"Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. Anyone who either cannot lead the common life or is so self-sufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god. "  Aristotle 384 BC – 322 BC

The original idea!
It started on the phone…1950’s Groups of technology freaks regularly hacked into public telephone mainframes and corporate voicemails for purpose of blogging and the first ever form of audio podcasts. It was used to share information between the community. Digital bulletin boards were introduced in 1979 Small servers powered by personal computers attached to a telephone modem, where one person at a time could dial in and get access. BBSes had social discussions on message boards, community-contributed file downloads, and online games Commercial online services 1979 – 2001 The first real-life wedding from a couple who met via real-time internet chat happened in the early 80s as online services grew in popularity for its color interface and lower cost. Dawn of the web 1991 - ∞ The internet existed since the late 1960s, as a network, but the world wide web became publicly available on August 6th, 1991. Instant messaging – Commercially available in 1996 People have been addicted to “tweeting” their real-time status updates (using hash tags (#) and at-signs (@)) for over 20 years. IRC, or Internet Relay Chat, was created in August 1988 by JarkkoOikarinen. It was notably used to break news on the Soviet coup attempt during the media blackout and keep tabs on the first Gulf War. Many people stayed logged into IRC constantly… using it to share links, files and keep in touch with their global network – they same way Twitter is used today. Bit torrent & Social Media Sharing People have been addicted to “tweeting” their real-time status updates (using hash tags (#) and at-signs (@)) for over 20 years. IRC, or Internet Relay Chat, was created in August 1988 by JarkkoOikarinen. Social Networking……1997 Six degrees was launched in mid 1997 as the first social networking site allowing users to create profiles and make friends. The likes of friendster(2003), MySpace(2004), Facebook (2007) followed in the ensuing social networking frenzy Real time collaboration (2009) The likes of googlewave and google docs has allowed users to share information in realtime.
Traditional vs Social media To reach 50 million users, it took: · Radio: 38 years. · TV: 13 years. · Internet: 4 years. · The iPod: 3 years To reach 100 million users, it took Facebook fewer than 9 months.
Characteristics of Social Media On a digital platform (web, mobile web, intranet etc) Is not a one way street. Usually personal Can be shared
