9 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1 Nursing Role and Scope Cira N. Perez Florida National
University Nursing Department Prof. Lourdes Castaneda October 29th, 2019 WEEK 9
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 2 Q1: Introduction Nurses are important at all levels of healthcare
facilities, providing patient care services and supplying doctor’s important information they
need for the benefit of the patients’ well-being. The nurseand the patient spend a lot of time
together; the nurse assessing and observing the patient, helpingthe doctor create a care
routine, and carrying out that care routine with medication and treatment administration.
Nurses use a variety of equipment for monitoring and performing their duties in order to
achieve this. Furthermore, they do diagnostic tests, take vitals and interpret the results for
the doctors. It never ends there yet; after a medical diagnosis, nurses assist the patients and
caregivers understand the diagnosis and how to handle it(Carlisle, 2014). For decades,
these were the assumed roles of the nurse. However though, considering the demands of
today’s evolving health care systems and the complexity of patient care, the modern-day
nurse has been more equipped with both medical and nonmedical skills to deal with this
paradigm shift as far as quality modern healthcare service provision is concerned. The 2014
Institute of Medicine (IOM) follow-up report ‘To Err Is Human’ documented major
shortcomings in the quality of healthcare service provision that existed in the past six
decades, by highlighting the role of the modern-day nurse in service delivery(Needleman
&Hassmiller, 2014). In the report, it is clear that modern-day nurses do far more than the
traditional roles of providing patient care, and the work entails both intellectual and
organizational competence. According to the report, among the critical tasks carried out by
modern-day nurse are continual WEEK 9 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 3 monitoring and
assessment of their patient’s health and, as necessary, initiating interventions to abet
complications or minimize risk. Discussion: Introduction Nurses are important at all levels
2. of healthcare facilitiesNurses also coordinate care delivered by other health providers and
educate patients and home care-givers for discharge, which can lower risks of readmission
and post-hospital complications. In the course of offering their services, nurses develop
abstract knowledge of turning around weak and/or broken hospital systems. Thisinnate
trait of revivingbroken or dysfunctional hospital systems is legendary in health care.
Furthermore, as health facilities focus more on patient-centeredness, increasing reliability
and safety and efficiency, nurses’ knowledge and commitment to their patients and
institutions needs to be effectively embraced. To achieve this, nurses’ perspectives are
beingrespected and represented at the highest levels of hospital administration and
integrated into the general hospital decision making processes(Needleman &Hassmiller,
2014). To conclude, hospitals must integrate nurses and nursing leadership in their service
provision in order to increase quality and patient-centeredness and to improve the
efficiency of care delivery. To reap from their contribution, hospitals need to embrace their
potential input, shifting their vision of nursing from being a cost center to being a critical
service line. Q2: Nursing sensitive measurements or NSIs (Nursing Sensitive Indicators) are
tools that measure or quantify healthcare processes, outcomes, patient perceptions, and
organizational structure andsystems that are linked to the ability to provide quality health
services and/or that relate to one or more quality goals for health care(Mainz, WEEK 9
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 4 2013). These goals include: effective, safe, efficient, patient-
centered, equitable, and timely care.An ideal indicator should be based on agreed
definitions, and described exhaustively and exclusively. It should also be highly or optimally
specific and sensitive by detecting few false positives and false negatives. It should also be
valid and reliable. Finally, it should discriminate well and relate to clearly identifiable
events for the user e.g. if meant for clinical providers. Indicators may be categorized as
structural indicators, rate-based, outcome indicators, and process-based. ‘Structure’ refers
to health system characteristics that affect the system’s ability to meet the health care needs
of individual patients or a community e.g. the type and amount of resources used by a
health facility to deliver programs and services(Heslop& Lu, 2019). It may relate to the
presence or number of staff, clients, beds, etc. Rate-based indicators occur within some
frequency and may be expressed as proportions, rates, ratios, or mean values. They may
also be grouped as process indicators which assess what the health provider did for the
patient and how well it was done. Another category is outcome indicators that entails states
of health or events that follow care, and which may be affected by health care. Finally, they
may be categorized as generic/disease-specific indicators to measure aspects of care that
are relevant to most patients, while disease-specific indicators are diagnosis-specific and
measure particular aspects of care related to specific diseases. NSIs serve many
purposes(Mainz, 2013). Discussion: Introduction Nurses are important at all levels of
healthcare facilitiesThey make it possible to document the quality of care; make judgments
and set priorities such as choosing a health facility, or organizing medical care;
accountability, regulation, and accreditation; quality improvement(Heslop& Lu, WEEK 9
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 5 2019). Generally, the use of indicators enables professionals to
monitor and evaluate what happens to patients as a consequence of how well professionals
and organizational systems function to provide for the needs of patients.Monitoring health

Lazarte Nursing Role and Scope Professor Lourdes Castaneda Florida National University
Oct 29, 2019 1. Discuss the role of the nurse in quality improvement Nursing is one of the
professionals closest to the patients and is a social representative of the interest of the
hospital environment on the welfare and care of society, therefore, it is considered that
nurses must maintain and ensure the exercise of moral principles, even in conflict. This can
be a challenge (Lemus, 2018). However, the commitment of nurses as integral human
beings is to overcome the adversities of the hospital environment and even personal, to
offer every day the best quality of services to patients. Also, it is up to nurses, as health
professionals, to appropriate the individual and collective responsibility of offering users
the best quality in nursing. These duties may not be the easiest to fulfill, and even more,
when nurses are involved in moral dilemmas, such as recognizing that the health model
tends to benefit the quality of the services offered to users with better economic, political,
economic or social positions (Masters, 2017). For this reason, there is no doubt that the
questioning about nursing practice and the implications of this is a constant influence in the
quality of hospital services for the patients. Therefore, as professional and moral subjects,
nurses are able to generate and take advantage of appropriate health practices with the
purpose of offering the maximum quality indiscriminately 1. for each of the patients
(Masters, 2017). Describe nursing-sensitive measurements and why they are important in
Nursing care delivery. “NQF-15” are 15 performance measures for nursing, which focus on
the system, the patient and the nursing. That is, it is a National Voluntary Standards
consensus that guarantees nursing care for the care of different needs; measures of action,

failure in the execution of the nursing maneuvers; 2-Prevalence of pressure injuries; 3-
Prevalence of falls; 4-Falls with injury (National Quality Forum, 2014). 5-Prevalence of
fastenings; 6-Infection of the urinary tract as a result of probing in patients admitted to
intensive care units (ICU); 7-Sepsis associated with central venous catheter in patients
admitted to ICUs and high-risk patients admitted to Maternal and Child Units 8. Pneumonia
