providing the means to open up the networks to the
carried applications in order to meet the diverse
application requirements, including but not limited to:
 Bandwidth
 Performance: latency, jitter, and etc.
 Reliability: availability, packet loss, diversity, and etc

• APPLE and GOOGLE’s open OS and its impact
 Open OS of IPhone/IPad and Android led to paradigm shift
on how applications are developed
 This led to the new expectations from the Open OS devise
users
• Cloud service providers who own the networks viewing
“the network” as the differentiator
 Open network is the nature evolution of Open OS
movement
 Open network is perhaps the only path can lead to the
“Killer APP”

10. Open Networking Foundation

• Formed in March 2011 with support from major global
carriers and service/content providers, software and
hardware vendors, and research institutions
• It only purpose is promoting a new approach to
networking called Software-Defined Networking
(SDN).
 SDN allows owners and operators of networks to control
and manage their networks to best serve their users' needs.
 ONF’s first priority is to develop and use the OpenFlow
protocol.

• Cross Stratum Optimization architecture and
framework is the product of the above mentioned
technical development trend
• CSO work is the technical leader in the open network
movement
 It is an enabler for the vision of Cloud 2.0
 It is in line with the vision of SDN
Openflow protocol can be a part of the CSO protocol
families
Newer generation protocols can also be utilized to
achieve the CSO vision, e.g. Hyperflow
