2. The purpose of making a music video
• The purpose of making a music video is because it represents where
the location of the song is and if there was no music videos then
people wouldn’t understand what's fully going on in the song.
• They make more money to make a video for people to buy and its to
promote it.
• Music videos are made and used as a marketing device intended to
promote sale of music recordings.
3. The purpose of making a music video
The main purpose of music videos was primarily to just promote the
sale of recordings as well as for the artist. Many music videos interpret
images and scenes from the song’s lyrics while others take a more
approach. Usually music videos are to interest people and tell a story
but the song needs to fit well with the video. Whatever the lyrics say it
should link with the video otherwise no one would understand what's
going on. Michael Jackson’s thriller is a 14 minute horror themed
music video released on December 2, 1983. It was MTV first world
video. It was voted as the most influential pop music video of all time.
Thriller was one of the first short films with a story line that has a
beginning middle and end. As its 14 minutes it would mean it showed
a lot of content. It was so long to film the video as there are many
locations and characters. But as its voted the best pop video in the
world it then means it was worth it and they made profit back.
4. The purpose of making music videos
examples.
• People make music videos to make more money and to make the
audience entertained. Nathan Sykes has a sex scene to attract the
audience.
• Also Justin Bieber is a massive artist and he has a really big song
called what do you mean and they both show there body Justin
Bieber shows it because all the girls get
attracted to it and more people buy his song
and music video.
5. My story Krept Konan
The purpose why this song was called my story
was firstly because the location of the area
looks like a poor area where a lot of gangs are
about. What they both wear in the film
represents that there in the hood.
In the beginning of the song he gets attacked by
two teenagers that shows that its gang related.
Halfway through the song his dad gets shot
trying to protect his son and dies and his son
says in the song that he is sorry and it should
have been him lying there dead. But the whole
song shows what he goes through in his life and
that people also use stereotype in the video
because black people used to get a lot of hate
and they don’t have a lot of money. Straight
outta Compton gives a great example.
6. Synergy
Synergy is the release of a brand across different media
platforms.
Media institution use synergistic techniques in order to in
case there brands image and also expand their target
audience. For example star wars has a film, video game,
books, soundtrack. Eminem has used synergy over
different platforms. This made him become more
noticeable. Eminem had a film called 8 mile which was
about his younger life this is a very well known popular
film. Eminem wanted to share himself in a different way
so that he could become bigger and more known.
Eminem is one of the biggest rappers at the moment in
the world he is also a main man in a film about his way of
life and how he started to rap. He also has a book for his
fans that’s called the way I am.
7. Synergy
• Eminem isn’t the only one that release a brand across different
platforms so may people do it to make themselves bigger. Usually
people would expect artist to try and make themselves more known
but films do the same. Harry potter started as a book then it became
one of the biggest films ever created, then there were games and
even soundtracks there have been 8 movies which is a lot and every
single one people have been excited about. If someone is only
interested in watching movies and they don’t know about what else
harry potter do it will make them more interested to play a game
using the harry potter characters.
8. Representation
Representation means when they recreate reality to tell an audience.
Representation means it has the ability to suggest that some media
represents certain images and stories. It can also mean that it’s a
presentation to the mind in form to an idea or an image.
Representation uses stereotypes because for example Krept and Konan
wrote a song with a huge house and girls half naked so it makes more people
attracted and buy the song. Its also a soundtrack from a film called
Brotherhood. Music videos that show rich things such as nice cars, girls that
are attractive, money and famous people really attract audiences. It changes
the way people think about real life and how they think it can be like that
when they want it to. For example in fast and furious there are girls in bikinis
and expensive cars.
9. Male Gaze theory
Using women as visual pleasure for a male audience.
Personal identify is finding oneself reflected within another character
or celebrity – such as an artist or an actor.
Some people just look to see if in the music video there is a sex part or
on the cover of a book people become attracted and buy it. So a lot of
music videos lately are just romantic and about love and kissing.
Nathan Sykes has made most of his songs about either chasing girls or
falling in love. Which people become attracted to.
10. Male gaze theory
Miley Cyrus shows her body
out for everyone to see the
new her and to get attracted
to her to buy her album and
music videos. It’s a good way
to make money.
11. Music video now to the olden times
• Some artist spend millions of dollars to make there music video stand out and be
the best it usually pays out and they make there profit back but the artist would
have to think if it’s a wise choice to spend million on one music video and if its
going to be worth it. The Most Expensive Video Ever was Scream by Michael
Jackson at a budget of $7,000,000 which was a famous song as Michael Jackson is
a very famous singer. In the last 30 years music videos have changed so much its
gone to a lot of videos being black and white to now being coloured and bright.
Music videos that come out today attract a younger audience however 20-30
years ago it would be an older audience. Music videos that have been released in
the last few years are usually about sex and money which is what attracts
audiences nowadays. In the video of scream by Michael Jackson its black and
white as this song was release 1995 and it started to change a few years later.
Most music videos nowadays are becoming repetitive by using the same
elements.
12. Promotion to an artist
• It allows the artist to become more well known and get more
publicity.
Eminem is the biggest rapper in the world and yelawolf is a good singer
but he is no where near as big as Eminem and not everyone knows who
yelawolf is. They both do a song called best friend Eminem helps
yelawolf become bigger because Eminem is in the song and people see
that he is becoming bigger. Eminem promoted
yelawolf for more people to see him but there both
different one is a rapper and one is a singer. Now
more people know who he is.
