  2. Tomato is an important cash crop among vegetable growers in the province of Tarlac.
  3. Tomato fits easily into different cropping systems, has high economic value and fruits can be processed, dried, canned and bottled. Moreover, tomatoes contribute to a healthy, well- balanced diet primarily.
  4. What are Tomatoes? Tomato is classified as a vegetable. However, botanically speaking, tomato is a fruit of the tomato vine. Hence, tomato is both a vegetable and a fruit. Although tomatoes are fruits in a botanical sense, they don't have the dessert quality sweetness of other fruits.

  35. • With this, TCA is facing another challenge of tapping interested partners to engage in similar endeavour on commercial scale with the end of considering other varieties with different traits to meet growers and target markets diversified demand that can be adopted even in the village level to further improve the level of farmers’ household productivity.
  36. DA technicians, farmer leaders, Technology and Livelihood Educators, private growers, processors, investors, among others from the North Central Luzon were gathered purposely to organize a technical working or facilitating group.
  37. These efforts led to the formation of the North Central Luzon Tomato Stakeholders Association (NOCELTSA) that serves as technical working group to facilitate the promotion of off season tomato technologies and at the same time help assist in serving the prevailing and potential needs in the service area
  38. Through NOCELTSA, series of Lakbay Aral was held to explore different tomato processing opportunities... The NOCELTSA officers who attended the Trainers’ Training on Tomato Processing were tapped for product development and promotion

TOMATO JAM Materials needed/Ingredients: 1 cup chopped tomatoes ¾ cup refined sugar 1 tbsp calamansi juice Procedure: Select sound ripe tomatoes Wash and blanch for 2-3 minutes Peel and remove the seeds Cut into small portions and chop finely To every cup of chopped pulp, add ¾ cup sugar Cook to jam consistency Pour in sterilized bottles while hot. Remove air bubbles and seal.
