Sexual reproduction
• Bulls alone cannot produce
new calves, nor can hens
alone produce new chicks.
• In such cases, both sexes,
males and females, are
needed to produce new
generations
• Reprodution with the fusion
of male & female gametes is
said to be sexual
reproduction
Advantages of sexual reproduction
• In sexual reproduction, more variations are
produced. Thus, it ensures survival of
species in a population.
• The new formed individual has
Characteristics of both the parents.
• Variations are more viable in sexual mode
than in asexual one. This is because in
asexual reproduction, DNA has to function
inside the inherited cellular apparatus.
Importance of the variations
• Variations are beneficial to the species than
individual because sometimes for a species, the
environmental conditions change so drastically that
their survival becomes difficult.
• For example, if the temperature of water increases
suddenly, then most of the bacteria living in that
water would die. Only few variants that are resistant
to heat would be able to survive.
• However, if these variants were not there, then the
entire species of bacteria would have been
destroyed. Thus, these variants help in the survival
of the species. However, all variations are not
necessarily beneficial for the individual organisms.
DNA COPYING
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is
the genetic material found in
the chromosomes, which are
present in the nucleus of a
cell.
The DNA is the information site
for making proteins and each
specific type of protein leads
to a specific type of body
design.
Thus, it is the DNA molecule
that determines the body
design of an individual.
Therefore, it can be concluded
that it is the DNA that gets
transferred from parents to
offsprings and makes them
look similar
Changes in girls at the time of
puberty
• In girls, breast size begins to increase, with
darkening of the skin of the nipples at the
tips of the breasts.
• They begin to menstruate at around this
time.
Changes in boys at the puberty
age
• Boys begin to have new thick hair
growth on the face
• Their voices begin to crack.
• The penis occasionally begins to
become enlarged and erect, either in
daydreams or at night
common changes observed in boys
and girls at puberty
• (i) Hair-Growth of hair in arm pits and genital
area between the thighs.
• (ii)Genital area- Becomes darker.
• (iii) Body hair-Thinner hair on legs, arms and
face.
• (iv)Skin-Becomes oily, appearance of
pimples mainly on face.
• (v)Awareness of body- Children become
conscious and aware of their own bodies as
well as those of others.
All of these changes take place slowly, over a period of months
and years. They do not happen all at the same time in one
person, nor do they happen at an exact age.
In some people, they happen early and quickly, while in others,
they can happen very slowly. Also, each change does not
become complete quickly either. So, for example, thick hair on
the face in boys appears as a few scattered hairs first, and only
slowly does the growth begin to become uniform.
Even so, all these changes show differences between people. Just
as we have differently shaped noses or fingers, so also we
have different patterns of hair growth, or size and shape of
breast or penis. All of these changes are aspects of the sexual
maturation of the body
Sexual mode of reproduction
• sexual mode of reproduction means that
germ-cells from two individuals have to join
together.
• This can happen by the external release of
germ-cells from the bodies of individuals, as
happens in flowering plants. Or it can happen
by two individuals joining their bodies
together for internal transfer of germ-cells for
fusion, as happens in many animals.
Male reproductive system
• The male reproductive system
consists of portions which
produce the germ-cells and other
portions that deliver the germ-cells
to the site of fertilisation.
• The formation of germ-cells or
sperms takes place in the testes.
• These are located outside the
abdominal cavity in scrotum
because sperm formation requires
a lower temperature than the
normal body temperature.
• The sperms formed in
testes are delivered
through the vas deferens
which unites with a tube
coming from the urinary
bladder( urethra))
• The urethra thus forms a
common passage for
both the sperms and urine.
Acessory sex glands
• 1. Prostate gland
• 2. Seminal vesicles
• 3. Bulbo urethral
glands
FUNCTIONS
• Their secretions
makes sperms
transport easier
• This fluid also
provides nutrition.
Sperm
• The sperms are
tiny bodies that
consist of mainly
genetic material
and a long tail
that helps them
to move towards
the female germ-
cell.
Female reproductive system
• The female germ-cells or eggs are
made in the ovaries. They are also
responsible for the production of
some hormones
• When a girl is born, the ovaries
already contain thousands of
immature eggs. On reaching
puberty, some of these start
maturing.
• One egg is produced every
month by one of the ovaries. The
egg is carried from the ovary to
the womb through a thin oviduct
or fallopian tube.
• The two oviducts unite into an
elastic bag-like structure known
as the uterus.
• The uterus opens into the vagina
through the cervix.
FERTILIZATION
• The sperms enter
through the vaginal
passage during sexual
intercourse.
• They travel upwards
and reach the oviduct
where they may
encounter the egg.
Implantation
• The fertilised egg, the zygote, gets implanted in
the lining of the uterus, and starts dividing
Placenta
The embryo gets nutrition from
the mother’s blood with the help
of a special tissue called
placenta.
This is a disc which is mbedded
in the uterine wall.
It contains villi on the embryo’s
side of the tissue. On the
mother’s side are blood spaces,
which surround the villi. This
provides a large surface area for
glucose and oxygen to pass
from the mother to the embryo.
Functions of Placenta
• This provides a large
surface area for glucose
and oxygen to pass from
the mother to the
embryo.
• The developing embryo
will also generate waste
substances which can be
removed by transferring
them into the mother’s
blood through the
placenta.
Child birth
• The development of
the child inside the
mother’s body takes
approximately nine
months.
• The child is born as
a result of rhythmic
contractions of the
muscles in the
uterus.
What happens when the Egg is not Fertilised?
• If the egg is not fertilised, it lives for about one day.
Since the ovary releases one egg every month, the
uterus also prepares itself every month to receive a
fertilised egg. Thus its lining becomes thick and
spongy. This would be required for nourishing the embryo
if fertilisation had taken place.
• Now, however, this lining is not needed any longer. So,
the lining slowly breaks and comes out through the
vagina as blood and mucous.
• This cycle takes place roughly every month and is known
as menstruation. It usually lasts for about two to eight
days.
Contraceptive methods
• 1. Barrier methods
• 2. Chemical
methods
• 3. IUDs
• 4. Surgical methods
Barrier methods
• It involves the creation of a mechanical
barrier so that sperm does not reach
the egg.
ex-Condoms on the penis or similar
coverings worn in the vagina can serve
this purpose
Chemical methods
• They change the hormonal
balance of the body so that
eggs are not released and
fertilisation cannot occur.
These drugs commonly
need to be taken orally as
pills.
• However, since they
change hormonal
balances, they can cause
side-effects too.
Oral pills
Intra uterine devices
• The loop or the
copper-T are
placed in the
uterus to prevent
pregnancy.
• They can cause
side effects due to
irritation of the
uterus.
Copper T
loop
Surgical methods
• 1. Tubectomy
• 2. Vasectomy
Tubectomy
If the fallopian
tube in the
female is
blocked, the
egg will not be
able to reach
the uterus.
Vasectomy
• If the vas
deferens in the
male is blocked,
sperm transfer
will be prevented
Surgical methods
• Surgical methods are safe in the long
run, surgery itself can cause infections
and other problems if not performed
properly.
• Surgery can also be used for removal
of unwanted pregnancies
Sexually transmitted diseases
• Diseases can be transmitted from person to person
in a variety of ways.
• Since the sexual act is a very intimate Connection of
bodies, that many diseases can be sexually
transmitted.
These include
Bacterial infections
• 1.Gonorrhoea
• 2.Syphilis
viral infections
1.warts
2.HIV-AIDS.

Sexual reproduction in animals ppt

  • 1.
  • 2. Sexual reproduction • Bulls alone cannot produce new calves, nor can hens alone produce new chicks. • In such cases, both sexes, males and females, are needed to produce new generations • Reprodution with the fusion of male & female gametes is said to be sexual reproduction
  • 3. Advantages of sexual reproduction • In sexual reproduction, more variations are produced. Thus, it ensures survival of species in a population. • The new formed individual has Characteristics of both the parents. • Variations are more viable in sexual mode than in asexual one. This is because in asexual reproduction, DNA has to function inside the inherited cellular apparatus.
  • 4. Importance of the variations • Variations are beneficial to the species than individual because sometimes for a species, the environmental conditions change so drastically that their survival becomes difficult. • For example, if the temperature of water increases suddenly, then most of the bacteria living in that water would die. Only few variants that are resistant to heat would be able to survive. • However, if these variants were not there, then the entire species of bacteria would have been destroyed. Thus, these variants help in the survival of the species. However, all variations are not necessarily beneficial for the individual organisms.
  • 5. DNA COPYING DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic material found in the chromosomes, which are present in the nucleus of a cell. The DNA is the information site for making proteins and each specific type of protein leads to a specific type of body design. Thus, it is the DNA molecule that determines the body design of an individual. Therefore, it can be concluded that it is the DNA that gets transferred from parents to offsprings and makes them look similar
  • 6. Changes in girls at the time of puberty • In girls, breast size begins to increase, with darkening of the skin of the nipples at the tips of the breasts. • They begin to menstruate at around this time.
  • 7. Changes in boys at the puberty age • Boys begin to have new thick hair growth on the face • Their voices begin to crack. • The penis occasionally begins to become enlarged and erect, either in daydreams or at night
  • 8. common changes observed in boys and girls at puberty • (i) Hair-Growth of hair in arm pits and genital area between the thighs. • (ii)Genital area- Becomes darker. • (iii) Body hair-Thinner hair on legs, arms and face. • (iv)Skin-Becomes oily, appearance of pimples mainly on face. • (v)Awareness of body- Children become conscious and aware of their own bodies as well as those of others.
  • 9. All of these changes take place slowly, over a period of months and years. They do not happen all at the same time in one person, nor do they happen at an exact age. In some people, they happen early and quickly, while in others, they can happen very slowly. Also, each change does not become complete quickly either. So, for example, thick hair on the face in boys appears as a few scattered hairs first, and only slowly does the growth begin to become uniform. Even so, all these changes show differences between people. Just as we have differently shaped noses or fingers, so also we have different patterns of hair growth, or size and shape of breast or penis. All of these changes are aspects of the sexual maturation of the body
  • 10. Sexual mode of reproduction • sexual mode of reproduction means that germ-cells from two individuals have to join together. • This can happen by the external release of germ-cells from the bodies of individuals, as happens in flowering plants. Or it can happen by two individuals joining their bodies together for internal transfer of germ-cells for fusion, as happens in many animals.
  • 11. Male reproductive system • The male reproductive system consists of portions which produce the germ-cells and other portions that deliver the germ-cells to the site of fertilisation. • The formation of germ-cells or sperms takes place in the testes. • These are located outside the abdominal cavity in scrotum because sperm formation requires a lower temperature than the normal body temperature.
  • 12. • The sperms formed in testes are delivered through the vas deferens which unites with a tube coming from the urinary bladder( urethra)) • The urethra thus forms a common passage for both the sperms and urine.
  • 13. Acessory sex glands • 1. Prostate gland • 2. Seminal vesicles • 3. Bulbo urethral glands FUNCTIONS • Their secretions makes sperms transport easier • This fluid also provides nutrition.
  • 14. Sperm • The sperms are tiny bodies that consist of mainly genetic material and a long tail that helps them to move towards the female germ- cell.
  • 15. Female reproductive system • The female germ-cells or eggs are made in the ovaries. They are also responsible for the production of some hormones • When a girl is born, the ovaries already contain thousands of immature eggs. On reaching puberty, some of these start maturing. • One egg is produced every month by one of the ovaries. The egg is carried from the ovary to the womb through a thin oviduct or fallopian tube. • The two oviducts unite into an elastic bag-like structure known as the uterus. • The uterus opens into the vagina through the cervix.
  • 16. FERTILIZATION • The sperms enter through the vaginal passage during sexual intercourse. • They travel upwards and reach the oviduct where they may encounter the egg.
  • 17. Implantation • The fertilised egg, the zygote, gets implanted in the lining of the uterus, and starts dividing
  • 18.
  • 19. Placenta The embryo gets nutrition from the mother’s blood with the help of a special tissue called placenta. This is a disc which is mbedded in the uterine wall. It contains villi on the embryo’s side of the tissue. On the mother’s side are blood spaces, which surround the villi. This provides a large surface area for glucose and oxygen to pass from the mother to the embryo.
  • 20. Functions of Placenta • This provides a large surface area for glucose and oxygen to pass from the mother to the embryo. • The developing embryo will also generate waste substances which can be removed by transferring them into the mother’s blood through the placenta.
  • 21. Child birth • The development of the child inside the mother’s body takes approximately nine months. • The child is born as a result of rhythmic contractions of the muscles in the uterus.
  • 22. What happens when the Egg is not Fertilised? • If the egg is not fertilised, it lives for about one day. Since the ovary releases one egg every month, the uterus also prepares itself every month to receive a fertilised egg. Thus its lining becomes thick and spongy. This would be required for nourishing the embryo if fertilisation had taken place. • Now, however, this lining is not needed any longer. So, the lining slowly breaks and comes out through the vagina as blood and mucous. • This cycle takes place roughly every month and is known as menstruation. It usually lasts for about two to eight days.
  • 23. Contraceptive methods • 1. Barrier methods • 2. Chemical methods • 3. IUDs • 4. Surgical methods
  • 24. Barrier methods • It involves the creation of a mechanical barrier so that sperm does not reach the egg. ex-Condoms on the penis or similar coverings worn in the vagina can serve this purpose
  • 25. Chemical methods • They change the hormonal balance of the body so that eggs are not released and fertilisation cannot occur. These drugs commonly need to be taken orally as pills. • However, since they change hormonal balances, they can cause side-effects too. Oral pills
  • 26. Intra uterine devices • The loop or the copper-T are placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. • They can cause side effects due to irritation of the uterus. Copper T loop
  • 27. Surgical methods • 1. Tubectomy • 2. Vasectomy
  • 28. Tubectomy If the fallopian tube in the female is blocked, the egg will not be able to reach the uterus.
  • 29. Vasectomy • If the vas deferens in the male is blocked, sperm transfer will be prevented
  • 30. Surgical methods • Surgical methods are safe in the long run, surgery itself can cause infections and other problems if not performed properly. • Surgery can also be used for removal of unwanted pregnancies
  • 31. Sexually transmitted diseases • Diseases can be transmitted from person to person in a variety of ways. • Since the sexual act is a very intimate Connection of bodies, that many diseases can be sexually transmitted. These include Bacterial infections • 1.Gonorrhoea • 2.Syphilis viral infections 1.warts 2.HIV-AIDS.
