Should Regulations Regarding Payment of College Athletes Be
Changed?
Introduction
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
regulations are tough when it comes to payment of college
athletes. The athletes are not supposed to receive any payment
for the sports other than the normal scholarship offered their
respective universities, and illegibility criteria for participation
are not easy either (ncca.org). Over and above having better

participate in a sport. Also, athletes are not required to have
used their athletics skill for pay in any form in that sport
(ncca.org). As a result, there has been a major outcry regarding
failure to compensate college athletes in what is viewed as high
level of exploitation, by the universities and other companies
that use them to advertise their products in commercials. This
is a clear indication that a problem exists and NCCA should
review these rules; ‘Collegiate Athletes need to be paid”.
NCCA rules
NCCA is the governing body for athletic programs for many
colleges and universities in the United States established early
1900s. In 1973, the NCAA members adopted a special
convention with three divisions of schools; I, II and III
(ncca.org). According to NCAA rules, schools under Division I
and II can offer scholarships to athletes involved in sports,
while schools under Division III may not offer scholarships.
Collegiate athletes in the US are supposed to benefit with this
scholarship, rather than monetary rewards.
Statement of problems
Exploitation
According to US News.com, college sports generate annual
revenue of up to $11 billion from sources such as ticket sales,
sponsorship rights, and broadcast rights sale. This revenue goes
in to the pockets of few including coaches, organizers, and
administrators and many others. Further, major achievements
like emerging national champions is not rewarding to athletes,
the real beneficiaries are mainly the sponsors, broadcasters and
NCAA in the long run (npr.org). NCAA rules are therefore
exploitative (Miller, A., 2012), considering the effort and time
invested by the student in the sporting activities (Edelman, M.,
2014). Moreover, some of the universities that formed intra-
collegiate sports competitions are at the forefront supporting
college athletic amateurism.
Another thing is that the scholarship NCAA is so emphatic
about is not guaranteed over the four years of study. Rather, it’s
subject to yearly renewal after meeting a number of conditions
(Johnson, D. & Acquaviva, J., 2012).
When companies advertise they products using popular
individuals, they mostly attract attention of the markets. This is
so much the same with sportswear manufacturers or traders
utilizing popular sportsmen to advertise their products, making
huge sales and profits. The persons appearing in these
commercials are supposed to be paid by the respective
companies. However, this is not the case with the collegiate
athletes, who big companies such as Nike, Rebook, and Flea
among others take advantage of to advertise their products, for
no pay. This is exploitation.
Poverty
The lifestyle of a collegiate athlete does not reflect their strong
achievements. Because NCAA regulations are strictly
compensation by sponsorship, students especially from poor
backgrounds suffer in the colleges despite their role in
university sports being a major industry generating millions of
in revenue to the institutions. According to miller (2012)
collegiate athletes live in sustained poverty despite.
Challenged over this matter, NCAA argues that sporting by
student sports are supposed to be a component of their tutelage,
for which they are receiving scholarship, not a form of student
employment for which they should be paid for (ncca.org).
According to NCCA, paying athletes for sporting would beat its
purpose in education (Johnson & Acquaviva, 2012).
Corruption
One of the negative aspects resulting from failure to pay college
athletes is breeding of corruption. Research reveals that despite
the tough regulations and restrictions of payment by NCAA,
throughout its existent, collegiate athletes have received
monetary compensation beyond education scholarship.
According to Slack survey (25) as quoted by (Johnson &
Acquaviva, 2012), this illegal compensation has taken place
over the years with college athletes like Reggie Bush plus
others receiving secrets rewards.
The form signed between an institution and a student on the
scholarship is a form of contract between the two parties. It is
noted that while NCAA insists that education is the primary
reason for athlete scholarship, investigations reveal that
education is not all that prioritized, indeed, they get sub-
standard educational experience. According to Johnson &
Acquaviva (2012), student athletes spend most of time in
practices and at times are forced to skip essential lessons to
attend tournaments. Some of them will engage in corrupt means,
such as doctoring results, to meet the basic minimum
requirements for the scholarship.
Conclusion
The question of whether college athletes should be paid more
above college scholarship date back the time of inception of
intercollegiate sports competition. Arguments for either side
have been presented, by different parties at different times.
However, NCCA is not able to let loose its rules regarding this
issue, and it is firm on no more compensation beyond
scholarship. In this paper I have analyzed the problems resultant
of this stand; exploitation, poverty and corruption. Since
college athletics generate lot revenue, these are challenges that
can easily be eliminated by simply paying college athletes.

Should Regulations Regarding Payment of College Athletes Be
Changed?
Introduction
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
regulations are tough when it comes to payment of college
athletes. The athletes are not supposed to receive any payment
for the sports other than the normal scholarship offered their
respective universities, and illegibility criteria for participation
are not easy either (ncca.org).. Over and above having better
grades to join the university, there are other conditions
especially on matters payment. For instance, one is not required
to have taken pay, or the promise of the same pay in order to
participate in a sport. Also, athletes are not required to have
used their athletics skill for pay in any form in that sport
(ncca.org).
Thesis statement
“Regulations Regarding Payment of College Athletes needs to
be changed”.
Recently, there has been a wide concern over compensation of
college athletes beyond their sport scholarships. Failure to pay
them is viewed as exploitation of the college athletes on
grounds of amateurism. NCAA regulations restrict
compensation of college athletes to educational scholarship. As
college sports are a major industry, generating lot revenue to
colleges, many argue that the athletes need to be paid for their
labour. This is not implementable for some of the major
hindrances, primarily the tough NCAA regulations. This
research looks at the importance of paying collegiate athletes. It
discusses the view “Regulations Regarding Payment of College
Athletes needs to be changed”.
NCCA is the governing body for athletic programs for many
colleges and universities in the United States. It has been in
existence since early 1900s. The members of NCAA
(universities and colleges) in 1973 adopted a special convention
with three divisions of schools; I, II and III (ncca.org).
According to NCAA rules, schools under Division I and II can
offer scholarships to athletes involved in sports, while schools
under Division III may not offer scholarships. This is how the
collegiate athletes in the US are supposed to benefit from their
sports activities but not monetary rewards. As a result collegiate
athletes live in sustained poverty despite generating much
revenue with their sports. Challenged over this matter, NCAA
argues that sporting by student athletes is a component of their
tutelage, for which they are receiving scholarship, rather than a
professional employment for which they should receive
monetary compensation (ncca.org).
Statement of problems
This decision by NCAA has caused major outcry from those
who considers they stand as exploitative (Miller, A., 2012).
According to US News.com, college sports generate annual
revenue of up to $11 billion from sources such as ticket sales,
sponsorship rights, and broadcast rights sale. This revenue goes
in to the pockets of a few including coaches and administrators.
Also, when these teams emerge national champions, all they do
is celebrate the national title while the real beneficiaries of this
outcome are their sponsors, broadcasters and NCAA in the long
run (npr.org). This paper therefore addresses the problem of
collegiate athletes’ lack of compensation by NCCA. Is the
NCCA exploiting the athletes? Are the organizers and NCCA
justified in referring to college athletes as amateurs? Will a
change in NCCA regulations regarding this problem solve it?
I think NCCA is highly and negatively exploiting the student’s
athletes. This is because the sporting activity is a major
employer of coachers, organizers and administrators among
others. Also, much revenue is generated for the colleges and
universities. While students receive the benefit in kind, that is
in terms scholarship, exploitation is seen where companies
especially sport wear for example Nike, Rebook, Flea among
others, are taking use them to advertise their products in
commercials, while the get nothing for it. Indeed, NCCA forbids
this.
Secondly, it’s ironical that some of the universities that formed
intra
-collegiate sports competitions, are now at the forefront
supporting college athletic amateurism. The same schools do
not offer any athletic scholarships.
The question of collegiate amateurism is also key. According to
Edelman, M. (2014) it meanslack of remuneration for students
athletes for their sporting activities. NCAA emphasizes that
they should not receive any payment as they are just students
and not employees of their respective colleges/ universities so
as to receive salary. According to them, the primary role of
students being at the institutions is education, not sports; hence
they should remain as collegiate amateurs. This idea was
adopted by college authorizes at the end of 19th century, as a
measure to maintain educational integrity of schools, by
technically not compensating the athletes in cash.
Why do the collegiate athletes need to be compensated? One of
the reasons is to ensure they are covered for any possible
danger. During sporting activities, the athletes are likely to
suffer injuries, hence the need for compensation that can pay
their life insurances as well, leave alone their medical expenses.
Conclusion
This paper has presented a thesis statement regarding on the
need to change rules denying payment to collegiate athletes.
The question asked is whether NCCA rules that govern these
athletes compensation can help alleviate the problem. The paper
has looked at the problems that need to be addressed in order to
answer this question. These are: whether NCCA and other
organizers are exploiting these athletes, whether collegiate
amateurism is justified and what is the need to pay these
athletes.

Should regulations regarding payment of college athletes be
changed?
The topic that I selected is Should Regulations Regarding
Payment of College Athletes Be Changed? I chose this topic
because the regulations regarding payment of college athletes
should be changed. I say this because college students that once
played athletics a payment form some of the companies could
help the athletes complete their college program before they
decide to go to the professional league. Also it could take care
of their need while they are in college.
I think that companies take advantage of the college athletes by
using them to be in commercials, also using them to advertise
different items. When these company use actors or their
counterpart professional athlete they get paid a very healthy rate
on top of what they already get paid.
The audience that I chose is NCAA and companies that use
college athletes to promote sports and athlete gear like Nike,
Adidas, Rebook, K-Swiss, Under Armor, Flea, New Balance,
Asics. The NCAA along with EA Sports has the decision
making power to make the change in the regulation regarding
the payment of the college athletes. Adidas, Flea, K-Swiss, New
Balance, Nike, Rebook, and Under Armor are all companies that
are taking advantage of the fact that they don’t have to pay the
college athletes to adverting.
In this study I have gathered some documents that talk’s about
college athletes being paid for being an athlete. Also I have
gathered some statistics that would state the average amount
professional athletes make a year to compare to the amount that
a college student will accumulate in a year.
I plan find out: Why college athletes are not being paid for their
services? What type of effect it would have on the athletes if
they were to be paid for their services? Would the college
graduation rate go up or down if the athletes were to be paid for
performing.
In my research I plan use epcohost as one of my mane sources
of research and documents from sporting sites.

  • 1. Grader Feedback 8/5/14 6:00 PM Please write your essay without the false separations. It should be one continous essay. Don't announce. Your thesis statement should be the last sentence of your introduction. The background information should be in a separate paragraph. Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence that identifies the each of the problems. Each problem is to have a one or two paragraphs that elaborate on the problems. If you do this, there is no need to announce statement of problems. Is the second problem that NCCA is negatively exploiting student athletes? If so, state that clearly, not I think that. There is no such word as secondly or ironical. Is that another problem? The question of collegiate amateurism is a problem? That reads like you are still providing background information. Please don't begin your conclusion as you have. Simply state what you have said but in different words, not announce what you did already. You fail to offer a solution. RUNNING HEAD: PAYMENT OF COLLEGE ATHLETES1 PAYMENT OF COLLEGE ATHLETES2 PAYMENT OF COLLEGE ATHLETES Kelvin Glenn Strayer University Dr. Georgene Bess Montgomery July 20, 2014 Should Regulations Regarding Payment of College Athletes Be Changed?
  • 2. Introduction The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations are tough when it comes to payment of college athletes. The athletes are not supposed to receive any payment for the sports other than the normal scholarship offered their respective universities, and illegibility criteria for participation are not easy either (ncca.org). Over and above having better grades to join the university, there are other conditions especially on matters payment. For instance, one is not required to have taken pay, or the promise of the same in order to participate in a sport. Also, athletes are not required to have used their athletics skill for pay in any form in that sport (ncca.org). As a result, there has been a major outcry regarding failure to compensate college athletes in what is viewed as high level of exploitation, by the universities and other companies that use them to advertise their products in commercials. This is a clear indication that a problem exists and NCCA should review these rules; ‘Collegiate Athletes need to be paid”. NCCA rules NCCA is the governing body for athletic programs for many colleges and universities in the United States established early 1900s. In 1973, the NCAA members adopted a special convention with three divisions of schools; I, II and III (ncca.org). According to NCAA rules, schools under Division I and II can offer scholarships to athletes involved in sports, while schools under Division III may not offer scholarships. Collegiate athletes in the US are supposed to benefit with this scholarship, rather than monetary rewards. Statement of problems Exploitation According to US News.com, college sports generate annual revenue of up to $11 billion from sources such as ticket sales, sponsorship rights, and broadcast rights sale. This revenue goes
  • 3. in to the pockets of few including coaches, organizers, and administrators and many others. Further, major achievements like emerging national champions is not rewarding to athletes, the real beneficiaries are mainly the sponsors, broadcasters and NCAA in the long run (npr.org). NCAA rules are therefore exploitative (Miller, A., 2012), considering the effort and time invested by the student in the sporting activities (Edelman, M., 2014). Moreover, some of the universities that formed intra- collegiate sports competitions are at the forefront supporting college athletic amateurism. Another thing is that the scholarship NCAA is so emphatic about is not guaranteed over the four years of study. Rather, it’s subject to yearly renewal after meeting a number of conditions (Johnson, D. & Acquaviva, J., 2012). When companies advertise they products using popular individuals, they mostly attract attention of the markets. This is so much the same with sportswear manufacturers or traders utilizing popular sportsmen to advertise their products, making huge sales and profits. The persons appearing in these commercials are supposed to be paid by the respective companies. However, this is not the case with the collegiate athletes, who big companies such as Nike, Rebook, and Flea among others take advantage of to advertise their products, for no pay. This is exploitation. Poverty The lifestyle of a collegiate athlete does not reflect their strong achievements. Because NCAA regulations are strictly compensation by sponsorship, students especially from poor backgrounds suffer in the colleges despite their role in university sports being a major industry generating millions of in revenue to the institutions. According to miller (2012) collegiate athletes live in sustained poverty despite. Challenged over this matter, NCAA argues that sporting by student sports are supposed to be a component of their tutelage, for which they are receiving scholarship, not a form of student employment for which they should be paid for (ncca.org).
  • 4. According to NCCA, paying athletes for sporting would beat its purpose in education (Johnson & Acquaviva, 2012). Corruption One of the negative aspects resulting from failure to pay college athletes is breeding of corruption. Research reveals that despite the tough regulations and restrictions of payment by NCAA, throughout its existent, collegiate athletes have received monetary compensation beyond education scholarship. According to Slack survey (25) as quoted by (Johnson & Acquaviva, 2012), this illegal compensation has taken place over the years with college athletes like Reggie Bush plus others receiving secrets rewards. The form signed between an institution and a student on the scholarship is a form of contract between the two parties. It is noted that while NCAA insists that education is the primary reason for athlete scholarship, investigations reveal that education is not all that prioritized, indeed, they get sub- standard educational experience. According to Johnson & Acquaviva (2012), student athletes spend most of time in practices and at times are forced to skip essential lessons to attend tournaments. Some of them will engage in corrupt means, such as doctoring results, to meet the basic minimum requirements for the scholarship. Conclusion The question of whether college athletes should be paid more above college scholarship date back the time of inception of intercollegiate sports competition. Arguments for either side have been presented, by different parties at different times. However, NCCA is not able to let loose its rules regarding this issue, and it is firm on no more compensation beyond scholarship. In this paper I have analyzed the problems resultant of this stand; exploitation, poverty and corruption. Since college athletics generate lot revenue, these are challenges that

Challenged over this matter, NCAA argues that sporting by student athletes is a component of their tutelage, for which they are receiving scholarship, rather than a professional employment for which they should receive monetary compensation (ncca.org). Statement of problems This decision by NCAA has caused major outcry from those who considers they stand as exploitative (Miller, A., 2012). According to US News.com, college sports generate annual revenue of up to $11 billion from sources such as ticket sales, sponsorship rights, and broadcast rights sale. This revenue goes in to the pockets of a few including coaches and administrators. Also, when these teams emerge national champions, all they do is celebrate the national title while the real beneficiaries of this outcome are their sponsors, broadcasters and NCAA in the long run (npr.org). This paper therefore addresses the problem of collegiate athletes’ lack of compensation by NCCA. Is the NCCA exploiting the athletes? Are the organizers and NCCA justified in referring to college athletes as amateurs? Will a change in NCCA regulations regarding this problem solve it? I think NCCA is highly and negatively exploiting the student’s
  • 8. athletes. This is because the sporting activity is a major employer of coachers, organizers and administrators among others. Also, much revenue is generated for the colleges and universities. While students receive the benefit in kind, that is in terms scholarship, exploitation is seen where companies especially sport wear for example Nike, Rebook, Flea among others, are taking use them to advertise their products in commercials, while the get nothing for it. Indeed, NCCA forbids this. Secondly, it’s ironical that some of the universities that formed intra -collegiate sports competitions, are now at the forefront supporting college athletic amateurism. The same schools do not offer any athletic scholarships. The question of collegiate amateurism is also key. According to Edelman, M. (2014) it meanslack of remuneration for students athletes for their sporting activities. NCAA emphasizes that they should not receive any payment as they are just students and not employees of their respective colleges/ universities so as to receive salary. According to them, the primary role of students being at the institutions is education, not sports; hence they should remain as collegiate amateurs. This idea was adopted by college authorizes at the end of 19th century, as a measure to maintain educational integrity of schools, by technically not compensating the athletes in cash. Why do the collegiate athletes need to be compensated? One of the reasons is to ensure they are covered for any possible danger. During sporting activities, the athletes are likely to suffer injuries, hence the need for compensation that can pay their life insurances as well, leave alone their medical expenses. Conclusion
  • 9. This paper has presented a thesis statement regarding on the need to change rules denying payment to collegiate athletes. The question asked is whether NCCA rules that govern these athletes compensation can help alleviate the problem. The paper has looked at the problems that need to be addressed in order to answer this question. These are: whether NCCA and other organizers are exploiting these athletes, whether collegiate amateurism is justified and what is the need to pay these athletes. ReferencesEdelman, M. Kelvin Glenn Strayer University Dr. Georgene Bess Montgomery July 20, 2014 Should regulations regarding payment of college athletes be changed? The topic that I selected is Should Regulations Regarding Payment of College Athletes Be Changed? I chose this topic because the regulations regarding payment of college athletes should be changed. I say this because college students that once played athletics a payment form some of the companies could help the athletes complete their college program before they decide to go to the professional league. Also it could take care of their need while they are in college.
  • 11. I think that companies take advantage of the college athletes by using them to be in commercials, also using them to advertise different items. When these company use actors or their counterpart professional athlete they get paid a very healthy rate on top of what they already get paid. The audience that I chose is NCAA and companies that use college athletes to promote sports and athlete gear like Nike, Adidas, Rebook, K-Swiss, Under Armor, Flea, New Balance, Asics. The NCAA along with EA Sports has the decision making power to make the change in the regulation regarding the payment of the college athletes. Adidas, Flea, K-Swiss, New Balance, Nike, Rebook, and Under Armor are all companies that are taking advantage of the fact that they don’t have to pay the college athletes to adverting. In this study I have gathered some documents that talk’s about college athletes being paid for being an athlete. Also I have gathered some statistics that would state the average amount professional athletes make a year to compare to the amount that a college student will accumulate in a year. I plan find out: Why college athletes are not being paid for their services? What type of effect it would have on the athletes if they were to be paid for their services? Would the college graduation rate go up or down if the athletes were to be paid for performing. In my research I plan use epcohost as one of my mane sources of research and documents from sporting sites. References Should regulations regarding payment of college athletes be changed?
