Bookkeeper – Being Accountable
The main role of a bookkeeper is to keep a company or organizations
financial records in order. For them to be able to carry out this job
effectively they must have detailed oriented skills, that allow them to
keep up to day with the company’s expenditure, income, payroll and tax
requirements.
When it comes to hiring a bookkeeper for your business you need to be
objective. Also as you look through their CV’s there are certain skills
that yours should have. Below we offer you 5 tips to help ensure that
you hire the right person to keep your accounts in order now and in the
future.
Tip 1 – Are They Knowledgeable?
Do they have a basic understanding of accounting and how it fits overall
in to the “big picture”? When it comes to you hiring a bookkeeper
choose someone who has a basic understanding of the difference
between assets and liabilities, equity and income, cost of goods sold and
your companies expense accounts.
2. Tip 2 – Are They Available?
You need to make sure that not only are they available but can be
depended upon to ensure that your bookkeeping is kept up to date. A
good bookkeeper will make sure that all information is input regularly
so that any reports you need can be produced in a timely manner.
Should they be trying to squeeze your work in with any other
responsibilities they may have then they won’t be able to focus on yours
as much as they should.
Tip 3 – Are They Accountable?
You want your bookkeeper to be someone who keeps you accountable.
Should they have checks or deposits that they aren’t sure of, then you
want them to be willing to hold you accountable for these. You need
them to ensure that they get good information to keep your records in
order. What you don’t want to do is hire someone who just decides that
things be put in the miscellaneous column because they don’t know
where else it should go.
Tip 4 – Are They Competent?
As most companies now prefer to keep their books on computers rather
than in ledgers, it is important that you ensure you hire a bookkeeper
who is able to use a computerised bookkeeping program.
Tip 5 – Are They Familiar With Your Industry?
Hiring a bookkeeper that is familiar with your industry will help to
reduce the amount of time they need to spend settling into their position.
In turn they will ensure that more details are provided.
