Composition 1 Reflection
During my first semester here at Stout I learned lot in all my classes but especially in my
Composition 1 class. As I did not have the greatest English teachers in the past this semester was
very helpful to me. Not only was I able to expand my composition skills but also how to think and
develop my writing even further. I could apply these new skills in my speech class as well and it
gave me a better help when preparing and presenting my speeches. This was very helpful for my
speech class when it came time for my final a persuasive speech. Composition 1 helped me in this
way as it helped me be a better persuasive writer. I could accomplish this during several projects I
did in this class. First was my profile proposal where I had to convince...show more content...
One of the ways I could do this by becoming more familiar with the library database. During my
high school projects, we did not need to always use scholarly sources so I usually just did Google
searches for my projects but in this class I had to use scholarly sources for some of my
information which was good as I learned to navigate and sort in the library's extensive database. I
was also able to learn how to look at credibility. During high school I just used the first articles I
could find that would help with my topic. I did not really give the credibility a second thought but
in Composition 1 I learned to take the credibility of an author into account when using that source
for my research. Lastly, I learned about doing academic research by doing pertinent research on
my topic. Once again in high school I looked at research and thought it was good but I didn't read
it thoroughly and found that sometimes I did not get the information I needed for my project. In
Composition 1 I learned this as I struggled to find some relevant items sometimes but overall I
could gather the correct information for my projects. In my journalism project I was also able to
join the academic "conversation" on the

How My Writing Has Improved
After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the
skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don't just look at
grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise.
Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further
on in the future. My strong points as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the
poems and stories we experienced this semester. Writing has been an important form of
expression for me. I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult
for me because I can't always seem to find the right words to say. I feel that I am more expressive
and have more control over what I want to say. While this semester progressed toward its end, I
have learned new writing skills and gradually learned how to engage with audiences. This skill
was very useful in meeting my course goals in English 102. I believe that I have grown at
organization and careful stream my thoughts as well. Before I would just begin writing my papers
without any plans or organization, along with no definite idea of where I would be going with the
assignments, but throughout this course I've learned that you should base your paper around your
thesis statement. Another skill I took from this class was to value my classmate's responses, from
their reactions made me much more aware that my main ideas

What I Learned In Composition Class
Let's be honest, I'm not the best writer. I have had to write paper after paper for about 12 weeks.
Writing isn't my strong suit and I don't think it will ever be a strong suit of mine. During the 12
weeks of composition class, I have seen improvement in my writing. Many people don't like writing
but writing skills are needed in life. I'm a junior in high school and if I want to get scholarships for
college, I'm going to need to write essays. Whether I become a plumber or a CEO I need writing
skills. I thought that the class was fun because I knew some of my classmates. My teacher was
pretty cool as well. I enjoyed being able to pick my own topics for the papers that I wrote. It was a
lot easier writing about something that I was genuinely was interested in, rather than a topic that
was chosen for me. I enjoyed having a minimal amount of guidelines to follow. It was nice because
I could freely write my paper. I was never worried about the exact structure of the paper. It helped
me broaden my horizon, when it came to writing....show more content...
Firzlaff was very helpful in providing real life examples and topics to write about. She provided
insight and helpful comments to make my writing better. I could tell that she was interested in
helping me become a better writer. She always did her best to help me reach my full potential. She
was also very understanding and kind, I didn't feel uncomfortable asking Mrs. Firzlaff questions. I
find that I don't like asking questions in my other classes because I don't want to "sound dumb", but
I never felt that way in Mrs. Firzlaff's class.
In conclusion, I recommend taking a composition class because it gave me confidence in my
writing skills. I really dislike writing but this class has helped me improve. After taking this class
you'll think that writing papers are a piece of

Essay on Pride
Pride
The word pride in itself isn't an important word but it's meaning implies many things. There are
several different definitions for pride. Pride can be referred to as a type of plant, a form of body
ornamentation, or even a group of lions. The most commonly used definition of pride is being
proud, or having a feeling of great accomplishment and feeling self–satisfaction. The word pride both
positive and negative meanings that can be seen throughout history.
In 1297AD, pride was described as "A consciousness or feeling of what is befitting or due to
oneself or one's position, which prevents a person from doing what he considers to be beneath him
or unworthy of him; esp. as a good quality,...show more content...
Pride was believed to be "a high or overweening opinion of one's own qualities, attainments, or
estate, which gives rise to a feeling and attitude of superiority over and contempt for others" (OED
2). This usage of the word pride gives it a negative cynical connotation, describing people as vain,
arrogant or belittling other people. An example of this could be when someone famous thanks "all
the little people" as seen as in movies and TV as a joke. They are suggesting that they are bigger or
greater than others. Pride is not a negative trait to have if it doesn't get the best of you.
When instilled in the young, pride is a building block of a healthy self–esteem. This is important and
necessary to promote a positive self–worth. A child needs to hear that he or she has done something
well. Praise will reinforce positive characteristics and does not focus on limitations as it builds
pride. He or she should be proud of what they have worked for. Winning a competition is not as
important as doing one's best. When someone does their best they try and strive to do even better
just winning sets limits. Without a healthy self–worth, the child feels inferior and shame. When a
child feels proud of their accomplishments, they feel good about themself. This will encourage the
child to continue to perform at his best. Praise for accomplishments fosters pride. Praise can come
from a parent, friend, teacher, or even one self. It is also important to teach the child to

Saying Goodbye Essay
I never thought this day would come. I mean, I did know it was coming, but I just never thought
it would be this soon. Since birth, Lina has been my older sister, my companion, my confidant,
and moreover, my best friend. As years passed, I acknowledged that we were getting older, and
that the date of her departure was getting closer, yet, I did not want to believe it. Since last year,
she had been in the exhausting process of applying to universities, and by the end of May, the
University of New Orleans (UNO) granted her with a generous scholarship. With a smile full of
pride and amazement, she accepted the scholarship and reserved her space in the Psychology field
in the UNO. Overshadowed by the great news of her scholarship, we failed to...show more content...
Suddenly, she stood up and a warm smile lightened her face. Her eyes shone with excitement as her
three best friends approached her. They talked and laughed zealously; they joked as if they had
forgotten what was about to happen in less than an hour. I could not help myself from watching
her. Her smile was genuine and her sight deep. Her voice was melodic while she recounted all the
anecdotes the four girls had shared for six long years. She moved her hands while she talked and
showed her perfectly white teeth while she laughed. There was no fear in her face, just a spark of
adventure glistened at the corner of her eyes. She was about to undertake a journey to the small
state of Louisiana, to the beautiful jazz city of New Orleans, and even at the verge of starting a
new life on her own, she showed no signs of anxiety or uneasiness. There were so many reasons
why not to cry: she was happy, she was young, she had a great opportunity to study abroad,
something not everyone has, and many more that would take me a whole day to mention.
However, I only needed one reason why to cry: I would no longer have her by my side. As a
tremendous storm, an urge of crying overwhelmed me, and all I could do was to sit down, hide my
face in my hands and let my emotions overpower me. She looked at me and frowned. I knew it hurt
her to see me that way, but I couldn't stop. She came near me and hugged me, without saying a word.

Walking inside the typical composition class, one can expect to see the students crafting the
five–paragraph essay or working on a persuasive piece as they try to argue they side of an in–class
debate. Composition classes do not only work on a studentГs writing, they also get the students to
think through their writing (at least the good ones do). There is a certain well–accepted style to
teaching writing in the traditional composition class, and it works very well for many students and
teachers. However, should the line of comfort be crossed, and if so, how? Should composition
instructors grab a hold of a different writing style, making it the focal point of their pedagogies in
their writing classes? More importantly, if they do, what...show more content...
Of course, they are well–suited to teaching writing of any kind to their students, but could they not
be more effective in doing so if they had the freedom to teach the typical Г¬five–paragraphГ® or
Г¬persuasiveГ® as a piece of creative writing/literature?
While BishopГs work on the topic of using creative writing in the composition classroom is crucial
to any understanding of the argument, Deborah Dean, in Г¬Muddying Boundaries: Mixing Genres
with Five Paragraphs,Г® also extensively explores the question I just raised, and does so by
bringing in the concept of Г¬genre theory.Г® In an explanation of Г¬genre theory,Г® Dean states
that, Г¬one way to make writing interesting is to create the experiences of the genre in the mind of
the reader and then tweak one or twoГ® (Dean 53). Using the example of a childrenГs fairy tale to
illustrate her point, Dean goes on to say that genre theory is a bit controversial, saying that Г¬if
applied without thought, it could mean a return to a focus on forms and product over processГ®
(Dean 53). Proponents of genre theory, however, feel just the opposite. To them, genre theory is Г¬a
more logical way to empower our students, to give them the ability to write in ways that will help
them be successful in the social situations in which theyГll find themselvesГ® (Dean 53).
Application of genre theory in the classroom Г¬is a process because it asks students to analyze the
social context

Personal Experience: English Composition Course
Focusing in self– evaluation to improve the learning process, help me to set goals and be aware of
my own mistakes. When the English Composition course started, I wanted to be able to express
my thoughts and my ideas in an effective way. The continuation of my education was very
difficult, and I began to doubt myself when faced with the first couple of weeks. My first
assignment was my most difficult assignment, and I found myself having trouble sticking to a
thesis, because I had so many ideas that I did not know how to organize, and that was the primary
purpose of taking this course, to learn to make my writings more organized. I choose three
assignments out of the six, which were not only my favorite assignments; they are all written in
classical perspective. I prefer to write in classical perspective so I may get my personal opinion to a
specific audience. As I wrote each assignment I described my past experience as if I was speaking to
a group telling my story. Writing with emotion as I envisioned my past experiences and how I can
get my audience to feel as I felt was my goal. I wrote in classical perspective in the interest of
writing my personality and voice, but it also shows how I perceive my audience. By changing the
structure and organizing my thoughts I was able to shape the overall character of my work. In all
three assignments I wrote in first person point of view. I choose first person view so I can express a

This semester I learned many new things in my English 1301 class. I took this class last year but
I had to drop it because I didn't have a professor explaining the work to me. And I really didn't
understand what I was doing. At first, I was scared to take this class. During my high school years I
wasn't that good of a writer. I thought this composition class was going to be hard since I sometimes
thought it was hard in high school. My writing experience was good and sometimes bad. This
semester in the composition class I had many writing strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and
weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester. My
first writing weakness was deciding what to write about. I...show more content...
I was really happy that I didn't have trouble filling up those pages. This contributed to my essay
writing because it showed me that if I don't give and try my best I will be able to do it. It also
showed me to always think positive, if I'm always thinking of negative stuff I won't be able to set
my mind free and try my best in the stuff I do. Another strength I had was finding the symbols in
the short story ВЁThe LotteryВЁ. When I first read it I didn't find any symbols. After Mrs.
Philpott gave us the lesson on symbolism in literature I found many symbols. I also saw how
those symbols give the readers clues so we could get a clue of how the ending is. I won't forget
about this lesson and when I read books I'm going to pay close attention to the words. If I pay
attention to that maybe I will get a taste of how the ending is going to be. This was one of the
lesson I enjoyed the most. This contributed because this is something I'm going to know for the
rest of my life. The third writing strength I had was that I didn't have trouble with the quotes. We
had a lesson over how we had to add the quotes on the essay. That lesson helped my mind refresh
from what I had learned during high school. I wasn't completely lost on this, but had to pay
attention. I was a little scared because it said that if I plagiarized I would get a zero and possibly
fail the semester. I personally think that we the writers don't really try to plagiarize. The only thing

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite
better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and
the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the
contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards.

methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall
theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past...show more content...
This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand
the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever
received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays
writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about
and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned
while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal,
narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I
encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was
finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything
else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and
myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most
of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was
understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms

more group based and not individual, so I felt like my first paper was strictly about my opinion.

My English Composition Analysis
Throughout English composition 1 my grades have fluctuated drastically. Some papers were
surprisingly great and some have been extremely bad. Overall though I have made minor
improvements, maybe not specifically in each paper but overall as a writer I have. Although I have
not and probably will never master the art of writing I know I have made myself better just in these
past few months. This semester I faced the huge inconvenience of procrastination and over time I
learned to change my method of writing; therefore, I could manage my time more wisely and put
more effort into my papers.
In the beginning of the course as each week passed I rushed to turn in my paper before the deadline.
I took a college class last semester, Spanish 1, and like English all assignments are due at 11:59
on Sunday night. Therefore, I told myself that I had plenty of time to work on my paper. Although
I knew English required more work and effort than Spanish I still could not bring myself to work in
class. During the week at school while I was supposed to be working on my paper I found...show

I finally realized I had all week to work on my paper; therefore, I finally took advantage of my
time in class. After receiving my bad grade on my first paper I knew I needed to actually put it in
effort during the week. Throughout the second paper "The Cause and Effect of Volunteering" I
started as soon as I could and by Tuesday I had a solid outline. Then, by Friday I had a nice rough
draft finished before the end of the school day. By Sunday, all I had to do was proof read and
submit which was a major relief. My paper about volunteering taught me that time management is
key in writing efficiently. I received a 90 on the rough draft and a 94 on the final copy of "The
Cause and Effect of Volunteering." My high grade on my volunteering paper gave me hope for my
writing and motivation to work on my paper as much as I could during

Personal Essay : My Personal Qualities
My Personal Qualities
Over the course, I have learned that all people are unique and have their own personal traits and
qualities. One person does not just simply fall into one category, but various categories. What is
beautiful about all of us is that we all have diverse personalities, traits and qualities. I have learned
that we should be proud of and embrace these unique qualities of ours.
As a perfectionist, I like to present my things beautifully and creatively, and it is clearly seen on
my collage. I appreciate beautiful things and this is why I got beauty/aesthetics as one of my
highest totals on the values survey. On my collage, I put a picture of a microscope, with the circular

I know and I have been told that I am a kind and sympathetic person, because I love to help people
and put a smile on their faces. Even when someone is being rude, I try to "kill them with kindness"
in return. I used the quote: "Beauty isn't about having a pretty face. It is about having a pretty mind,
a pretty heart, and most importantly, a beautiful soul". I chose to use this quote because I adore it
and I go by it. What matters most is in the inside, not on the outside. I think people sometimes, even
me, get too caught up and try too hard to look beautiful, but they don't focus on personality.
A) I expected to get artistic, creative and investigative as my results on surveys that I took, because
I already knew I had these traits as a part of my personality. However, the results from mylearning
styles survey were a little surprising to me. I got visual as my highest total score, while kinesthetic
and auditory were almost balanced out scores. The reason why I was a little surprised was that last
year, I took a survey to figure out my learning style, and I got both auditory and visual learner. The
results have their little differences, but that shows people do change over time. Learning styles can
be learned and strengthened.
I learned plenty of things from my results. My values–which I didn't see clearly–are now clear, and I
found out the little unique things that make up my personality. From my personality survey, I am
mostly artistic,

Descriptive Essay About My Cousin
My cousin, Richard, was such an inspiration to my two brothers and me. I looked up to him for
everything. He was an amazing athlete who would never give up on or off the baseball field. I
never knew how fast something could be taken away until January 12. I thought the world was
just simply punishing me, but then I realized that I couldn't control what happened even if I
wanted to. Richard played baseball growing up and was currently pitching at the Perkinston
campus at the time. He always made sure that I had a smile on my face even if he tortured me
with the "stinky sock" which came fresh off of his foot. He was always there when I just simply
needed somebody. He was somebody that I knew I could count on no matter what. Richard loved
God, family, teammates, and friends. He was a very social person who would do anything to
help somebody or just to see somebody smile. He loved to fish and to just simply be outdoors.
Our last family vacation was the Christmas before the accident happened and we all went to
Disney World. The time at Disney World was very magical because I felt like I was an absolute
princess. One afternoon, I was just a little cheerleader who couldn't wait to get to my neighbor's
house. He asked me to scream him a loud and happy cheer. I did what he asked, kissed him
goodbye, and ran off to play with my friends. I didn't think anything about that being the last time I
saw him. My life changed forever when I found out my cousin and his best friends were

Reflection Paper About English Composition
English Composition I has developed my style of writing and my skills analyzing and

articles and pieces to get the meaning of the topic. With that improved skill I was more able to
use the information given from the text and install it into my essays, with proper citation if

and tense shits. I had written comma splice and has several spelling mistakes. I looked to improve
my mechanics after writing this essay.

Writing this essay improved my knowledge of mechanics in citations and quotations.
Through taking the course, I learned to utilizes sources in a more efficient way. In writing my

I used provided different information, some provided more than others, but all sources were

created the source and decide if it was credible. This essay assignment force me to examine works in

writing to college level writing, my goal was to enhance the quality of my writing and to prepare
myself for future courses. I can take the knowledge and skills I have obtained and use it for all my
future courses as well. Also, these are life long skills that I will be able to utilize for any occasion in
my future.

How To Write A Composition Essay

  • 1. Composition 1 Reflection During my first semester here at Stout I learned lot in all my classes but especially in my Composition 1 class. As I did not have the greatest English teachers in the past this semester was very helpful to me. Not only was I able to expand my composition skills but also how to think and develop my writing even further. I could apply these new skills in my speech class as well and it gave me a better help when preparing and presenting my speeches. This was very helpful for my speech class when it came time for my final a persuasive speech. Composition 1 helped me in this way as it helped me be a better persuasive writer. I could accomplish this during several projects I did in this class. First was my profile proposal where I had to convince...show more content... One of the ways I could do this by becoming more familiar with the library database. During my high school projects, we did not need to always use scholarly sources so I usually just did Google searches for my projects but in this class I had to use scholarly sources for some of my information which was good as I learned to navigate and sort in the library's extensive database. I was also able to learn how to look at credibility. During high school I just used the first articles I could find that would help with my topic. I did not really give the credibility a second thought but in Composition 1 I learned to take the credibility of an author into account when using that source for my research. Lastly, I learned about doing academic research by doing pertinent research on my topic. Once again in high school I looked at research and thought it was good but I didn't read it thoroughly and found that sometimes I did not get the information I needed for my project. In Composition 1 I learned this as I struggled to find some relevant items sometimes but overall I could gather the correct information for my projects. In my journalism project I was also able to join the academic "conversation" on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. How My Writing Has Improved After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don't just look at grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise. Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further on in the future. My strong points as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the poems and stories we experienced this semester. Writing has been an important form of expression for me. I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult for me because I can't always seem to find the right words to say. I feel that I am more expressive and have more control over what I want to say. While this semester progressed toward its end, I have learned new writing skills and gradually learned how to engage with audiences. This skill was very useful in meeting my course goals in English 102. I believe that I have grown at organization and careful stream my thoughts as well. Before I would just begin writing my papers without any plans or organization, along with no definite idea of where I would be going with the assignments, but throughout this course I've learned that you should base your paper around your thesis statement. Another skill I took from this class was to value my classmate's responses, from their reactions made me much more aware that my main ideas Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. What I Learned In Composition Class Let's be honest, I'm not the best writer. I have had to write paper after paper for about 12 weeks. Writing isn't my strong suit and I don't think it will ever be a strong suit of mine. During the 12 weeks of composition class, I have seen improvement in my writing. Many people don't like writing but writing skills are needed in life. I'm a junior in high school and if I want to get scholarships for college, I'm going to need to write essays. Whether I become a plumber or a CEO I need writing skills. I thought that the class was fun because I knew some of my classmates. My teacher was pretty cool as well. I enjoyed being able to pick my own topics for the papers that I wrote. It was a lot easier writing about something that I was genuinely was interested in, rather than a topic that was chosen for me. I enjoyed having a minimal amount of guidelines to follow. It was nice because I could freely write my paper. I was never worried about the exact structure of the paper. It helped me broaden my horizon, when it came to writing....show more content... Firzlaff was very helpful in providing real life examples and topics to write about. She provided insight and helpful comments to make my writing better. I could tell that she was interested in helping me become a better writer. She always did her best to help me reach my full potential. She was also very understanding and kind, I didn't feel uncomfortable asking Mrs. Firzlaff questions. I find that I don't like asking questions in my other classes because I don't want to "sound dumb", but I never felt that way in Mrs. Firzlaff's class. In conclusion, I recommend taking a composition class because it gave me confidence in my writing skills. I really dislike writing but this class has helped me improve. After taking this class you'll think that writing papers are a piece of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Essay on Pride Pride The word pride in itself isn't an important word but it's meaning implies many things. There are several different definitions for pride. Pride can be referred to as a type of plant, a form of body ornamentation, or even a group of lions. The most commonly used definition of pride is being proud, or having a feeling of great accomplishment and feeling self–satisfaction. The word pride both positive and negative meanings that can be seen throughout history. In 1297AD, pride was described as "A consciousness or feeling of what is befitting or due to oneself or one's position, which prevents a person from doing what he considers to be beneath him or unworthy of him; esp. as a good quality,...show more content... Pride was believed to be "a high or overweening opinion of one's own qualities, attainments, or estate, which gives rise to a feeling and attitude of superiority over and contempt for others" (OED 2). This usage of the word pride gives it a negative cynical connotation, describing people as vain, arrogant or belittling other people. An example of this could be when someone famous thanks "all the little people" as seen as in movies and TV as a joke. They are suggesting that they are bigger or greater than others. Pride is not a negative trait to have if it doesn't get the best of you. When instilled in the young, pride is a building block of a healthy self–esteem. This is important and necessary to promote a positive self–worth. A child needs to hear that he or she has done something well. Praise will reinforce positive characteristics and does not focus on limitations as it builds pride. He or she should be proud of what they have worked for. Winning a competition is not as important as doing one's best. When someone does their best they try and strive to do even better just winning sets limits. Without a healthy self–worth, the child feels inferior and shame. When a child feels proud of their accomplishments, they feel good about themself. This will encourage the child to continue to perform at his best. Praise for accomplishments fosters pride. Praise can come from a parent, friend, teacher, or even one self. It is also important to teach the child to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Saying Goodbye Essay I never thought this day would come. I mean, I did know it was coming, but I just never thought it would be this soon. Since birth, Lina has been my older sister, my companion, my confidant, and moreover, my best friend. As years passed, I acknowledged that we were getting older, and that the date of her departure was getting closer, yet, I did not want to believe it. Since last year, she had been in the exhausting process of applying to universities, and by the end of May, the University of New Orleans (UNO) granted her with a generous scholarship. With a smile full of pride and amazement, she accepted the scholarship and reserved her space in the Psychology field in the UNO. Overshadowed by the great news of her scholarship, we failed to...show more content... Suddenly, she stood up and a warm smile lightened her face. Her eyes shone with excitement as her three best friends approached her. They talked and laughed zealously; they joked as if they had forgotten what was about to happen in less than an hour. I could not help myself from watching her. Her smile was genuine and her sight deep. Her voice was melodic while she recounted all the anecdotes the four girls had shared for six long years. She moved her hands while she talked and showed her perfectly white teeth while she laughed. There was no fear in her face, just a spark of adventure glistened at the corner of her eyes. She was about to undertake a journey to the small state of Louisiana, to the beautiful jazz city of New Orleans, and even at the verge of starting a new life on her own, she showed no signs of anxiety or uneasiness. There were so many reasons why not to cry: she was happy, she was young, she had a great opportunity to study abroad, something not everyone has, and many more that would take me a whole day to mention. However, I only needed one reason why to cry: I would no longer have her by my side. As a tremendous storm, an urge of crying overwhelmed me, and all I could do was to sit down, hide my face in my hands and let my emotions overpower me. She looked at me and frowned. I knew it hurt her to see me that way, but I couldn't stop. She came near me and hugged me, without saying a word. What Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Walking inside the typical composition class, one can expect to see the students crafting the five–paragraph essay or working on a persuasive piece as they try to argue they side of an in–class debate. Composition classes do not only work on a studentГs writing, they also get the students to think through their writing (at least the good ones do). There is a certain well–accepted style to teaching writing in the traditional composition class, and it works very well for many students and teachers. However, should the line of comfort be crossed, and if so, how? Should composition instructors grab a hold of a different writing style, making it the focal point of their pedagogies in their writing classes? More importantly, if they do, what...show more content... Of course, they are well–suited to teaching writing of any kind to their students, but could they not be more effective in doing so if they had the freedom to teach the typical Г¬five–paragraphГ® or Г¬persuasiveГ® as a piece of creative writing/literature? While BishopГs work on the topic of using creative writing in the composition classroom is crucial to any understanding of the argument, Deborah Dean, in Г¬Muddying Boundaries: Mixing Genres with Five Paragraphs,Г® also extensively explores the question I just raised, and does so by bringing in the concept of Г¬genre theory.Г® In an explanation of Г¬genre theory,Г® Dean states that, Г¬one way to make writing interesting is to create the experiences of the genre in the mind of the reader and then tweak one or twoГ® (Dean 53). Using the example of a childrenГs fairy tale to illustrate her point, Dean goes on to say that genre theory is a bit controversial, saying that Г¬if applied without thought, it could mean a return to a focus on forms and product over processГ® (Dean 53). Proponents of genre theory, however, feel just the opposite. To them, genre theory is Г¬a more logical way to empower our students, to give them the ability to write in ways that will help them be successful in the social situations in which theyГll find themselvesГ® (Dean 53). Application of genre theory in the classroom Г¬is a process because it asks students to analyze the social context Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Personal Experience: English Composition Course Focusing in self– evaluation to improve the learning process, help me to set goals and be aware of my own mistakes. When the English Composition course started, I wanted to be able to express my thoughts and my ideas in an effective way. The continuation of my education was very difficult, and I began to doubt myself when faced with the first couple of weeks. My first assignment was my most difficult assignment, and I found myself having trouble sticking to a thesis, because I had so many ideas that I did not know how to organize, and that was the primary purpose of taking this course, to learn to make my writings more organized. I choose three assignments out of the six, which were not only my favorite assignments; they are all written in classical perspective. I prefer to write in classical perspective so I may get my personal opinion to a specific audience. As I wrote each assignment I described my past experience as if I was speaking to a group telling my story. Writing with emotion as I envisioned my past experiences and how I can get my audience to feel as I felt was my goal. I wrote in classical perspective in the interest of writing my personality and voice, but it also shows how I perceive my audience. By changing the structure and organizing my thoughts I was able to shape the overall character of my work. In all three assignments I wrote in first person point of view. I choose first person view so I can express a more personal, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. This semester I learned many new things in my English 1301 class. I took this class last year but I had to drop it because I didn't have a professor explaining the work to me. And I really didn't understand what I was doing. At first, I was scared to take this class. During my high school years I wasn't that good of a writer. I thought this composition class was going to be hard since I sometimes thought it was hard in high school. My writing experience was good and sometimes bad. This semester in the composition class I had many writing strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester. My first writing weakness was deciding what to write about. I...show more content... I was really happy that I didn't have trouble filling up those pages. This contributed to my essay writing because it showed me that if I don't give and try my best I will be able to do it. It also showed me to always think positive, if I'm always thinking of negative stuff I won't be able to set my mind free and try my best in the stuff I do. Another strength I had was finding the symbols in the short story ВЁThe LotteryВЁ. When I first read it I didn't find any symbols. After Mrs. Philpott gave us the lesson on symbolism in literature I found many symbols. I also saw how those symbols give the readers clues so we could get a clue of how the ending is. I won't forget about this lesson and when I read books I'm going to pay close attention to the words. If I pay attention to that maybe I will get a taste of how the ending is going to be. This was one of the lesson I enjoyed the most. This contributed because this is something I'm going to know for the rest of my life. The third writing strength I had was that I didn't have trouble with the quotes. We had a lesson over how we had to add the quotes on the essay. That lesson helped my mind refresh from what I had learned during high school. I wasn't completely lost on this, but had to pay attention. I was a little scared because it said that if I plagiarized I would get a zero and possibly fail the semester. I personally think that we the writers don't really try to plagiarize. • 9. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the "Subjects and Strategies" textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past...show more content... This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. • 13. My English Composition Analysis Throughout English composition 1 my grades have fluctuated drastically. Some papers were surprisingly great and some have been extremely bad. Overall though I have made minor improvements, maybe not specifically in each paper but overall as a writer I have. Although I have not and probably will never master the art of writing I know I have made myself better just in these past few months. This semester I faced the huge inconvenience of procrastination and over time I learned to change my method of writing; therefore, I could manage my time more wisely and put more effort into my papers. In the beginning of the course as each week passed I rushed to turn in my paper before the deadline. I took a college class last semester, Spanish 1, and like English all assignments are due at 11:59 on Sunday night. Therefore, I told myself that I had plenty of time to work on my paper. Although I knew English required more work and effort than Spanish I still could not bring myself to work in class. During the week at school while I was supposed to be working on my paper I found...show more content... I finally realized I had all week to work on my paper; therefore, I finally took advantage of my time in class. After receiving my bad grade on my first paper I knew I needed to actually put it in effort during the week. Throughout the second paper "The Cause and Effect of Volunteering" I started as soon as I could and by Tuesday I had a solid outline. Then, by Friday I had a nice rough draft finished before the end of the school day. By Sunday, all I had to do was proof read and submit which was a major relief. My paper about volunteering taught me that time management is key in writing efficiently. I received a 90 on the rough draft and a 94 on the final copy of "The Cause and Effect of Volunteering." My high grade on my volunteering paper gave me hope for my writing and motivation to work on my paper as much as I could during Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Personal Essay : My Personal Qualities My Personal Qualities Over the course, I have learned that all people are unique and have their own personal traits and qualities. One person does not just simply fall into one category, but various categories. What is beautiful about all of us is that we all have diverse personalities, traits and qualities. I have learned that we should be proud of and embrace these unique qualities of ours. As a perfectionist, I like to present my things beautifully and creatively, and it is clearly seen on my collage. I appreciate beautiful things and this is why I got beauty/aesthetics as one of my highest totals on the values survey. On my collage, I put a picture of a microscope, with the circular flask and test tubes. I also...show more content... I know and I have been told that I am a kind and sympathetic person, because I love to help people and put a smile on their faces. Even when someone is being rude, I try to "kill them with kindness" in return. I used the quote: "Beauty isn't about having a pretty face. It is about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and most importantly, a beautiful soul". I chose to use this quote because I adore it and I go by it. What matters most is in the inside, not on the outside. I think people sometimes, even me, get too caught up and try too hard to look beautiful, but they don't focus on personality. A) I expected to get artistic, creative and investigative as my results on surveys that I took, because I already knew I had these traits as a part of my personality. However, the results from mylearning styles survey were a little surprising to me. I got visual as my highest total score, while kinesthetic and auditory were almost balanced out scores. The reason why I was a little surprised was that last year, I took a survey to figure out my learning style, and I got both auditory and visual learner. The results have their little differences, but that shows people do change over time. Learning styles can be learned and strengthened. I learned plenty of things from my results. My values–which I didn't see clearly–are now clear, and I found out the little unique things that make up my personality. From my personality survey, I am mostly artistic, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Descriptive Essay About My Cousin My cousin, Richard, was such an inspiration to my two brothers and me. I looked up to him for everything. He was an amazing athlete who would never give up on or off the baseball field. I never knew how fast something could be taken away until January 12. I thought the world was just simply punishing me, but then I realized that I couldn't control what happened even if I wanted to. Richard played baseball growing up and was currently pitching at the Perkinston campus at the time. He always made sure that I had a smile on my face even if he tortured me with the "stinky sock" which came fresh off of his foot. He was always there when I just simply needed somebody. He was somebody that I knew I could count on no matter what. Richard loved God, family, teammates, and friends. He was a very social person who would do anything to help somebody or just to see somebody smile. He loved to fish and to just simply be outdoors. Our last family vacation was the Christmas before the accident happened and we all went to Disney World. The time at Disney World was very magical because I felt like I was an absolute princess. One afternoon, I was just a little cheerleader who couldn't wait to get to my neighbor's house. He asked me to scream him a loud and happy cheer. I did what he asked, kissed him goodbye, and ran off to play with my friends. I didn't think anything about that being the last time I saw him. My life changed forever when I found out my cousin and his best friends were Get more content on HelpWriting.net

I spot a door at the end of the hall glowing and everything else becoming dark. She comes out, with the glow around her she seems more inhuman. The torn dress is ripped even more, her all black eyes looking at me. Running, away from her, I feel as if I'm in the same position, and as it time has stopped but it hasn't. The time is going by much more faster now, but I'm not going anywhere. A storage closet! I throw myself in and lock the door. I am panting, but try to control my breath for she won't hear it. " You can run but YOU CAN'T HIDE." Then, footsteps as loud as drums in this isolated part of the hospital are being heard. And they are approaching my door very closely. The doorknob begins to nudge, but another pair of footsteps can be heard approaching the hall. " Why–wha–what? Why is she f––g walking can't she just float?!" I mumble to myself in the darkness.
