The Epistles of the Bible are all found in the New Testament. They include 21 of the New Testament’s 27 books, extending from Romans to Jude. Thirteen of these Epistles were written by the apostle Paul: Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. Within this group of Pauline Epistles is a subgroup labeled the Prison Epistles (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon) so-called because they were written during Paul’s two-year house arrest in Rome (Acts 28:30–31). The Pastoral Epistles (1 and 2 Timothy and Titus) were written to church leaders and include many teachings regarding practices within the early church.Following these writings are eight General Epistles (sometimes called Catholic Epistles, since they were written to a “universal” audience) that include Hebrews, James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2, and 3 John, and Jude. The author of Hebrews is unknown (though many have historically attributed it to Paul or one of Paul’s associates). James was one of the earliest New Testament writings and was written by James, the half-brother of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:7). The apostle Peter wrote 1 and 2 Peter. The apostle John (the same author of the Gospel of John and Revelation) wrote 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John. The short Epistle of Jude was written by Jude, another half-brother of Jesus (Jude 1:1).All of the known authors of the Epistles are either an apostle (Paul, Peter, John) or a family member of Jesus (James, Jude). Each of these individuals had a unique calling from the Lord Jesus that included writing letters to others. These letters, inspired by the Holy Spirit, are preserved as part of the New Testament’s writings today.Read more:http://www.gotquestions.org/what-is-an-epistle.html#ixzz3eBIfeAM6

Gaius, John’s friend. The Epistle of 3 John is addressed to a man named Gaius who was a member of an unnamed church that John had the oversight of (3 John 1:1). John calls this man a “dear friend” (verses 1, 2, and 11). Gaius is commended for his hospitality to traveling preachers of the gospel (verses 5, 6 and 8); for his faithfulness (verse 5); for his love (verse 6); and for his walking in the truth (verse 3). According to tradition this Gaius may be the one whom John appointed as bishop of Pergamum.Gotquestions.org
Verse 12 introduces another man named Demetrius, who according to the Apostolic Constitutions VII.46.9 was ordained by John as bishop of Philadelphia (now Amman, Jordan).[17] Demetrius was probably a member of the group of missionaries discussed earlier in the letter, and 3 John likely serves as a recommendation letter to Gaius about Demetrius.[17] Dodd

Even today, many such powerhouses exist. Here was one even in the first century, closing doors to even the great apostle John’s representatives.

Several stalwarts in their faith – Martin Luther, the apostles, Jesus himself have demonstrated that even though the world accused and abused them, the truth stood for them even after their death when their lives made maximum impact. In many ways, maybe less dramatic, but in our lives, the truth stands for us. We never need to be afraid of it.
Truth always wins. When truth speaks for you, that is the biggest testimony.
truth is like a lion. you don't have to defend it. Let it loose, it will defend itself. - Augustus of Hippo

How can we ensure that our prosperity of soul is ahead of material prosperity?
What was Diotrephes’ motive for being a key church leader derailing the church? What challenges can it create?
Do we see our churches today getting similarly derailed? How do we respond in situations when such leaders take over?
Gaius and Demetrius had believers speak for them. How can we be good examples to others in the midst of these challenges?
