONSISTENCY SEEKER
 Emphasize motivation
 Early social psychology emphasized motivation over
cognition
 One of the first big ideas in modern social psychology
during late 1950s & early 1960s was that people are
motivated to seek consistency
 emphasis in early years was in people’s motivated strivings
to attain and sustain it
 Theory of cognitive dissonance- also was a “drive”
motivated theory, not being “cognitive” in its theme
 Inconsistency can arise in many places, such as in conflict
between people’s actions and their attitudes or in their
perceptions of the social world.
2. THE SELF ESTEEM MAXIMIZER
 Being inconsistent makes you look bad, so people are
motivated to maintain their updated self (DISSONANCE
THEORY)
 People may avoid certain situations or persons, rationalize
events, and even provide themselves with excuses for
potential failure, all to prevent the loss of self-esteem.
 Few social psychological theories dispute that people are
sensitive to criticism, enjoy thinking well of themselves,
and will adjust their behavior and mental processes to
sustain a favorable image of self.
3. THE TERROR MANAGER
 According to Terror Management Theory, sexual activity,
achievement motivation, prejudice, emotion, and other
phenomena studied by social psychologists are all ways of
coping with the threatening idea that we will eventually die,
and with the terror that this idea evokes.
 By building and pursuing self-esteem, people can
presumably obliterate thoughts and fears of death. Self-
esteem is thus an artificial defense mechanism that helps
people forget about death.
4. THE INFORMATION SEEKER
 A relatively cognitive image of humankind
 Thinking and processing information is the paramount
human activity
 The simple assumption behind this theory is that it is
important and helpful for people to understand their worlds,
and so they constantly go about trying to collect
information.
 The Information Seekers are also interested in gaining
information about themselves.
 For example, choosing the right courses of study, the right
career, and the right mates.
5. THE INFORMATION
PROCESSOR
 The information is not simply taken in but rather is
subjected to fairly extensive processing. The is called
Cognitive Revolution.
 This is a more sophisticated version of Information
Seekers.
6. THE FOOLISH MISTAKE MAKER
 Showing that people do foolish, self-destructive, or
irrational things, possibly for surprising, intuitively
disturbing reasons, was a surer path to getting
published.
 Such things were the subject of research for social
psychologists in early days.
 “MAN BITES THE DOG”- The principle is that a dog
biting a man is typical and therefore not newsworthy,
but a man biting a dog is unusual and therefore worth
reporting.
7. THE NONDIFFERENT INDIVIDUAL,
OR THE SITUATIONAL RESPONDENTS
 The by-stander effect
 How people think, feel, and act is a direct result of
situational pressures and influences.
 Non-different Individual theory probably believed that
people do have personality traits that differentiate
them.
8. THE IMPRESSION MANAGER
 people simply try to present themselves to others in ways
that make a good impression.
 The Impression Manager cares greatly about what others
think, and so in that sense the theory has a strong
motivational component.
9. THE NATURALLY SELECTED
ANIMAL
 Prior to this, social psychologists explained that human
behavior was the result of immediate situational
factors and several types of longer-term influences.
Those included socialization, such as media, school,
and parental influences; Freudian processes, such as
unconscious motivations and the results of childhood
experiences; and reinforcement history.
 Many social psychologists today regard human beings
as simply another species of animal, and as such they
consider human social behavior to be the result of the
same evolutionary forces that shaped behavior among
all animals.
10. THE CULTURAL ANIMAL
 The human species used culture as its method of
solving problems of survival and reproduction. Culture
is basically a system that helps groups live together. It
is learned behavior that is transmitted through the
group (you do not have culture by yourself), and so the
prominent features of human psychology are designed
to help us participate in these group systems.
11. THE GROUP MEMBER
 The study of group processes has a long history in
social psychology.
 The Group Member can become de-individuated, may
engage in groupthink, and might even participate in
violence, for instance. These negative effects reveal the
group aspect of the Foolish Decision Maker.
 Opposite can also be observed.

THE 1ST EXPERIMENT IN SOCIAL
PSYCHOLOGY
 Italian philosopher, Carlo Cattaneo coined the term
“psicologia sociale” in 1864
 NORMAN TRIPPLET (1897) a professor at Indiana
University
While examining the cycling record of 1897 season, he
observed that bicycle riders who competed against others
performed better than those who competed against the
clock. He proposed that the presence of another rider
releases a “competitive instinct” which enhances the
individual performance.

 He tested his hypothesis by building a “competition
machine”. He had 40 children wind up a reel,
alternating b/w working alone and working parallel to
each other. He concluded that winding time was faster
when children worked side by side than alone.
THE EXPERIMENT BY MAX
RINGLEMANN (1880s)
 He had men pull up on a rope alone and as part of a group,
and he measured the amount of effort exerted by each
participant. He found that as group size increased,
individual effort decreased. This study explains why people
tend to slack off when working on group projects.
THE INTRODUCTION OF TEXTBOOKS
 The 1st two textbooks to bear the title SOCIAL
PSYCHOLOGY were published in 1908.
 One book was written by the psychologist WILLIAM
MCDOUGALL.
 Second book was written by another psychologist
EDWARD ROSS.
 The 3rd book was also published in 1924 by FLOYD
ALLPORT.
ANCIENT PHILOSOPHERS-as one of
the founders
 Some have argued that Aristotle was the first social
psychologist.
 Aristotle maintained that because humans are inherently
social, it is necessary to understand how the social
environment affects the individual.
 Plato described the utilitarian functions of groups,
introducing constructs later to reemerge as the social
contract, the group mind, obedience, conformity, social
facilitation, and social loafing.
 Socrates was also an advocate of persuasion.
INFLUENTIAL CONCEPTS OF
CLASSICAL ERA (19th century)
 John Locke’s insistence on observation as the basis of both personal
and scientific knowledge
 Rene Descartes’ ideas about cognition and the mind/body problem
 Jeremy Bentham’s hedonic calculus, which argued that humans act to
obtain pleasure and avoid pain
 Jean Jacques Rousseau’s social contract, which explained how people
cede certain rights to authorities in order to maintain well-functioning
groups
 Thomas Hobbes’s account of power seeking as a basic human motive
 Georg Hegel’s account of the social (group) mind as an entity unto
itself, which subsumes individual minds
 Charles Darwin, whose theory of evolution is above all else an account
of the role of social relations in reproduction and survival.
THE EMERGENCE OF FIELD (1850-
1930)
 “those mental products which are created by a community
of human life and are, therefore, inexplicable in terms
merely of individual consciousness since they presuppose
the reciprocal action of many”
(Wilhelm Wundt 1916)
 “Social psychology is a part of the psychology of the
individual, whose behavior it studies in relation to that
sector of his environment composed by his fellows”
(Gordon Allport 1924)
 William James first proposed the “motivated tactician”
model of social cognition—that thinking is for doing-and
that the self could vary in response to social context.
MATURATION & MIGRATION (1930-1945)
Notable landmarks in American social psychology in the
1930s included the following:
 the frustration–aggression hypothesis
 interest in the structure and function of attitude
 study of ethnic stereotypes which opened the door to the lasting interest
in prejudice and stereotyping in social psychology
 The functioning of self
 Kurt Lewin founded the Society for the Psychological Study of Social
Issues, in 1936, an organization that continues to be a hub for social
psychologists committed to social action.
FULL STEAM AHEAD (1946-1969)
 Solomon Asch experiment 1956
 Latane and Darley’s by stander effect experiment
(1970)
 Stanley Millgram obedience studies (1963,1965)
THE ASCENT OF SOCIAL COGNITION
(1970-1990)
 Gergen (1973) argued that social psychology should be
considered an historical rather than a scientific discipline,
because the principles underlying social behavior vary as a
function of time and culture.
 In “The Yin and Yang of Progress in Social Psychology”
McGuire proposed that the paradigm of testing hypotheses
by means of laboratory manipulated experiments [is
dissatisfying] . . . an adequate new paradigm will takes into
account multiple social variables.

The Society for Personality and Social Psychology,
founded in 1974, is the world’s largest organization
of social and personality psychologists. With over
7,500 members, SPSP strives to advance the
science, teaching, and application of social and
personality psychology.
GOALS & OBJECTIVES OF SPSP
1. Promote scientific research in personality and social
psychology
2. Promote education, training, mentoring, and varied career
opportunities in personality and social psychology
3. Enhance diversity of people and ideas in the field and
promote an inclusive and respectful climate
4. Increase the public and scientific impact of the field to
benefit society
5. Maintain an effective and efficient organization to benefit
the field

  • 2. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY- A HUB SCIENCE John Cacioppo (a social neuroscientist), as president of the Association for Psychological Science, reported that psychology is a “hub science,” in the sense that it has considerable influence on other fields.
  • 3. DEFINING SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY Social psychology is the branch of psychology that seek to understand the nature and the cause of individual behavior and thought in social situation. Social psychology is the study of how individuals perceive, influence, and relate to others.
  • 4. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY & OTHER FIELDS OF PSYCHOLOGY Part of the appeal of social psychology is that it is open to almost anything in the realm of normal human behavior. Many subfields of psychology are defined by a specific focus: on mental illness, on children, or on brain processes. Anything contributing to an increased understanding of how people in general think, feel, and act is welcome.

  • 8. 1.THE CONSISTENCY SEEKER  Emphasize motivation  Early social psychology emphasized motivation over cognition  One of the first big ideas in modern social psychology during late 1950s & early 1960s was that people are motivated to seek consistency  emphasis in early years was in people’s motivated strivings to attain and sustain it  Theory of cognitive dissonance- also was a “drive” motivated theory, not being “cognitive” in its theme  Inconsistency can arise in many places, such as in conflict between people’s actions and their attitudes or in their perceptions of the social world.

THE SELF ESTEEM MAXIMIZER  Being inconsistent makes you look bad, so people are motivated to maintain their updated self (DISSONANCE THEORY)  People may avoid certain situations or persons, rationalize events, and even provide themselves with excuses for potential failure, all to prevent the loss of self-esteem.  Few social psychological theories dispute that people are sensitive to criticism, enjoy thinking well of themselves, and will adjust their behavior and mental processes to sustain a favorable image of self.

THE TERROR MANAGER  According to Terror Management Theory, sexual activity, achievement motivation, prejudice, emotion, and other phenomena studied by social psychologists are all ways of coping with the threatening idea that we will eventually die, and with the terror that this idea evokes.  By building and pursuing self-esteem, people can presumably obliterate thoughts and fears of death. Self- esteem is thus an artificial defense mechanism that helps people forget about death.

THE INFORMATION SEEKER  A relatively cognitive image of humankind  Thinking and processing information is the paramount human activity  The simple assumption behind this theory is that it is important and helpful for people to understand their worlds, and so they constantly go about trying to collect information.  The Information Seekers are also interested in gaining information about themselves.  For example, choosing the right courses of study, the right career, and the right mates.
  • 12. 5. THE INFORMATION PROCESSOR  The information is not simply taken in but rather is subjected to fairly extensive processing. The is called Cognitive Revolution.  This is a more sophisticated version of Information Seekers.

THE FOOLISH MISTAKE MAKER  Showing that people do foolish, self-destructive, or irrational things, possibly for surprising, intuitively disturbing reasons, was a surer path to getting published.  Such things were the subject of research for social psychologists in early days.  “MAN BITES THE DOG”- The principle is that a dog biting a man is typical and therefore not newsworthy, but a man biting a dog is unusual and therefore worth reporting.

THE NONDIFFERENT INDIVIDUAL, OR THE SITUATIONAL RESPONDENTS  The by-stander effect  How people think, feel, and act is a direct result of situational pressures and influences.  Non-different Individual theory probably believed that people do have personality traits that differentiate them.
  • 15. 8. THE IMPRESSION MANAGER  people simply try to present themselves to others in ways that make a good impression.  The Impression Manager cares greatly about what others think, and so in that sense the theory has a strong motivational component.

THE NATURALLY SELECTED ANIMAL  Prior to this, social psychologists explained that human behavior was the result of immediate situational factors and several types of longer-term influences. Those included socialization, such as media, school, and parental influences; Freudian processes, such as unconscious motivations and the results of childhood experiences; and reinforcement history.  Many social psychologists today regard human beings as simply another species of animal, and as such they consider human social behavior to be the result of the same evolutionary forces that shaped behavior among all animals.
  • 17. 10. THE CULTURAL ANIMAL  The human species used culture as its method of solving problems of survival and reproduction. Culture is basically a system that helps groups live together. It is learned behavior that is transmitted through the group (you do not have culture by yourself), and so the prominent features of human psychology are designed to help us participate in these group systems.

THE GROUP MEMBER  The study of group processes has a long history in social psychology.  The Group Member can become de-individuated, may engage in groupthink, and might even participate in violence, for instance. These negative effects reveal the group aspect of the Foolish Decision Maker.  Opposite can also be observed.

THE 1ST EXPERIMENT IN SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY  Italian philosopher, Carlo Cattaneo coined the term “psicologia sociale” in 1864  NORMAN TRIPPLET (1897) a professor at Indiana University While examining the cycling record of 1897 season, he observed that bicycle riders who competed against others performed better than those who competed against the clock. He proposed that the presence of another rider releases a “competitive instinct” which enhances the individual performance.
  • 21. Contd…  He tested his hypothesis by building a “competition machine”. He had 40 children wind up a reel, alternating b/w working alone and working parallel to each other. He concluded that winding time was faster when children worked side by side than alone.
  • 22. THE EXPERIMENT BY MAX RINGLEMANN (1880s)  He had men pull up on a rope alone and as part of a group, and he measured the amount of effort exerted by each participant. He found that as group size increased, individual effort decreased. This study explains why people tend to slack off when working on group projects.

THE INTRODUCTION OF TEXTBOOKS  The 1st two textbooks to bear the title SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY were published in 1908.  One book was written by the psychologist WILLIAM MCDOUGALL.  Second book was written by another psychologist EDWARD ROSS.  The 3rd book was also published in 1924 by FLOYD ALLPORT.

ANCIENT PHILOSOPHERS-as one of the founders  Some have argued that Aristotle was the first social psychologist.  Aristotle maintained that because humans are inherently social, it is necessary to understand how the social environment affects the individual.  Plato described the utilitarian functions of groups, introducing constructs later to reemerge as the social contract, the group mind, obedience, conformity, social facilitation, and social loafing.  Socrates was also an advocate of persuasion.

INFLUENTIAL CONCEPTS OF CLASSICAL ERA (19th century)  John Locke’s insistence on observation as the basis of both personal and scientific knowledge  Rene Descartes’ ideas about cognition and the mind/body problem  Jeremy Bentham’s hedonic calculus, which argued that humans act to obtain pleasure and avoid pain  Jean Jacques Rousseau’s social contract, which explained how people cede certain rights to authorities in order to maintain well-functioning groups  Thomas Hobbes’s account of power seeking as a basic human motive  Georg Hegel’s account of the social (group) mind as an entity unto itself, which subsumes individual minds  Charles Darwin, whose theory of evolution is above all else an account of the role of social relations in reproduction and survival.

THE EMERGENCE OF FIELD (1850- 1930)  “those mental products which are created by a community of human life and are, therefore, inexplicable in terms merely of individual consciousness since they presuppose the reciprocal action of many” (Wilhelm Wundt 1916)  “Social psychology is a part of the psychology of the individual, whose behavior it studies in relation to that sector of his environment composed by his fellows” (Gordon Allport 1924)

MATURATION & MIGRATION (1930-1945) Notable landmarks in American social psychology in the 1930s included the following:  the frustration–aggression hypothesis  interest in the structure and function of attitude  study of ethnic stereotypes which opened the door to the lasting interest in prejudice and stereotyping in social psychology  The functioning of self  Kurt Lewin founded the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, in 1936, an organization that continues to be a hub for social psychologists committed to social action.

THE ASCENT OF SOCIAL COGNITION (1970-1990)  Gergen (1973) argued that social psychology should be considered an historical rather than a scientific discipline, because the principles underlying social behavior vary as a function of time and culture.  In “The Yin and Yang of Progress in Social Psychology” McGuire proposed that the paradigm of testing hypotheses by means of laboratory manipulated experiments [is dissatisfying] . . . an adequate new paradigm will takes into account multiple social variables.

SOCIETY FOR PERSONALITY & SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY (SPSP) The Society for Personality and Social Psychology, founded in 1974, is the world’s largest organization of social and personality psychologists. With over 7,500 members, SPSP strives to advance the science, teaching, and application of social and personality psychology.
