The document summarizes Plan Ceibal English, a project in Uruguay that provides English language education to primary students using remote teachers via video conferencing. It began as a pilot in 2012 with 20 schools and has expanded steadily. By 2015 it aims to include 4,800 classes and 120,000 students. Remote teachers conduct the first weekly class, while classroom teachers conduct the second two classes after receiving English training. The project addresses the lack of English teachers in Uruguay and leverages the country's existing One Laptop Per Child infrastructure. Challenges include maintaining methodology and quality as the project expands nationwide.

8. Ceibal English project overview
• In 2012 the British Council was selected by Plan Ceibal to
project manage Ceibal en Inglés (Ceibal English), delivering
remote teaching via video conferencing in Uruguayan primary
schools.
• Goal = provide access to English language learning to primary
students (grades 4-6) and their teachers all over Uruguay.
• Because of a lack of trained/qualified English teachers, Ceibal
English uses remote teachers (RTs) via video conferencing
• Additionally, classroom teachers (CTs) are taught English via
moderator-supported English course (LearnEnglish Pathways)
