Parts of a Circuit Brett Belcher
Standard Indicator Project Standard 4.6.1 -Common Themes Demonstrate that an object consisting of many parts, the parts usually influence or interact with one another.
Background Information An electrical circuit is a path which electrons from a voltage or current source follow. Electric current flows in a path called an electric circuit. Without each part of the circuit working together, energy will not be transferred.
Vocabulary Circuit - an electrical device that provides a path for electrical current to flow Current – a flow of electricity though a conductor Energy – the capacity of a system to do work.
Materials For this project the materials you have been provided with are: D- cell battery Flashlight bulbs Wire Tape Paper and Pencils
Activity For your first try, use wire to connect one end of your wire to the negative (bottom) part of the battery. Use the other end of the battery and connect it to the base of the bulb. Does the bulb light up? ______________
Activity For your second try, use one end of the wire and connect it to the positive (top) end of your battery. Use the other end of the wire and connect it to the base of your bulb. Did the bulb light up? ____________
Activity For your third attempt, use wire to connect the negative (bottom) part of the battery to the base of the bulb. With another strand of wire connect the positive (top) part of your battery with the base of the bulb. Did the bulb light up? __________
Assessment On the paper provided to you answer the following questions. What happens when all of the parts of the circuit are used? What happens when only some of the parts of the object are used? Why do you think everything has to be connected for the bulb to light up?
