1. Language that needs to be taught
• Figure, amount, number, percentage, proportion, twice, halve, respectively, than
that of, than those of, a high of, hit a record high
• collocations for increase, rise, decrease, fall, fluctuate, what is a sharp rise or fall
• prepositions for rise and fall
• Maps, plans, processes
• Pie charts: comprise, be responsible for, account for
• Tables: top the table, ranked second, most popular
• Past perfect, future predictions, past to present charts, passive, participle clauses
• Language for comparison: comparatives, superlatives
• Common mistakes: was increased, 5 millions (file from old hard drive can possibly
help)

2. • New discovery (best syllabus):
• Work on intro of all numerical charts
• Work on overview of static charts
• Work on overview of dynamic charts
• Tell students that all charts are the same (Simon how to teach ielts-
newsletter 20)
• Practice to convert charts to each other
• Work on language in these ways:
• Language foe comparisons and trends
• Language for age groups, questionnaires, energy consumption

3. • After converting charts move on to static charts (first language of
comparison, then language for a specific chart for example age
groups, then a 9-sentence report based on 9 questions-Simon
newsletter 21)
• Do the same for dynamic charts
• Move on to process, plans and maps (first intro, then overview, then
language and samples for each)
